Card Reader not working?
by Guest LMO- 2 replies
Aloha all. I posted this before, but missed the answers...sorry. I have a Card Reader in my computer. It reads 9 different types of memory cards. I use SD, 1GB cards. When I put them in they are read fine, but whenever I try to write to the card I am told the card is write protected. It is not. I have the tab in the correct position...have tried in both ways. Nothing I can do to get the system to see the card as unprotected. What can I do? Thanks!

WinXP Updates failing
by Guest ~~Alan~~- 3 replies

I had a computer that was on its last leg. I had another computer to use but instead of reinstalling an OS and all of my applications to start clean, I decided to remove the disk from the bad computer and put it into the new computer. I expected WinXP to not boot since the disk was configured for another machine. I read somewhere that I can do a repair install and then reapply the updates. The repair install worked. The system boots and my applications are still intact. The first update downloaded and installed. It was the WGA thing. I rebooted and the next set up updates downloaded, about 78 of them, and they all failed. I have tried reboot…

The OS offers to send a message to Micro$oft before I can get online. Not having Service Executable working doesn't seem to harm anything. What is it, and why does it fail to start about once every two months. Thanks.

Moving WinXP to a larger drive and WPA?
by Guest Pat- 11 replies

Will windows product activation prevent Windows XP Professional from being moved to a larger drive? I moved from an 80G drive (with one partition) to a 250G drive (with two partitions). On the 250G, partitions were created and formatted with Partition Magic 8, then files cloned over using Norton Ghost 2003. Drive is FAT32, so I can still boot from a floppy. Now, with the new drive, Windows will boot, but it will get to the Windows welcome screen and then stop. Even in Safe Mode, it won't let me finish the boot process, not even to get to the command prompt. A search of the web show that this is a somewhat common problem when moving XP to a significantly la…

Java Runtime 1.6.0
by Guest Curt Christianson- 6 replies

Good afternoon all, I'd like an answer to what many may consider an easy or trivial kind of question Just *what* does having the Java Runtime Environment **do** for me as a computer user? Will it help me see or hear web content better/differently? I certainly wasn't going to SunMC to check for updates, as they act like JRE is either the second coming of the Almighty, or your computer will hardly turn on without it. What prompts me to ask is yet *more* vulnerabilities have been discovered in the last week or two. Some MVP's are going as far as un-installing it. Pros/Cons All advice welcome, and as always, Many TIA, Curt Windows Support…

Weird DVD problem
by Guest MikeB- 2 replies
I think this might be more appropriate to a different forum, if so a pointer would be appreciated. I have a laptop (ca. 2003, Pentium 4, Win/XP) with a DVD/recordable CD drive combo. The Drive plays DVD movies just fine. Just recently I received a DVD with file content. When I put this DVD into my drive, it is as if there is nothing in the drive. I can place the DVD into the DVD drive of an older computer I have and I can get the DVD to run and display its contents. I can't even begin to figure out how to troubleshoot this problem. Any hints? Thanks

RE: XP or Vista on New PC?
by Guest Dave B- 0 replies

RE: XP or Vista on New PC? That is a loaded question ... my theory was that it's better to get it factory installed than to upgrade, so with that in mind I got a brand new tricked out HP laptop and brand new tricked out HP desktop, custom built, with Vista Ultimate. There are serious known issues if you want to try and connect via a network with a computer not running Vista (even XP). I had to buy NetworkMagic.com to be able to connect everything properly. Also be aware that there are several software conflicts with Vista, so you may need to purchase an upgrade for software to work on your Vista computer .... for sure Quickbooks, Adobe Creative Sui…
