registry editing
by Guest Faio Eric- 1 reply

regedit is a command to edit the registry. My question is, if you have 2 HDD with both windows xp installed and wish to edit the registry of another HDD, can this be done. The reason for asking is, I have a computer which works fine and another computer which was infected by a worm virus. I took the HDDrive from the infected computer, Make it a slave of the good computer and then run the virus scanner so that it will be cleaned. I then need to edit that infected HDDrive registry. Can this be done? Thanks in advance

Program auto-startup returning from Standby?
by Guest +Bob+- 0 replies

When my computer is sent to StandBy, I have it set up to prompt for a username and password. Following the login, I need a program to execute (much like you'd have a program execute at normal login via a reg key or start menu -> start entry. I'm familiar with the keys that execute at "normal" login, but are there any keys or other features that execute at Windows (re)login from Standby?

Keyboard Regional Settings Not Saved
by Guest Dobbie- 4 replies

Hi all We have just set up some new XP Pro SP2 machines on our network. As an administrator, we set the input locale/regional settings/keyboard etc as UK English. However, when a non-administrator logs in, the keyboard reverts to US English. This is intensely annoying, especially as the end-users are severely restricted by group policy in what they can open/use/change, so they cannot edit the regional settings while logged in themselves. We have deleted all non-administrator user profiles from the machines, set and reset the regional settings as an administrator, copied that profile and recreated the default user profile by renaming the copied administ…

I am experiencing a problem with offline folders. I have a laptop with Office 2003 SP2 and XP SP2, I have performed a windows and office update and installed all available patches. My offline folders will synchronize fine, however if I try to save a new word document whilst offline to my offline folder office freezes and I cannot use my laptop (this problem also occured whilst using excel). If I amend an existing document and perform a save it works fine.

Firewalls

Thanks to those wha answered Steve Wilsons question (Incidentally. can anyone tell me why so many names in this ng appear as a jumble of symbols, although my tooltip sorts them into English?) The real question is - I've got 3 firewalls, one in an ADSL router, the Windows Firewall, and I'm using Comodo. The reason I like Comodo is it tells me if any prog is phoning home, and requires a permission. Can I turn off both the other two, or is another one preferable, or do I need more than one? I'd prefer to have just one running, as I used to before routers and Windows Firewalls, I never had a sniff of trouble with one of the several excellent freew…

I tried to find a group for win 2003 and post the message but I cannot find anything. Strange. I remember there is win2003 group before and don't know what happened to it now. Anyway, I hope anyone here can help me then. Because I don't know where to post the message. How do I start the IIS service in win 2003? I tried to do it in the service and it is running but when I tried to put a htm under the c:\inet\wwwroot\test.htm and type http://server/test.htm . It gives "service unavailable". Can anyone please help? Sorry if I post in the wrong group.

Screen Resolution and Least User Rights
by Guest Thomas M- 2 replies

We are converting all of our users to standard user accounts (they will not have administrative rights on the local box). I have heard a report, but have not yet had the chance to confirm, that users cannot change their screen resolution unless they have administrative rights. Is this true, and if so, is there a way to institute the least user rights principal while also allowing the user the ability to change the screen resolution? --Tom

Remote Desktop Users and Least User Rights
by Guest Thomas M- 0 replies

We have undertaken a project to switch all of our users to standard user accounts (no administrative rights on the local machine). We have many users that are setup so that they can access their computers from home. We've noticed that when the user is removed from the Administrators group, the list of authorized remote users (My Computer > Properties > Remote tab > Select Remote Users) gets wiped out. An administrator then has to log on to the machine and add the user back to the list. I can see why this would happen, but it does present something of a problem for us. I would prefer not to have to fix this problem on hundreds of machines. …
