I had encrypted a folder under a particular user account. Now I am unable to login to that user account probably due to incorrect password. This means that I cannot access that encrypted folder at all. 1. Is there any way I can un-encrypt it now? 2. I have another userid with administrative privileges. Can something be done with this? Thanks.

Cannot change/remove software with the add remove software control
by Guest Ken Springer- 4 replies

I've been uninstalling a lot of unused software, running spam/spyware, installing all the updates, etc., all the usual stuff, I hope, on a friend's computer. It was a mess, she sometimes had to manually shut down and restart the computer when coldbooting. After this last go around in doing all of this, something affected the administrator's rights. I can no longer add or removed software using the add removed software control panel. The guest account has been disabled, so her administrator's account was the only active account. The option to change/remove a program is not longer available for any installed software when you open the add/remove contr…

by Guest voujnbwuotkd@yahoo.com- 18 replies

I'm sure that most people don't have any idea as to what a computer registry is unless you are a computer technician or expert. It is basically a database which stores various different settings and options utilised by your computer. The information consists of the various software programs which are installed on your computer, hardware, operating system information and various other user preferences. So basically any time you add, remove or make changes to your software you change or edit an entry in your registry. Having said this you can understand why it is so easy to get registry problems. The average pc user will continuously add and remove software applic…

Hi, I am encountering a strange FTP problem. Everything was fine when I last used FTP several months ago, but this week when I tried, I always get a message something "Error reading response from server - Port failed" (WS_FTP Pro) or "Failed to establish data socket" (CuteFTP Pro0, but both probrams report a connection is made. As mentioned, I have tried more than one FTP client and receive the same result no matter what FTP site I attempt to log in to. A copy of the WS_FTP session log is included below. Hi, Running XP Home SP3 Firefox 2.0.0.16 (primary browser) IE 7.0.5730.11 ZAlarm 7.0.483.000 AVG Free 8.0.138 I started to run CCleaner which I do periodically, and was notified of an upgrade which I downloaded and installed. I set a Restore point before the install. Everything seemed okay with the install and I ran clean ups on Windows, Applications and the Registry. I have done all three in the past many times with no problems. I also saved the registry entry backup to my desktop before the final deletion of the registry changes. I have two such entries on my desktop now. Once all the cleanup was done, I right-clicked on a text file I have on…

RE: Suddenly no free space (Resolved) Thanks for your help Guys. Armed with WinDirStat I visited my friend and ran it on his full drive. It immediately showed up the problem. My friend is not very computer wise and he unknowingly dumped the contents of a data CD into the C\. Funny, it was about the time he first noticed that his drive was full. Thanks for WinDirStat, a great little utility. Lyn. My first post. This is a WIN98 question but I suppose it could apply to XP. My friend has an old WIN98 computer that his wife uses only for her Email. The active partition is 6GB and has always been about 2GB used. Suddenly it reports that it has only a few M…

Laptop with windows XP won't start up. Need help for fix/save.
by Guest John Davis- 10 replies

Hello: First, the batery indicator light and the two adjacent lights (one for power, the other, the processor) were flashing on and off. Then, my computer cut off while I was using it. The screen didn't go black; rather, I heard a whistle noise of sorts, whereupon a blue screen came up (a screen that looked something like the screen you see when you start Windows in safe mode, but not exactly that screen). I think I just shut down at that point by holding the power button down. Next, I tried to turn the computer on without its being plugged in. Absolutely no power from the battery. So I removed the battery. Then I started it again, plugged in of course…

I enabled boot logging using F8 at boot time. I am done with the logging, but I notice that the ntbtlog.txt file is still being written to. I checked boot.ini but there is no /bootlog switch. How do I disable boot logging, or is it normal for this ntbtlog.txt file to always be there? Thanks. ju.c
