Have workstation with XP SP2 installed. When a non-admin users power's up the machine from cold-start and attempts to login, the file share is not accessible - getting "\\FileServ\Users\<username>\<folder> is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Access is denied. Network path was not found." Basically, person has permission on the \\FileServ\ server. From the \\FileServ\Users\<username>\PCDesktop - there is a subfolder that is used to populate the desktop icons for user. It's way we handle this for agency and has no issue for over 200 users. I can login this person on another workstation without …

Dell doesn't want people to get XP pro as downgrade rights from Vista Business... I have a friend on the phone and she is in tears.. she hates vista (and with very good reason) and I told her that if she gets vista business and ultimate dell can install XP pro on her computer as downgrade rights. Apparently the dell employee insists that dell cannot do that UNLESS someone buys one of a couple of computers from them that they have included this option... the models are: Dell systems that are part of the downgrade rights program are: Latitude laptops, OptiPlex desktops and Dell Precision workstations Dell Vostro laptops and desktops Dell Gaming sy…

Windows is not saving any of my settings.
by Guest Jay- 4 replies

Example: I turn up the "Device Volume" in Sounds and Audio Devices Properties and next time I start the computer it's back all the way down. I put my computer on Standby (start>turn off computer>standby) and it won't come out fo the Standby. Even though it Power Options Properties I have Turn off monitor: Never, Turn off hard disk: Never, System stanby: Never. Before I just hit the powerbutton and there it was, a few seconds later, ready to go. The only way to make it come back is to hard boot it by holding down the power button for a few seconds. IE is not remembering any settings at all it almost always defaults to its default factory settings…

Desktop settings tabs disappear after virus attack.
by Guest Maurice- 6 replies

One of my users managed to open a spoof email supposedly from UPS which unleashed a trojan - some sort of fake virus warning. I managed to remove the virus which has installed a .bmp file as the desktop image but then managed to turn off a couple of the tabs on desktop properties. When you fire up desk.cpl in Control Panel there are only three tabs: Themes Appearance Settings two missing ones: Desktop ScreenSaver So now I can't reset desktop images or set screensaver properties. I looked in Local Security Policies but couldn't find anything obvious there and can't seem to find a config file for desk.cpl which could have been altered. If any…

NTbackup SystemState
by Guest Jack B. Pollack- 2 replies

Hi, I just want to confirm that when I use NTbackup and check the tree option for SystemState (BU set is on tape or another hard drive), that the system state is included in the actual backup and not just backed up (copied) to the local system32/config folder. I am pretty sure the answer is yes, but I dont want to assume and find out that I am wrong when I need it! Thanks

Robocopy log (find failures)
by Guest Jordan- 1 reply
Just did a massive copy from one drive to another with RoboCopy. 250 GB total. I copied and logged and at the end of the 40 MB log file I see that I had 3 files fail out of the 750,000+ files. Every file is listed in the log where it seems all of them show "new file". I tried to do a seach on the file for "Fail" but I only find fail if it is in the file name or the summary at the end. What are some things I can search for to find what file has failed. Normally I would just stick this in Excel and sort, but I can't put in 3/4 of a million rows into Excel.

XP Pro OEM recent re-activation failures
by Guest David B.- 24 replies
We have a few hundred identical PC's we built for many clients back in 2004, on various occasions due to malware or general corruption we format and reload them. Up until a month ago they were reactivating just fine, now every one of them is requiring that I call in to get them activated. Almost all of them have been running for years since their last activation. These are XP Pro OEM licenses being reinstalled with a genuine OEM SP2 CD onto the original PC. Any ideas? Did MS change something in the activation scheme? -- ---- Crosspost, do not multipost http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm How to ask a question http://support.microsoft.com/kb/5…

Batch files acting erratically?
by Guest Ross- 5 replies
If I go into the command prompt and type "defrag C:" (without quotes) everything works fine. However, if I run that exact same command from a batch file the command constantly repeats itself over and over like it's stuck in some kind of loop. If I write start defrag c: then about 250 cmd windows open and do nothing. I've checked DOSKEY /macros and they are empty (as they should be) Although it doesn't seem like a big deal it has me rather agitated. Anybody have any idea what is going on? Any help would be much appreciated.

RE: Starting Up Computer (Programs that load automatically) Hi, Normally when getting rid of startup menu items I just remove them from MSConfig, through Start/Run, but when I execute the command it is returning nothing. It looks like I do not HAVE MsConfig on this PC. I do have a MSconfig file in the C:\i386 folder, but it appears to be called msconfig._ex so I am not sure whether this file is corrupt or what. It is a Dell Windows XP Home Edition. Any idea's? Tracey

Double clicking Network Drive opens My Documents instead
by Guest Bruce R- 3 replies

Hello... I have a user running Win XP sp2. Whenever she double clicks My Computer (or accesses it from Start - My Computer) all drives are displayed properly. Then when she double clicks the Shared Network drive, her My Documents folder is displayed instead. The only work around is for her to display the folders on the left, and then navigate to the shared drive. I right-clicked on it and chose Properties. It says that it's the I: drive (out network share). I was going to do System Restore, but she told me "it's always been like that." I'm wondering if its a Registry entry or what I could do to fix it other than using recovery disks. Any help is gre…

External devices and Autoplay does not work
by Guest K Stonefield- 1 reply
Hello, When I connect a Flash Drive or an SD card into my computer, the AutoPlay feature does not work anymore. I right-click on each device in "My Computer" and choose "Properties" and then "Autoplay" tab. Somehow it's always set to Music files but I choose Mixed Content and choose to always prompt me for action (which I've always done anyway). But when I exit, insert an external device, and check Properties again, it's set back to Music and the Autoplay feature still doesn't work. The only external device that works with Autoplay is my external hard drive connected via USB. Any advice or suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks! -K -- In t…
