Shutdown problem

I get the warning message, "You have exceeded your profile space by 5058KB". When I double-click on the X Icon, I get a list of applications and their size - stating that my Max profile size is 30000KB. Question: How do I reduce remove items from my profile (or increase the maximum profile) so that I can Logoff? Thanks, Tony

Networking nightmare...

I have a real head scratcher here... I've been banging my head against the wall for a couple of days now. I've stumped a friend at work who is an MCSE, and I'm just about ready to wipe the system and start from scratch. This is what I'm really trying to avoid. I have a Windows XP Home Edition system with SP2 that has been running fine for several months. This is connected to a Linksys broadband router that does DHCP. Let me stress that this configuration has worked flawlessly for months. The system is a custom built, that I built myself. The motherboard is an Abit AB9 Pro that has a pair of built-in GigE network ports. A few nights ago everything…

It seems that when excel has a file opened, the WinXP search cannot find it. If you close the file in excel, WinXP suddenly sees it again. Is there any way to search for files, whether or not they're opened in Excel?

Startup problem
by Guest Bill S- 2 replies

I have another two year old XP, SP2, Symantac, all up to date. On initial booting, I get a "Windows did not start successfully...." I have tried all the options---safe mode, last configuration, etc. All lead to "Unmountable Boot Volume" message and Windows will not start. No recent hardware or software additions. This has happened before, but have always been able to reboot. Not this time after over 20 tries. Solution? -- Bill in California

Usable RAM
by Guest Paul33- 12 replies

XP Pro, SP2 I have 4GB RAM. XP says not. I have read the Service Note that says why, but that doesn't help much. I want to assign 2GB to Photoshop, however, PS says that there is less than 2 available and suggest assigning no more than 1.232 Should I simply ignore this and assign 2 to PS? If not, how do I fix this?

by Guest Roland A.- 3 replies

For a dual boot Windows system, for Win2k and WinXP, is there any way to avoid dual installations of apps? E.g., Adobe Acrobat Reader, is there a way of avoiding having to install the reader for both systems so as to avoid doubling the apps space on HD? Thanks, r.a.

Why is an enviroment variable not updated correctly in a for loop.

If I run the following script in a directory with two files named test1.txt & test2.txt, FILELIST should have the value of "Test2.txt;Test1.txt;NOFILES". Instead it has the value of "Test2.Txt;NOFILES". Can any one tell me why? Or how to get it to work correctly? @SET FILELIST=NOFILES @for %%f in (*.txt) do @( @echo %%f @set FILELIST= %%f;%FILELIST% @echo %FILELIST% ) Thanks,

I installed Microsoft Robotics Studio (MSRS) many times, and most of them I got this "Rename temp file failed" error during the setup (even though it happened to work a few times). Do you know how to solve this problem? I remember that once I uninstalled it after getting that error, and reinstalled it in D:\ instead of C:, and that time it worked. The only difference between C and D is that my C drive is FAT32 whereas D is in NTFS. Do you think this could be a problem? Please let me know, since I really need this to work these days... (for more info: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1815099&SiteID=1) Thanks in advance, Alberto

Changing audio volume causes a beep
by Guest PSiegmann@mail.nu- 1 reply

Hi newsgroup. There is an annoyance with XP, that I noticed already years ago.. but I never decided to to something about it. Until now. OK: when you change the volume level (with sndvol32.exe) of the general channel (not wave, sw-synthesizer etc. but the one the far left), it will cause a "beep" of the system speaker. Of course, everything works ok, and I noticed that not only on this PC, it seems to be by design. That behavior never occured with earlier windows versions. So, how to turn that beep off? It's very distracting.
