Does hard disk usage affect computer speed?
by Guest Danger_Duck- 2 replies
So this computer has 12 out of 19 GB used. Now, even after defragmentation, do programs run slower simply because more of the hard disk has been used up? For that matter, in general, how much is performance slowed down for every fraction of disk used up? (Obviously a rather vague question, I guess I mean if my total space is T, and an additional x space is used, on what order does speed slow down if any?) Thanks! (In case you're wondering, I'm thinking of burning rarely-used data to blank CDs, which I have a lot of).

how to reposition hardware...
by Guest RJK- 0 replies

As a little project, a little while ago, and with lots of TLC and attention to detail, I built myself an extra AMD based PC, with all sorts of goodies in it, and it Benchmarks out, in HOTcpu Tester Pro Lite at: X6000+ Total 11413 Metamark to MHz ratio 3.79 ....compared to my "old" Intel D935 which only gets: D935 Total 7438 Metamark to MHz ratio 2.33 Now ! I want my "old" main system box unplugged, and moved about eight feet to the left, and the AMD one moved about eight feet to the right and all plugged in, of course. And of course I want all my Windows settings transferred from old to new system box, and also one of the hard-disks in my "old" bo…

How to stop 'auto run' feature on a CD ?
by Guest room508- 7 replies
I'm not talking about the Windows dialog box that pops up when you put in a CD. That dialog box can be disabled by right clicking the drive icon in Windows Explorer. There is an 'auto play' tab where it can be disabled. OK. I'm not talking about that dialog box. But many CDs have an 'auto run' feature. When you put the CD in it displays it's own menu on the screen. Is there a setting somewhere that will stop the disk's auto run feature. I mean: can I make the PC do nothing ? Just like when I put in a floppy. When I put in a floppy disk the PC doesn't ask questions. It doesn't do anything with the floppy disk until I tell tell it to look at the flo…

When I copy & paste, sometimes the pasted info will include previously copied & pasted info stuck into my current paste at weird locations. I copy & past dozens of times a day and this just started happening a couple of days ago. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do to correct this issue? Is it a problem with copy & paste feature in Hotmail? Thanks a lot for your advice! -- Travelers Lane

I have 2 Samsung DVD units in my XP based PC. One is a reader, the other a writer. When I try and open a commercial DVD in either unit, media player shows the dvd contents down the right side but it appears when it tries to start audio, the system crashes and automatically reboots. This happens with both units. So far I have run Driver plus and upgraded all my drivers to current level. Loaded latest firmware on each of the DVD units, installed Windows Media Player 11 and the windows supplied codecs, upgraded XP to SP3. Both units play audio cds no problem - mediaplayer plays all my wmv files ok. I also have NERO on the machine and as soon as I start Sho…

Open File Security Warning - SP3
by Guest Paul Worsnop- 4 replies
Hi, I have a PC that has recently been updated to Win XP SP3. However, when it now attempts to open files that are located on our domain server the Open File Security Warning box appears everytime. We had turned this off by adding our Domain Server name to the "Trusted Sites" area of IE7 when running SP2, however the upgrade to SP3 seems to have brought it back and ignored the fact that our server is still listed as a trusted site! Can anyone shed any light on how to solve this problem and remove the annoying prompt? Thanks Paul

storCenter Pro 150d: Unable to access Shares anymore after migratingdomain to w2k8
by Guest paulreims@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hello, we have two Iomega Storcenter Pro 150d NAS in our network. Since we migrated the domain to windows 2008(Windows 2008 native mode), we are not able to acces the shares on the NAS anymore. We always get a "login failed" message. Web login still works. There seems to be a parameter in Windows 2008 default domain configuration(NTLM level or other), which prevents the NAS from authenticating users agains the domain. Any idea? Best regards PR

Autocomplete / user name / password problems
by Guest Erik- 6 replies

Hi all. Since a day or two my XP Pro SP3 / IE 7 (7.0.5730) installation is acting up. All of my user name / password combinations seem to have disappeared. Worse, whenever XP asks me to save the password I click "yes"; but the next time I have to retype the whole thing. Also, the same happens with Live Messenger. I've done some searching here and found the comments about deleting the protected storage key. Doesn't help. I've restarted the PC several times since it first happened. No joy. And just now I reinstalled IE 7. Same problem... If you know what's going on and how to fix it I'd appreciate your help! Thanks, Erik

