Reinstalled XP on a New hard drive
by Guest Gena Z- 2 replies

My hard drive crashed and I was unable to boot. Since my documents were not backed up I purchased a new hard drive, and reinstalled XP with the hopes of being able to access my files from the orignal hard drive. The installation went fine and I am now able to access certain folders on my old hard drive. However, I cannot access files under my user profile in My Documents. I get the error message that access is denied. I have a feeling this is due to a conflict in the user profiles from XP on the old drive and XP on the new drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Vista To XP, Whats Wrong?
by Guest Roberto- 4 replies
Bought a computer with Vista. Es no bueno (at least right now.) I had a computer with a working XP hard drive. Ive succesfully taken that HD out of the old computer and pluged it into the new one. Now the issue: Computer starts, it recognizes the hard drive. I see the XP boot up screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then the computer restarts. I am able to access it in safe mode, so at least I know I didnt completely screw things up. Its almost like its restarting the computer before XP has a chance to boot. Questions/solutions anyone?

Windows Update not normal
by Guest MN- 1 reply

After logging into Win XP as administrator, the Windows Update icon appeared in the notification area of the task bar (bottom right of desktop screen). As I have done numerous times before, I initiated the update process, and then hovering the mouse pointer over the icon, was displayed "Downloading 0%". However, the "0%" did not increase as it normally would. Instead, after a few minutes, the icon disappeared. Subsequent logons as administrator displayed the Windows Update icon, and hovering the mouse pointer over the icon, was displayed "Downloading 0%". Again, after a few minutes, the icon disappeared and nothing was downloaded. NO ERROR MESSAGE APPE…

Conflict of Java and ActiveX control?.. slow video
by Guest Roger C- 0 replies

My computer has 2.6Ghz Celeron Processor, 512 RAM connecting with a wireless connection. My internet browser is Firefox 2.0.0.4 I have very choppy video playback when I go on youtube.com or netflix or other video in websites and the quality of the image is poor compared to when I first got the computer. I have updated all video software, scanned my computer for viruses and used spybot. How can adjust how much buffer size is being used when playback, does having java and activex working together make the computer run any slower?

Windows XP Recovery Console
by Guest t.hilchey- 7 replies

I am trying to resote my fathers computer. He has XP Pro SP2. It crashed and won't boot to hard drive. When I run the XP disk and load the repair option it's all good untill I get to the Recovery Console screen. From most of what I've read online, it supposed to look like this: "The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality." "Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer." "1. C:WINDOWS" But this says: "The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality." "Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer." "The path or file specified is not valid." "C:\>" Do you think…

COMPLETE backup of harddrive contents 1 2

Hi, I am trying to do the right hting by completely backing up my harddrive to a removable hard drive. What I am aiming for is a complete and total back of the files that I currently have on the computer so that if my laptop hard drive finally took a crap on me, I could simply get a new hard drive for it, install XP on it again, and drag and drop the files onto the hard drive... I don;t know if what I said made much sense, but I think some of you understand. See, waht I've done to my computer is tweaked the he|| out of it to make it go REALLY fast, and I've got quite a few prgrams on it that I would prefer NOT to have to reinstall because I would be here …

unwanted automatic internet logon

Win XP, IE7 I get an unwanted automatic internet logon every time I start my PC. Using TCPIP view, I have ascertained that it could be caused by something called "System:4" The TCPIP view lists the process as follows:- System:4 TCP SN048816020001:microsoft-ds SN048816020001:0 LISTENING If I try to use process properties it won't allow. What is it, do I need it, and how can I stop it from automatically connecting to the internet? donwb

Items not remaining valid in Favorites list
by Guest badatti2d- 1 reply

I use XP Home, SP2, and run IE7. For some reason, when I go to a site that I want to save in my Favorites list (http://www.google.com, or http://www.worldstart.com, for example), I do the pulldown from Favorites in the toolbar, and select 'Save To Favorites'. This seems to work, and I can return to my Favorites list in my Start menu and click on the site and return there....the problem is, it seems that after using some of these url's a couple of times, when I click on them i get a message that says, " The target "" of this Internet Shortcut is not valid. Go to the Internet Shortcut property sheet and make sure the target is correct. " I don't know why …

I just got a message that XP was shutting down. When everything started back up everything seemed fine. About 15 min after the reboot I got a "system change detected" message from F-Secure. Everything still seems fine. Does XP store the information it displayed on the blue screen? How to I find it? Thanks BTW I have not installed anything on my computer in quite a while. I mainly surf the Internet and watch avi movies I have collected.

I am periodically getting a BSOD. I don't know when it happens because I am usually gone when it happens. I have not installed any hardware, except a hp printer that I uninstalled the software and reinstalled. Please help! Thanks

Locking Desktop in Win XP Home Edition
by Guest Tevibear- 4 replies

Is there are way to lock the desktop with a password like in professional version if you need to leave the computer for a minute but don't want to shut down all of your applicaitons and log off? I find this very annoying that I cannot use a shortcut to a password protected screen saver like I used to in older version of windows. My son likes to push the buttons and stuff when I'm away from the terminal. :( Thx Tevi

upgrading from xp home to xp pro
by Guest clueless O- 2 replies

we need to upgrade the 2 computers at our little office from xp home to xp pro. We bought the xp pro Upgrade at the store. (1) Does it only work on 1 computer? Do I need to get one for each of the 2 computers? (2) I read somewhere that we'll need the actual original xp home disc from each computer during the upgrade, is that true? (xp home was preinstalled on the computers and I don't know if we actually have the discs - we have the licenses). Thanks in advance for all youre help Owen
