Help on "Missing Profile Windows XP"
by Guest David- 3 replies
I started XP pro today and received the msg. "Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted" error logging in Now when I log into my account, the system thinks all of my user files are in "c:\Documents and Settings\TEMP\" rather than the "c:\Documents and Settings\david" directory. I know how to repair this issue, but I am wondering if this is an indication of a larger problem. Eg. is a repair of the profile sufficient or should I reinstall XP before more issues surface. Thanks

Sound Problems
by Guest ColTom2- 4 replies

Hi: I have a Sony desktop VGC-RA716G with Windows XP MCE2005 SP3 and all updates installed. Have a Sound Max Integrated Digital Audio. I don't know it this is integrated with motherboard or is a separate sound card? Sounds as if it possibly is integrated with MB? I have lost all abilities to play any sound files from either internal or external source. However, I am getting a bleed through on my speakers with sorta cracking or bumping sounds. I have checked all speaker connections etc, but still no sound from sound files. If I recall I think that I heard the noise that I now hear previously to some degree when playing sound files recently. …

Read only folder, changing attribute
by Guest Bruce Leavitt- 3 replies

I use netscape composer for ftp stuff, having a problem. Because it needs to write to a temp folder. I think I found the problem in that the netscape folder has read only clicked. I tried unclicking and applying but it does not stay? I tried safe mode in admin mode with no luck tried doing individual folders with no luck when I click the apply, doesn't so anything I know in previous versions it would sift the files and folders and unlock them? thanks Bruce

If I reboot, I am fine for a few hours, then no page opens again. Firefox opens pages fine, as well as e-mail (Outlook) works fine. Started with IE7 I upgraded to IE8 Beta, still the same thing. I can open local pages on my PC, but not on the web. If I go to Tools-->Connections-->LAN settings IE locks up and must be closed with Task Manager. I have uninstalled IE7 and re-installed, same issue. Working within a home LAN, all other PCs work fine. All security settings at default levels. What is my 1394 Connection? Windows seems to have added it as some virtual connection, I tried disabling it, but same issues, it is back on now, but why??

Hi, A file 'WFV3.tmp' always appears in my Windows/Temp dir. Can't delete it, scanned with McAfee AV/Firewall doesn't see it, seems to get bigger each time I start up (about 28 megs now). Any ideas what it is? I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 updated. Thanks. Raymo.

Can't seem to delete fonts
by Guest chowchow- 1 reply

I did something weird because I was in a hurry and now I can't get rid of these specific fonts. I tried the basic way which was to select the fonts in the Fonts folder in Control Panel and I selected 'Delete' but it kept giving me this message: "Cannot delete file. Cannot read from the source file or disk." A strange thing is that the file size of each of these fonts is 0. What does it mean?? I tried to reinstall the same fonts hoping it would just replace the previous ones but it's not working. What should I do?

Bizarre problem with Explorer
by Guest KevinQ- 6 replies

Since the installation of SP3, Windows Explorer has started acting strangely. I'm not sure what triggers it, but it seems to be network-related, possible when the system is accessed rather than when it goes looking. The symptoms are the appearance of multiple dektop entities in the folder pane (an example: http://Quitt.net/ExplorerBug/TooManyDesktops.png ), and explorer not being able to find or access some subdirectories. Close the explorer window and open a new one, and everything's fine for a while. Sometimes days, sometimes minutes. This has happened on every one of my XP systems, includeing XP 64-bit. Yes, I have scanned for malware with numer…

Keyboard Problem
by Guest RN1- 2 replies

I have WinXP Pro installed in C: as well as D: i.e. when I switch on my PC, I can select which OS to log into (dual boot). I had to recently change my motherboard after which I find that though Windows gives me the dual boot option, I can't move between the OS using the Up/Down arrow key on the keyboard. This forces me to log into the OS that is selected by default. Please note that I didn't re-install Windows after changing the motherboard. Also when my PC starts, pressing the Del key on the keyboard takes me to the BIOS but pressing F8 to go to the Advanced Startup Options doesn't work. In other words, the keyboard stops working after the first screen when t…

SP3 and DSL
by Guest Gary S. Terhune- 12 replies

Just checking to see what problems, if anything, people using DSL might be having. I don't have any, but a client across town does. She should be getting close to 3Gbps and is only getting maybe 400 to 100 Mbps. Instead of 300 KB/s downloads, she's getting anything from under 10 up to 50. While I'm still working on t-shooting the problem (need to get a laptop over there to test with, check wiring, etc.), but the timing of the issue coincides more or less with when SP3 was installed and I've heard of a lot of complaints around town over the last few months about speeds. So, any helpful hints, any anecdotes, any links that discuss the issue would be grea…

Please help, we are attempting to connect a workstation to an NT domain controller, our domain is "glvsr" Thanks. Mike we recieve the following error message: The domain name glvsr might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS. If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration. The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain glvsr: The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
