How can I change the letter designation of my boot drive?
by Guest Mike M.- 2 replies

As part of trying to make an image backup of my hard drive using Ghost, it renamed my main hard drive to "D:", and named the small unused partition at the end of the disk to "C:". Now I can't boot up the computer because it's looking for the operating system on the "C:" drive. So I either need to change the name of D back to C, or tell the PC that the operating system is now on D. I don't have access to any windows programs like Disk Management, or even Regedit. I do have access to Dell Recovery Console commands, but they are limited and the only good ones are FixBoot (writes a new bootsector) and FixMBR. But there's nothing wrong with my bootsector…

My wife and I each have a user account with each account having owner privileges. Whenever my wife tries to use certain games, the display changes from hi resolution (1024 by 768) to low resolution (800 by 600.) This never happens on my settings, even the same games. How can I prevent this unwanted change? Richard

Hard Drive invisable to LAN, why?
by Guest Robert Bodling- 4 replies

I just added a much-needed hard drive to my computer. It is seen by the computer, but not on the LAN on any other computer and not when looking on the LAN of the computer it is on!!! In the past, it was a simple thing of removing the Firewall or non-sharing, or something like that. Not this time. I have checked all of those things. It simply isn't there. But one I added before was OK when I installed it. I took it out and put this one in the exact same place as the other, smaller one, and it works fine, but won't show up on the LAN anywhere, which is the main thing I got it for: to be used as storage on our server. I couldn't find any help when Googling it. A c…

Problem accessing CD/DVD and external devices
by Guest rossgh- 0 replies

My setup with Windows XP, two external hard drives connected via USB, IPOD USB and CD/DVD was all working fine. Same problem with a USB memory stick. Now I can't access any of the above - they all show under windows explorer with a drive letter, but when I try and access them I get G:\is not accessible, Access is Denied. If I start in safe mode all works fine. If I map the external hard drives as a network drive I can access them. Any ideas what has gone wrong? The PC is used by the family, I can't see any recent suspect software, virus software is all current.

Windows Text Size
by Guest Victoria@DIG- 4 replies

Hello: My boss got a new laptop and the minimum screen resolution keeps text too small for her to read comfortably. We've gone through the diplay properties and changed the text size for all the menus and title bars, but can't get the window text display size to change. This is particularly problematic for viewing her Inbox in Outlook. Is there a way to change the Window Text Size? Maybe a system font change or something? Thanks.

client machine not registering with DNS
by Guest Saqib Ali- 3 replies

We have "some" machines that fail to register with the dynamic DNS. The machines are all part of the Active Directory, and I can see the machines in the Computer OU. However nslookup on the machine name fails. This only happens with a handful of machines. The rest of them register with the DNS fine. All the machine are identical. We use BIND for dynamic DNS. I have already tried uninstalling / reinstalling the network driver, repairing the TCP/IP stack, and re-installing the Printer and File Sharing client. Anyway to force the machine to register itself with the DNS? saqib http://www.linkedin.com/in/encryption

System: DELL Dimension 8300, P4 3.2 MHz, with PX Pro (SP2) 1 GB RAM and 250GB HD. I have been copying files to and from a 1GB USB stick for some time, when it suddenly locked. Now I am unable to delete the files on it, or reformat the drive (E:). XP boot in Safe Mode won't help, nor will anything executed from the command line. I have tried every variation of 'FORMAT' (including some undocumented parameters from the DOS-era - getting desperate here...), ran 'CHKDSK /F", 'SCANDISK' and some external tools, like Norton Utilities (32-bit). I have also tried to 'MOVE' the files elswhere, REName them, and remove attributes in safe mode - to no avail. I *AM* able…
