auto image transfer facility
by Guest Nigel A- 1 reply

When connecting (for example) a digital camera Windows has a program which automatically kicks-in to facilitate the images being transferred to the computer. For some reason this has stopped working on my PC. Presumably by some means the program has become corrupted and need re-installing, or something like that. In the meantime it is neccessary to use Explorer and whilst this will work it is more time consuming. Please advise how to resolve this issue and many thanks in advance for any help.

Why the Icons of the Desktop change their position?
by Guest Alberto de Oliveira Alves Filho- 2 replies

Hello, I have reinstalled my Windows XP and I have noticed that when I restart it (after putting it to "sleep" - I don´t know the proper world in english) some of the Desktop Icons change their positions (and sometimes leaving empty spaces where they where before), and I have to put them where I left them before. How can I solve this problem? I´m waiting for your feedback. Thanks in advance.

Problem with WS2_32.dll
by Guest Greg Nash- 9 replies

After scheduling a backup task to run every night using my backup program "Acronis", the next morning I always get a windows error message: "This application has failed to start because WS2_32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I've reinstalled the application, but this doesn't help. Acronis technical support says "Since WS2_32.dll is a system file we may recommend you to restore your system to avoid this error message", which doesn't help either. I posted a question on the Wilders Security Forum, which is the official Acronis (and others) support forum. The file WS2_32.dll is in my system32 folder in the windows f…

Blue Screen of Death - Desperate for HELP!!!
by Guest pbl- 5 replies

Tonight I got the BSOD after my antivirus software (AVG Free) detected a virus in a file downloaded. Now I can't reboot my notebook without getting the BSOD. This happens when attempting to reboot even to safe mode or the dos prompt. Also tried last working configuration option. I'm wondering what my options are here? Will booting to the WinXP CD allow me to run AVG on the hard drive files or somehow provide any other course of action to recover the important system files? Is it time to purchase a 2.5 inch HDD enclosure and transfer my important files to another PC before doing a fresh install? Many thanks.

I recently installed vista on drive (2) partition two and all worked fine (dual boot). I now want to reinstall xp on the same drive and same partition because I have to format it to eliminate some nasty viruses. I changed BIOS to boot from CD but somehow when I try to reinstall only drive (1) appears as an option. Any solutions pls?

Can someone help me with this problem? Lately, when I log in the morning I am finding my account locked out receiving the following message: "Naming information cannot be located because: The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted. Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online." This computer is joined to a Windows 2003 domain. I have also noticed this problem occurring during an already logged on session trying to access a website that requires credentials to access its contents.

Windows Desktop Search not finding Outlook Messages
by Guest MATT- 4 replies

"I have Windows XP SP2 and Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2003 I downloaded and installed Windows Desktop Search 3.01. When I search for a message in Outlook, I only get "No Matches Found For...", even if a search for a message that I'm looking right at. I have tried uninstalling/re-installing the WDS. In Outlook, under Tools - Options - Search Options under Index Messages in these Data Files, I have "Mailbox - My Mailbox" checked. Desktop Search works when searching regular files, but no matter what i do, what i search for, i get no results when searching for messages in Outlook.

Where does the backup registry come from ?
by Guest Dave Moore- 4 replies

Every time at boot up, there is a message stating that some part of the registry has been recovered from a backup hive or log. I found that when I replace the "Software" hive with a copy from either the CD or Repair folder, the error message doesn't happen.. Unfortunately this seems to cause another problem in the form of some buggered-up user accounts. I'd like to try an old trick I've used with win98. However, the trick requires knowing where the backup registry files are pulled from. With Win98, often the system would recover by pulling a backup of the registry and whenever that would happen a lot of program settings would revert back to when…