SATA Trouble
by Guest Pimpedoutgeese- 7 replies

Hey guys. I decided to upgrade my WinXP setup to SP3. After doing so I can't access my SeaGate ST332062OAS 300 GB SATA HD . A couple things to note, before the install, the SATA drive was assigned with F: but now for some odd reason after install reassigned my original IDE drive to F: instead of C: (weird). Also in Disk Management, the IDE comes up as Healthy (System) and the SATA drive comes up as Healthy (Active) so apparently to some degree Windows knows it's there, but just won't let me access it. I'm not sure what to do, there's some pretty important Docs that I can't really afford to lose on the drive otherwise I would have formatted that ba…

MS Outlook Warning message
by Guest Krjarman- 2 replies
Every time I open MS Outlook now, a warning message appears: "A program is trying to access email addresses you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this?" I am given the option of answering Yes or No. If the answer is yes I can select the number of minutes to allow this access, up to 10 minutes. Unfortunately, if I answer NO nothing happens and the warning message remains. I have found the only way I can get rid to the warning message and continue in Outlook is to answere YES for 1 minute. Actually I have to answer yes twice before the warning message will go away. How can I prevent this message from even appearing or if this is somthing new f…

Multiple save dumps (with debug info)
by Guest Ross- 4 replies

Up to this point I have tried to diagnose this problem on my own but I can see It's more than I can handle. Here is my system info and a log of previous failure reports and bug checks. I hope I have done them correctly as I have no experience whatsoever and have relied completely on information I could read at Microsoft. I had a problem with the computer going to blue screen and not restarting previously. It got so bad that it would not restart at all. I used a drive washer and wiped out everything. I used my XP Installation disc and reinstalled windows XP. I thought the problem was solved and now the computer is doing it again. I have some theories …

How do I disable shortcut keys in WinXP. In particular Ctrl A. My mother-in-law, aged 85 with very stiff fingers, frequently, but accidentally, types Ctrl A instead of Shift A. She then continues typing and complains when she has lost everything. How can I turn this key off? Thanks.

RCMD and other issues
by Guest ITGuy- 0 replies

We have a computer that started out with a problem logging into an Intranet site of ours. The user on that machine only gets an error and this site uses windows authentication to logon automatically. Anyway, another possibly related issue is that the ability to RCMD to the machine does not work either. We have tried to drop the machine from the domain and rejoin and it seems to work for 5-10 minutes and then it goes back to the same problems. You also cannot access the event viewer, services, etc. remotely through an MMC. Other things like logging in and using exchange email works for the user though. Any ideas on what could fix this issue? Thanks in advan…

Hi, I searched for help on google without success. I could really use some help getting this to work. We have a workgroup (WG) with a server (SRVA) Win2003 on it and other PCs. It is connected to a Dell PowerConnect switch and it working fine. There is a second network (domain) to which we'd like to connect to a shared folder from SRVA. So, we installed a linksys router, connected to WAN port to the outside network (domain) and put our workgroup server in the routers DMZ. I can map the drive using Windows Explorer and get to the folder I need opening the file. The problem is we have a program that needs a unc to a file on that shared folder. The pr…

Delay power off
by Guest voidcoder- 12 replies

Hi, I'm currently working on a project with some specific storage which internally does a lot of write buffering. The whole thing is working perfect except of a single problem: when shutting down/suspending/hibernating/ rebooting or whatever the power is cut too fast and the storage (it is USB bus powered) is not able to complete the cached pending writes thus we are loosing/corrupting data. Is there any way to delay the power off. I mean, can I insert an artificial delay after the system completed the disk I/O (i.e. closed files, flushed registry hives etc) but before the power is turned off. It is a dirty solution, I know, and therefore our Linux colleagues …

Windows Shutdown
by Guest Tojib- 1 reply

When I shut down Windows (XP Professional), instead of everything going automatically I am getting a message End Program THEEJM_Wnd, asking me to END NOW. When I select END NOW, I soon get a message End Program WMS Idle, asking me to END NOW. Can anyone suggest how I might get the auto shutdown process to handle this again? I don't know what has changed. Thanks.
