XP freezes when CD/DVD is used
by Guest HW- 3 replies
I cannot use any combination of CD/DVD ROM or RAM drive. The drive(s) start spinning (LED flickers) and within a a few seconds the PC freezes. A soft boot is not possible. This happens with any type of media inserted and files types, eg data files, html, pictures, music etc. However, occationally there is no problem at all. The same media works fine on other XP and VISTA PC. This fault was present before I had to replace the motherboard recently and is still present. I naturally suspect XP..... I would be greatful for some clues. Thanks ..... HW

Stability of an Upgrade to Windows XP?
by Guest Bill- 17 replies
I've bought a used 2GHz Windows XP computer that I think is an upgrade from Windows ME (under user accounts there is a description for 'newuser' that states "Account upgraded from Windows Millennium Edition"). I have not yet hooked the computer up to the internet. I've run Norton DiskDoctor and Norton Windoctor. I've already scanned for viruses and spyware. Is there anything I can do to check/test the stability of this used Windows XP system? Thanks!!!

Log On Screen and screensaver
by Guest Robert- 5 replies

Hi all, I just started experiencing a problem I've never had before in XP. I bought a new hard drive, installed XP, and now when my aquarium screensaver kicks in after so many minutes, when I come back to close the screensaver, and want to use the computer again, the screensaver closes, but now for some reason my computer has gone back to the XP logon screen, where I have to select either my administrator account or limited account, and enter the appropriate password, to get back to the screen I was working on before the screensaver started up. I never had this issue in the past with XP. Anyone know what's kicking XP back to the logon screen wheneve…

How to PREVENT Paint from expanding when pasting?
by Guest Robert Macy- 20 replies
Sorry, probably wrong group, but hope someone knows... My problem is that when pasting an image to Paint, the image enlarges to accept the new image. For example, Print Screen, then ctrl-v into Paint ALWAYS changes the size of image. Also, pasting from another image (when larger) automatically enlarges image. How to stop this 'feature' and make it operate like the Win98 Paint? Sometimes spend great effort to get the size of the image I need then WinXP Pain, without asking, changes it. Any ideas? Robert

Help me understand Flash problem
by Guest nomail1983@hotmail.com- 2 replies

Please help me understand a Flash problem. It is now mysteriously fixed, but I would like to understand how. I had uninstalled and re-installed the latest Adobe Flash (version 9). But when I went to a particular web (AARP driving safety "test drive"), I did not get any audio. I tried all the obvious things. I toggled the speaker off and on; sliding the volume to the max. The audio and speaker hardware worked; I was able to hear the audio on an e-card that I received recently. In IE6, I enabled every add-on, cleared history and deleted cookies and temp files (including offline content). I restarted the system. "What made it work finally?" I think it w…

Bad disk or virus?
by Guest Paul H- 12 replies

Do I have a bad hard disk or a virus? I did a virus scan maybe 30 minutes before I got this problem. The normal Windows XP Pro displays on the screen, like it normally does when starting up, then the system gets the blue problem below (saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"). When I start in safe mode it stops, displaying the black screen below (ending with "DontGo.sys"). I installed the disk in a different computer and the problem occurred, telling me the disk has the problem, not the computer. TIA, Paul

Hard Drive replacement question? (Ata or Sata, or Pata)
by Guest Tony- 1 reply

So I am trying to replace the internal hard drive in my emachines computer. I bought the computer in December of 2005. I just need clarification on a few things. So far I removed the old drive. Here are the specs... Name: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 It was connected with a cable that said Serial Ata. And a power cable with 5 wires. With P8, P9 and P10 written on them. I am pretty sure it is an Ide drive as well. When I go to the store what specs are the most important to look for?

Now I have the Administrator on my Welcome Screen, that I DO NOT wish to see anymore. I am the Admin, and don't need to see an additional Admin. How do I delete it from the Welcome Screen. Thanks In Advance! "Kelly" wrote: > Hi, > > Didn't mean to come across pointing in your direction, personally. If I > did, am sorry about that. by Guest Apan- 5 replies

The computer clock suddenly decided to go slow. I took my computer to lacal Best Buy to check for sound card. I unplugged the machine and took it to the store and I was told at the store that my hard drive was not working. The machine had no problem prior to unplugging the machine. This machine is locally built. I took the machine back to the person who built it and he found out the C-drive was disabled. After correcting that I came back home and then I found the date and time is at May 2005. I had reset the closck using time.windows.com. Still the clock is going slow. Now I can not connect to time.windows or nist for update. The motherboard is about yea…

LG Optical Drive & Windows XP Home SP2
by Guest Tevibear- 7 replies

I have an LG Super Milti RW optical drive that is supposed to read and write both CDs and DVD data. However when I installed the drive into my XP box, I could only get it to read and write CDs and not DVDs. I located the automatic firmware update software (no easy task) and installed it. After the updates were complete, it still would not recognize or burn DVDs. :( Has anyone else had this kind of trouble? If so, what was your solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are some facts about the hardware and my systyem that might be of help. LG Drive Specifications from Device Manager: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H54N (assuming GSA-H54N is the model)…
