Folders aren't opening
by Guest fuggit- 2 replies

In XP..... When I click on a folder on desktop, or either in "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" on a folder on the right side of the screen, it'll prompt me for a "Search" when it use to just open the folder like I would want. Right clicking on the folder has "Search..." listed first and it use to be "open" I tried to create a .txt file listing everything in a folder directory, I created a .bat file and something didn't work. I went into to delete the setting for the .bat file in registry and I believe I may have altered something. Could someone please help me and tell me how to set things back to the way they were.

by Guest Tony- 12 replies

3 weeks ago I installed a new hard drive. I also re-installed Win Xp home edition from the xp disc that came with my Emachines pc. Playing Cd's and burning cdr's works fine. But my computer won''t read or write dvd's. When I look in (My Computer) it says I only have a Cd drive. It use to say cd/dvdrw drive. The system won't recognize anything but cd's. The drive in my computer is a Samsung Tsstcorp cd/dvdw ts h552b. Any tips to resolving this issue are greatly appreciated.

start-run command screen disappears
by Guest Craig in Connecticut- 4 replies

I've used XP for several years, but have never had this type of problem on my pc. I go to Start, then Run, and enter either msconfig or ipconfig, only to have the black pop up screen disappear almost instantly, without allowing me to view any data. If I use the long route, and go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt, then and only then will the black screen stay open and allow me to view the data. What is wrong with my system all of a sudden, and what can I do to fix it?

Damaged XP's recovery from Hibernation?
by Guest Richard- 0 replies

Hi All, I'm an avid fan of hibernation. I powering up a computer from a hibernation state is so much faster than allowing a re-boot. Today, however, I managed to screw up my recover. I keep an external hard-drive off-line (merely by keeping it switched off) except when I want to back-up or recover something from it. I switched it on today to either before or while I was recovering from hibernation. The adverse symptom I got was that AVG Free Edition's Control Center reports on component "Anti-Virus" that "Component is registered correctly; however determining status failed with error code 0x81000002." More significantly, running selected test repor…

Web Site found. Waiting for reply.

Everything ran fine this morning including OE. Decided to download the new Adobe Flash Player on a Link in MSN.com. There was a warning but I accepted it, it was on a Microsoft site. Not installed I think. Did not see it in "Find". Immediately went to OE. Could not get on. Tried several times to no avail. Back to my Home page, it worked. Then to my Favorites, a newspaper, call it "Newsworld". Impossible to get on nor on a link of "Newsworld" which is also in my Favorites. Went to "System Restore" and got back to a previous restore point. OE worked. No problems. But impossible to get to "Newsworld". On the status bar I see: Web site found. Waiting fo…

Everytime I log onto my financial institution's website, I must verify my identy. The FAQ's say that this is because I am deleting the secure cookie from my browser. This even occurs if i log out and log back in moments later. I have added the bank to my trusted sites, but the problem is still there. How can I keep these cookies from being deleted? -- 4i''''''''s

XP missing MBR?
by Guest Tom Kane- 2 replies
I have recently built my own PC and installed Windows XP Pro. I'm using it now to write this. Everything is fine, except the computer refuses to boot from the hard disk ... I have to have the installation CD in the CD drive to boot. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly slow boot. I've come to believe that I missed a step in the install and did not indicate that the hard drive (C:) should have the MBR (master boot record) installed. (Note that the BIOS is set to use the hard disk prior to the CD.) But I would have thought that the install would have been bullet proof and would have forced me to put a MBR somewhere, so that doesn't make any sense. A…

TOP - - Data Rate tab
by Guest aaa- 0 replies
Hi, A tech support (idiot) clown from Startech.com insists that Window XP SP2 Device Manager / Ports (COM & LPT) / PCI Serial Port Properties should have a tab for "Data Rate" and an option to "Detect Clock Frequency" but I cannot find either. I have all currently available MS updates, hotfixes, patches, etc. When I first loaded Windows XP SP2, I chose to use Classic windows over XP windows and disabled Themes to ensure it. Would this choice eliminate the Data Rate tab and its various options? If so, when I roll back to XP windows, this tab does not appear. Any thoughts? Thank you. Anna Arkin
