NTFS Corruption?
by Guest Stephan Rose- 10 replies

I seem to be seeing some weird things happening to my XP file system. One directory is inaccessible in every way shape and form with errors telling me that it can't read from the disk. Then I have 2 additional directories that are both pointing to the same identical content. Their names are even identical save that one is missing the last character. Of course, chkdsk, being dumber than a rock, finds absolutely no problems and thinks everything is just peachy. But it's quite apparent that this is not the case. Anyone have any suggestions beyond the usual Microsoft Fix: reformat, reinstall and screw up master boot record / dual boot? Thanks, -- Ste…

folders will not stay customized
by Guest Panji- 0 replies

When we customize folders, the folders will often swap the pictures placed on them with random pictures in the "pictures" folder. Some will re-check the "Also apply this template to all sub-folders." check box after we uncheck it and close the "Properties" window. I do not know if this is happening to all folders, but it is not happening to all of the folders at the same time. Also, in "My Folders", the folders have random pictures on them even though some of them do not have "Customize" tabs or contain pictures. At least once, 5 of the folders inside of another folder took on the exaxt same random picture. I have checked the folders from the top …

Date Rate tab
by Guest aaa- 0 replies

Hi, A tech support (idiot) clown from Startech.com insists that Window XP SP2 Device Manager / Ports (COM & LPT) / PCI Serial Port Properties should have a tab for "Data Rate" and an option to "Detect Clock Frequency" but I cannot find either. I have all currently available MS updates, hotfixes, patches, etc. When I first loaded Windows XP SP2, I chose to use Classic windows over XP windows and disabled Themes to ensure it. Would this choice eliminate the Data Rate tab and its various options? If so, when I roll back to XP windows, this tab does not appear. Any thoughts? Thank you. Anna Arkin

~$ (1K) version & .tmp file appear upon opening documents
by Guest Enigma- 1 reply

??? Upon opening any document, a ~$ (1K) version of the document appears in the folder menu. When a document is saved, the document and a ~WRL3436.tmp file appear in the folder menu. When the original document is closed the ~$ and temporary file also disappear. This just started happening a few days ago. I have WinXP Student P4 with Word 2007. Is my PC infected or is this a program error? How can this be corrected or should it be left alone? Could this be caused by a recent automatic update installed? Has anyone else had this problem? Please help. -- Simone de Beauvoir (Enigma)

Windows Explorder refrsh rate
by Guest Steve Wright- 1 reply

Hi, Whenever I go into Windows Explorer the screen is refreshed every second. Imagine that someone is pressing the refresh button continuously. This means I can't scroll thru files, and can't select files because the screen is contunually refreshing. When this happens, you see the orginal Icons and then a second later they are replaced with the dedicate specialist ones. Then the screen refreshes to be replaced with the original ones. This is contunual every second. So what is going on here? PS I did put in a new graphics card a couple of weeks ago. Regards, Steve.

windows files messages
by Guest chief2000- 3 replies
Once in a while I keep getting messages saying that "files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions." It then asks me to insert my Windows XP disc. I have XP home edition with SP1 and 2 installed along with all current updates. I have not experienced any major problems except that my joystick does not operate properly and is pretty new. Windows should recognize it without any software installation in the USB 2.0 port. It will not calibrate either. Don't know if this problem is even remotely connected with the "files" msg. Even if it isn't, I'd like to nip it in the bud before anything major occurs.

All of a sudden, I can not run any of my office 2003 applications. When I try to run Word, Publisher, Excel or Powerpoint, I get the following error: "MS [office application Name] cannot install the necessary files due to windows installer error 1634... Component not used on this computer" Since last successfully using Office on this computer, I have not installed any programs, updated any programs or exposed the computer to any of the Black Tuesday stuff. Any Ideas? Thanks in advance........ Stan

Folder and File Names Have Disappeared
by Guest Jim- 2 replies

I created a new folder on my desktop and moved some files into the folder. All went smoothly but now when I access the folder the names under the yellow folders and under the (for example) MS Word icons have disappeared. When I change view from "Thumbnails" to "Tiles" the folder names show up, but I prefer to use the "Thumbnails" view. This is only happening to one folder. All the other folders on my computer are fine. I ran my anti-virus, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, CWShredder, Spyware Blaster and refreshed my Zone Alarm. Everything comes back as clean. Can anyone help? Thanks. Jim
