Computers Near Me
by Guest George Hester- 0 replies

Is there a way to get the Computers Near Me to appear in Windows Explorer the way it does in Windows 2000 in Windows XP. According to this site: http://www.vsubhash.com/writeups/winxptips.asp in the Logon section they suggest using the same method as shown here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257902/en-us But as you can see this is specific to Windows 2000 and it doesn't work in Windows XP. Any other ideas? Thanks. -- George Hester ________________________________

Bad advice - now have Service Pack 1
by Guest JohnBoy25- 11 replies

I was advised by a friend that if I uninstall XP Service Pack 2 then reinstall it, that could solve the problems I am having with validation. I told him that I cannot acces Microsoft Update, Windows Update (still, despite all the advice I have been given)and my PC did not come with a disk but he said that didn't matter. Now I am stuck with Internet explorer 6, service pack 1 and am unable to download SP2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if another user is logged on and I attempt to do a fast user switch then when I click on the the other user icon on the welcome screen, it seems like windows is trying for a moment to load but then the welcome screen flashes a little and it remains on the welcome screen! If howerver I log off from the first account, then I can log on to the second one from the welcome screen! ALSO something has happened with the registry because I am an administrator yet windows does not allow me to change some stuff that I want, I have to right click and select an empty permission box so I can edit it... any ideas? Security Center icon in notification area
by Guest George Hester- 2 replies

I have Windows XP Professional SP2 not in a domain. It used to be but isn't now. The XP firewall is disabled; there is no anti-virus on the machine; and Automatic Updates is set to notify only. The Security Center icon continues to appear in the notification area and I cannot seem to stop that from happening. Somethimes when I double-click that icon the appearing Window is showning that the Firewall is on, but when I go to the Security Center to turn it off it is still off. When I close out of that Window and again double-click the Security Center icon in the system tray it will show it is off but the icon never goes away in the system tray. Is there someth…

COMMAND LINE NET COMMAND?
by Guest Jethro- 8 replies

I am experimenting with the command-line command 'net'. When I enter 'net view' I get several entries including one that says 'amd-part-1' as a share name and 'disk' as type. I seem to remember that I once set 'amd-part-1' up as the share name for c drive's partition1. I no longer use it. Anyway, I want to get rid of it. How do I do that either as a command or within XP itself? Thanks Jethro

Typing characters stalls and then bursts on monitor
by Guest Bill W- 3 replies

I hope this is the place for this problem. A friend of mine has a relatively new dual-core laptop. It functions without a problem except for one issue. When he is typing characters on the keyboard, the characters display on the monitor as he types until about 50-100 characters are typed and then the display will pause for about 3-5 seconds and then burst the characters he was typing during the pause. It will continue displaying normally and then pause and burst again. This happens with almost anything application he is using including Word and while creating an email in Outlook Express. It even happened when I was trying to type a short phrase in G…

According to the manual, you look for a key on that thing called your keyboard that has "Caps Lock" printed on it. Now stay with me, it gets a little harder from here... Next you have to choose one of your fingers. Any finger will work as long as you have some resemblance of control over it. Take that finger and push down on the key with "Caps Lock…

Windows XP keeps freezing up
by Guest Rich- 0 replies

I am running XP Pro, about a week ago (no new programs added) my computer would start freezing up sometimes but not always which makes it even more confusing. Usually but not always it's as I launch a program, try to exit a program or when I try to exit windows itself.. I try Ctrl + alt+del and something in the background changes (like behind the frozen program I cannot get out of, I can see my desktop appear behind the program)....windows task manager MAY appear, if does at that time it too may lock up. Whenever this 'freeze' occurs I cannot leave windows, I have to shut off the power. Other times windows task manager doesn't appear at all.....and yet …
