For few days now, when I finish my tasks and close the lid, the system goes in hibernation as usual but will wake up after about 10 mines. or so. Power schemes= VAIL Optimized Setting for VAIO Optimized power scheme = 'Never' in all the options Are these settings correct? upgrade XP Home to XP Prof 1 2
by Guest Peter- 34 replies

I have a very slow laptop. I am sure that it is very clean. However, I suspect that over the years the Registry may have suffered a 'bump' or two. If the reason for the slowness was there, would an upgrade from XP Home to XP Professional make sure that any problems withe registry and other parts of the system would be totally solved? Thank you JB

network browsing is slow after 30 minutes
by Guest jrand- 0 replies
One of the SysAdmins created a domain account (Win2k Server) user with the same name as the workstation name. Once someone logs into the domain using this account browsing network shares is no problem, however, after 30 minutes there's about a 5 minutes lag when trying to open up network shares? Can someone tell me why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

Disable compression on a compressed ntfs drive
by Guest bnmohan via WindowsKB.com- 4 replies

Hi! 30 Jul I have a Windows XP hard disk with NTFS compression enabled. I now understand that the compression is at the cost of performance, which I cannot afford. Can I disable compression on a drive that had NTFS compression enabled? Or will I end up with junk? Thanks, Mohan -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/windowsxp/200807/1

System restore
by Guest Lil' Dave- 1 reply

A removable hard drive enclosure went kaput. The drive inside, 200GB WD, I kept. Installed into a removable enclosure that fits into the bay of the PC. This connected to a Promise UltraTX controller card. Wiped the 2 FAT32 partitions, and made 2 NTFS partitions in XP using disk manager. I use system commander for a boot manager. I forgot that it would automatically hide new primary partitions found from any OS I boot from. Upon the first reboot, found that windows explorer could not find the new NTFS partitions. So, in disk management, I added them. I rebooted again. Same results, even though they were added previously. At that point, I remembe…

Mouse freezes
by Guest Robichris- 4 replies

My laptop has XP pro with SP3. In use, after a short time (5 mins to 30 mins), either sitting idle with no programs running or engaged in activity (eg. word processing), the mouse freezes. Everything else is working OK and I can navigate to other programs and save documents etc with the keyboard, but the only solution I can find is to shut down and restart. I have tried other mice all with the same result. I have replaced the i8067prt and mouclas system files copied from my desktop machine without effect.

by Guest Saurabh- 6 replies

Greetings!!! I had a problem with my dvd writer. I was not able to access. Then while googling, i found a solution that deleting few registry entries upperfilters and lowerfilters will solve the problem. but, when i delete entries and restart, my keyoard and mouse stopped working. Now finding solution for that, i found one reg file, if i will restore that, things should work proper. But, as i have login password, and my keyboard doesnt work, I am unable to login. so my question is there anyway whereby i can bypass that login screen and install that reg file. Or anyother way whereby i can restore my reg files. I dont want to re-install windows, i hav…

(the prompt you get from -xp safe mode with command prompt option) xp CD recovery console does that but then one cannot acess (not even open cdrom door) a different CD and it would be convenient to run a 32 bit command line AV scanner off that CD to check an infected hdd

My Documents
by Guest Tatar- 0 replies

My Documents has been moved from C: to D: drive. When I go to Start > My Documents I get "John's Documents", "Peter's Documents" and other files. Since I backed up drive C: from an external HDD now when I go to Start > My Computer I get all the drives plus "John's Documents" and "Peter's Documents", as I expect it to be. However, if I click on Peter's Documents I get the whole lot i.e. I get "John's Documents", "Peter's Documents" and other files. Is it possible that when I backed up my C: drive I duplicated the documents once more? I do not think it is a shortcut link.

WindowsXP Insomnia
by Guest PT- 2 replies

I've posted this problem before - It's still unresolved. here's an update. I put my WindowsXP Home desktop into Standby. It dutifully obeys. Then anywhere from a few moments to ten or fifteen minutes it awakens. I have an optical mouse, and somewhere, I no longer remember where (but I'd love a clue), I instructed Windows not to awaken the computer with mouse motion. Normally I have to press a key such as the Shift key. So what is waking it up? I assume there's some sort of background process going on. Suggestions welcome -- PT
