ftp connection disallowed while firewall on
by Guest Nathan- 2 replies

My first symptom was when I was trying to download teamspeak. it pointed me to an ftp site for the download but when I clicked on it, it did nothing or gave me 'page not found' message. The second symptom: I try to use the command prompt function 'ftp' to a ftp server I know works and It says that it connected but it immediately says "connection closed by remote host." Also, when I try to use Core FTP LE to connect to my webserver's ftp site it couldn't even connect at all. However, I did narrow it down a bit. I turned off my firewall from the security center and everything worked perfectly fine. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank Nathan…

Mass renaming
by Guest Kieron Capehorn- 9 replies

Is there a method of renaming all the files in a folder systematically? I have a folder full of files that begin with numbers. I want to add a 0 to the beginning of each filename (i.e. 1.xls will become 01.xls). I have tried putting the command 'rename *.* 0*.*' into command, but that replaced the first letter of each filename with a 0, rather than adding a 0. This there an easy way to do this? Thanks.

Running process woes in Windows Task Manager
by Guest Jackson- 9 replies
A process named Agent.exe is active in Task Manager to a ridiculous degree. The name pops up as a running process and during several seconds appears to make scores of read/write calls to the registry. Then it disappears for several more seconds until it comes back up and repeats the process (over and over and over...). I tracked the program to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdatServices\. I renamed it to ZZZagent.exe and rebooted. The machine goes thru a frenzy of trying to find Agent.exe which I renamed. It tells me to insert the ScanSoft Omni Page SE 4.0 disk and etc. Finally I keep cancelling the requests and it tells me that the Wind…

Hi. I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I could use some help. I'm trying to transfer files from a nine year old laptop that has serial and parallel ports but no Ethernet or USB ports, to a more recent computer that has parallel and USB ports but no serial port. What kind of cable do I need using which ports on each computer in order to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard? -- Thanks, YN

process for hyperlinks
by Guest PAULinLAOS- 3 replies

I have set up Access Manager on my computer to limit what programs can/cannot be opened on my User Account so that people who use the computer cannot play around with two many things and to minimize virus opening up. In Access Manager, you have select every program file to allow it to work. Now, I have a problem in that when I click on hyperlinks in a Word document or an Outlook file, I cannot open the link. This is because I have not allowed, in Access Manager, the program file that makes hyperlinks work between programs. So, I am looking for the name of the file that must be burried in Windows that actually allows the computer to open hyperlinks with…

Same power scheme for All Users
by Guest Kansana- 0 replies

I have to set the standby timeout value of the system to 10 minutes. To achieve this, I have created a custom power scheme with the required power settings and have set this power scheme as the active one using PowerCfg.exe. Powercfg.exe sets the power scheme for the current user. Please let me know how can I make All Users have the same power scheme. Thanks, Kansana

Windows Desktop Search returns no results
by Guest Gordon- 1 reply

Not sure whether this is the right group... Windows Desktop Search returns no results for ( for example) scanpst.exe. The Search Companion returns the location almost instantly. WDS has been installed for some months so indexing shouldn't be a problem. Why doesn't WDS find files? Thanks

Windows XP Folder Permissions
by Guest klumpy- 1 reply

I have set up a directory structure for a project and set varying permissions for different subfolders. I would like to copy this directory structure for each new project I set up, and to have the permissions remain with the new copy. Simply "copy/paste""dragging and dropping" or ""dragging and dropping" the directory structure doesn't copy the permissions. Is there a way to easily copy these permissions?

Install Software Remote via Mapped Drive gives "Go To The Control Panel" Error
by Guest Bobbie Weeks (Ms)- 2 replies

Install Software Remote via Mapped Drive gives "Go To The Control Panel" Error I'm hoping this is the right place to ask this. On PC1, I've got a shared folder which contacts installation files for a program. Using a batch file, on PC2, I map to the shared folder on PC1 (which works) and start the install file called setup.exe. I get an error occur then saying "Please go to the control panel to install and configure system components". However, if while still mapped, I browse to the mapped drive and double-click the setup.exe file, it works! Why is this and how to I get it to work automatically through the batch file without erroring?
