SP3
by Guest AliceZ- 2 replies

I downloaded and installed SP3 on my notebook and when it had finished, I got a small black screen (looked like DOS screen) stating some files (I believe) were installed (I think it said that).everything appears to have gone fine. After I did the download and install on my desktop, I noticved at the final moment, the small black screen came up (and a few white text lines appeared stating "access denied.") I don't know what that was all about. I am using the desktop now and it appears to be okay. Should I worry about that "access denied" white text I saw?

trouble with jpg files
by Guest Swissy- 8 replies
Hi Recently, when I receive .jpg attachments from people and I try to open them, I get an error message that says there is no association for the file type It shows the file type as WER. I've never seen this before and I never had this problem in the past. The file extension of the attachment is ..jpg. When I save the files to my folder, it also shows the description under the type as WER. What is this type of file and any idea how to get my computer settings to treat these files as jpg's the way it did before?

I attempt to install the Cumulative Security Update for IE7(KB950759), it says successfully installed in the automatic updates, but when I reboot the machine, it prompts this again, I download the KB950759 and tri…

by Guest Doonie- 3 replies

I have done about 9+ installations of XP pro over the years. I am prone to radical solutions to otherwise simple problems. In any case, the last few times I had to activate over the phone with some nice people in India. Is there a limit to how many times I can do this? I have my hologram key sticker. Partitions on Dell Computer 1 2
by Guest Earl Partridge- 31 replies
Trying to help a friend with her Dell Dimension 3000 machine. It would not boot. I installed that hard drive into another machine as a Slave and it was recognized. XP's Disk Management showed the drive to be partitioned (or at least split) into 3 sections. The first simply shows 39 Meg Healthy, the second shows (C:) 70 GB (System) Healthy. I don't recall exactly what the third section showed but it did (and does) show 4.17 GB. I did delete that third section. Now with that HD back in the original machine, it will boot after being prompted to press F1 - Primary Drive 1 not found. I tried several things with that 3rd section, but nothing eliminates that prom…

I'm trying to solve one simple problem. On my WXP partition all printers stopped working (even PDF writer). I have HP local printer working fine on WIN98se, while the same printer on WXP won’t print although system detects it. When I perform the Print test page WXP tells me: “System cannot find the path specified”. Any suggestions? -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

lost downloaded archive
by Guest Michel- 1 reply
I received a Word archive through my hotmail account. I opened it without saving it to my hard disk. During the six hours that I was working on the document I did save it several times but never as 'save as'. When I finished I save the document again and closed it. Now I can't find it anymore. I opened the archive again from my hotmail to see where it was saving it to which is 'temporary files' but there is no register of the document that I have worked on. I have done a search on the whole hard disk for the name of the file that was sent to me but that didn't find anything either. Does anybody know if and how I can find the document again so I don't have …

Shutdown hanging on PML
by Guest Clang- 5 replies
When I shut down something named PML seems to hang for 3-5 minutes. The only indication of what is hanging when I close down is that "PML" appears in the blue title bar of a transparent window that remains on the screen until the computer shuts down. The window appears as a large dialog box in the upper left corner, the title bar and border lines of the box appear but you can see the desktop behind the box. I am assuming it is a driver or something that is trying to close. If anyone knows what is causing this or how to fix it I would appreciate the help.

This file came from another computer.......
by Guest Smirnoff- 4 replies
When looking at "Properties" of some installation files, at the bottom (under Attributes) there is additional information: Security: This file came from another computer and may be blocked to protect this computer. There is also an "unblock" button. For the life of me, I don't remember seeing this until recently. The installation program seems to work OK without clicking the "Unblock" button. However, I am wondering which program/feature is generating this info. Logic says that it is Windows firewall (which I have recently reverted back to from Comodo) but no warning dialogue appears when trying to run the program. Also, have recently installed SP…

Help: no Explorer Navigation buttons or menus at top of My Documentsin Windows XP x64
by Guest wrreisen2- 3 replies
Hi, Please help when I open "My Documents" no Explorer Navigation buttons (back, forward, up a folder, search, folders, etc) or menus (file, edit, view etc) at top of My Documents in Windows XP x64. The same if I download something and then say open folder. I find it most inconvenient for navigation. Is there any setting to make them have these controls. If I start explorer.exe it has these controls. Up until recently I had these controls on all the windows I wanted them on. I don't know if I've changed a setting to make the disappear or if it's one of the many updates that I've downloaded that has caused this. Thanks for any advice.

Create a RamDrive?
by Guest jp2msft- 1 reply

How can I create a RamDrive? Microsoft does this whenever it is installing Windows, so hopefully everyone knows what I'm talking about. I don't need something as low level as what Microsoft uses, but I'd like to know how to create a virtual drive through Visual Studio (C++, C#, VB). Is it possible? Who cares why - can it be done?

Desktop / icons very slow to refresh ...
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

(I've been Googling but, today is not my Google day !) ....after working in Adobe Photoshop and sometimes other programs. Even after a fresh restart, then using Adobe to work on a photo or two, ...when I quit Adobe, it exits fast enough but, Desktop takes ages to refresh, i.e. 10 or 15 icons takes ages to turn from like a plain postage stamp to their proper little graphic. Any idea where I can rummage to tweak this, or is it just the norm. ? regards, Richard
