2nd paging file not being used?
by Guest Flick Olmsford- 6 replies

A user had a 20GB hard drive that was being max'd out. I added a 120 GB hdd and transferred a few folders to the new drive (now E:) Ther is still loads of space on the new hard disk. I tried creating a 2nd paging file on the new hdd (E:) in addition to the one on C: According to Microsoft, the system should use the paging file on the less frequently used drive - E: in this case. When I use MSINFO32, it lists the paging file as c:\pagefile.sys. Not referencing E: Would MSINFO32 show the currently used page file or would it always show c:\pagefile. I should add that the c: pagefile has a custom set size range for the pagefile but the one on …

Failure to "Get New Mail" on JUNO
by Guest Dick Ashley- 3 replies
A blind friend of mine has a new computer with Win XP. He continues to use JUNO for e-mail. A few days ago JUNO reported the availability of new dialup numbers. I helped him choose the several local numbers (including the one he had been using) and correct dialing directions. We then clicked "Get New Mail". The computer connected to JUNO and appeared to download messages -- but very very slowly. After about 10 minutes the screen reached 100%. I closed that screen and was presented with another that reported -- Messages: 0 messages sent, 0 messages received Status: Mail transmission has been cancelled My friend and I are mystified and frustrated. Does any…

iexplore.exe running in the background after reboot
by Guest Ale- 5 replies
Each time I reboot my PC the task "iexplore.exe" is running in the background forcing me to terminate it from Task Manager. My computer is free from any kind of malware (virus, trojans, spyware, etc), I fully scanned it with at least 3 major antivirus/antispyware products. Once ended from Task Manager the task "iexplore.exe" won't reappear unless of course I use Internet Explorer. Also, I checked the Startup tab of msconfig and no reference whatsoever to "iexplore.exe".How can I fix this? Thanks.

Re: Changing screen resolution rearranges desttop Downloaded this but have not been able to get it to work. Can someone help? Control Your Desktop Icons 11.05.02 When you temporarily change your desktop to a lower resolution-while using Safe mode, for example-Windows can wreak havoc with your careful positioning of desktop icons. A free download, available at http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/layout.zip, lets you save and later restore your icon layout. Download Layout.zip and unzip it to extract two files. Move Layout.dll to the Windows\System32 folder. Double-click on Layout.reg to add it to the Registry. I…

Thumbnail View and Non-Supported File Types
by Guest Lythandra- 1 reply

Hi there, Is there any way to get a folders Thumbnail View to work on what would normally be a non-supported (non-supported to Thumbnail View) file type? For instance I work in a millwork industry setting and we use several large millwork machines that get programmed via .mpr files. Now the .mpr file is kinda like an autocad file but with instructions for the machine to slice and dice the piece of material. If you were to open the file with the correct program (which is on each computer), you would get a picture of the piece. If the Thumbnail View would work on this file type then it would be very easy for the machine user to choose which .mpr to r…

Calculator Plus
by Guest BBran- 0 replies

I am using XP Pro SP2 with all updates. I have the Powertoy "Calculator Plus" installed. It worked fine. I installed a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and now the calculator will work and then just stop working. In other words, I will start performing calculations and then it will quit responding to keystrokes or mouse clicks. I don't know that this is related to the keyboard but Any ideas? The standard calculator with Windows still works fine. Bob

offline files sync problem coming out of hibernation
by Guest ccfut- 0 replies

I have an XP PRo computer connected to a Win 2000 domain, with offline files configured (My Documents and Desktop). Both folders are redirected and Available Offline. This is setup in a GPO and works fine. Except I have one Sony VAIO laptop that has a problem synchronizing offline files when coming out of Hibernation. The user hibernates her PC, then comes into the office plugs it in and brings it out of hibernation. The system aquires a new IP address and can get on the internet. But the little blue and white computer icon down by the clock keeps telling her she needs to sync her offline files. If she double clicks this icon and starts a sync, then…

Windows XP Start Bar Not Responding
by Guest StarDuster- 4 replies
My Windows XP Professional start bar, including the task bar and clock, has stopped responding to any actions. I am unable to click on any items located there to open, close, or otherwise interact with them. When I do try to click (left or right click) on anything there I get the windows error "boop" sound. This is causing many headaches as I have to alt-tab though windows and use the windows key and arrow through the start menu taking up much more time than usual. Other than this issue, my pc is performing as it should. Thanks in advance for any help.

Max read performance on WinXP
by Guest Sandman- 0 replies

I've been tasked with setting up a network of WinXP clients. They're dual core desktops from Dell with 2GB RAM. They will be reading files over the network (CIFS), processing them and writing them back to the network drive. The files are large (400MB) and the reads will be sequential. Network is GbE. Assuming no server bottlenecks, how fast can I expect the WinXP clients to run? I realize best case is 400/125 ~ 4 seconds per file. But I have to wonder if the client can read that fast. Has anyone here run performance benchmarks of large file reads? Thanks, Sandman
