Windows Installer & Windows XP SP3
by Guest RegB- 0 replies

I upgraded my sister's PC with a new motherboard, processor and hard drive (SATA). I was able to use Western Digital’s tools to transfer files from the old IDE to the new SATA. I ran into a slight snag and had to call & reactivate Windows (twice) after the new motherboard & drivers were installed. After Windows was happy, I applied all patches which included SP3. PROBLEM: Office and Adobe icons have converted to the default icon. When I try to use one of these applications, Windows Installer (version 3.1) pops up and tries to install. Any attempt to install or uninstall results in an error message saying "This patch package could not be open…

Hello, I'm trying to have something similar to X-Windows CDE - where I can minimize a window with ALT-Right_Click, etc. Anyone know where keyboard shortcuts are defined and how they can be modified? I'd like to be able to launch the instant viewer with ALT-F1 and also move a window with ALT-Left. Also, ALT-Double_Click to maximize would be nice. Thanks, Ananth

I have win xp sp2. I have a mapped network drive mapped to: \\server\share\folder and it is mapped as the L drive. After some time it shows the drive as Disconnected. When this happens, the program that needs to use it does not work because it thinks it is not there. Any ideas on ways to make it never go to disconected status? thanks

by Guest Harold A. Climer- 1 reply

Recently I had to re-install my OS;Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I also installed SP3 after using the HP patch program for AMD processors before I installed anything else. After transferring some files back from my USB backup external hard drive, I noticed that the system ID was not the same as it was in the previous installation. (I had kept the old system ID number in a Word file.) I have a piece of software that uses the system ID,a serial number and a activation number to make sure it can only be installed on one computer. Is there a way I can change back to the old sysyem ID number, so I can get the software up an running again? BTW this is not th…

Hi Over the last couple of days I have had an extra user account appear everytime I start the computer up each day called IUser_Admin. No matter what I try it still keeps reappearing!! I keep deleting the account but it still keeps coming back! I have run my antivirus/spyware software which removed some infections but still it persists. Have tried Ad-Aware which cleaned it too, have also tried running antivirus etc in safe mode and have done the Windows One Care online scanner. Any other suggestions?

Howdy, I'm running XP SP3 on a Dell Latitude D610. If I open the "Help & Support Center" and click "User's Guide" nothing happens. I do have the HTML User's Guide on the system, but obviously, not in the proper location. Where should I put it to allow it to be seen by the "Help & Support Center" link? Many thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Although My Computer occurs in Explorer when I look at Desktop, the icon is missing. If I drag My Computer from Desktop, all I get is a shortcut, not the icon itself (with the ability to go directly to Manage, etc.) How do I restore the original icon for My Computer onto the desktop? Thanks Ken K

The issue is in detail as explained it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319440. In the CAUSE paragraph: "This behavior may occur if the client is unable to use opportunistic locking when the client is downloading the policy. " If opportunistic locking is disabled on the client end would this be the same as "The client is unable to use opportunistic locking?

knlwrap.exe

My AVG Antivirus initially found this to be "Trojan Horse Dropper.Agent.JOC." and placed it in the valut. It was located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine\6\Intel 32\knlwrap.exe. It was in the vault for about 3 weeks, then finally I found out that it was a "false positive" and I restored the file to its original location from the AVG Vault. Do you guys/girls know what this file (knlwrap.exe) is for? Also, would having it in the vault for 3 weeks cause my computer or some software not to function properly? THANKS After I did the restore, the file is now in its original location. But the file is still in the Vaul…
