Hello, All! Anytime I put my machine on Standby it goes into Standby and then immediately comes out of Standby. Any thoughts as to why this would occur? Is there some setting I'm missing? Thanks, Colonel Blip E-mail: colonel.blip.at.bigfoot.com

hibernation mode always used
by Guest john d hamilton- 8 replies

When i switch on my pc from its' hibernate mode it boots up very quickly. Much quicker than when i turn it off in the conventional way. Since in hibernation, i cannot hear the cooling fan running; does that mean also that the hard drive is not spinning? If that's the case, would there be any reason *never* to switch it off in the conventional manner; but to always use the hibernate mode? Thanks for advice.

Hi running win xp pro on new dell d830 laptop. set up the computer name and the user name for laptop. computer name is LAPTOPRE, same as user name. but when i view the document and settings folder, the user folder is named "Jason" and is the only folder listed. this is how i initially set it up. wondering if i can rename the subfolder "Jason" to Laptop? when i login as administrator and try to rename i get error message access is denied. when i navigate to the control panel/user account, the user Jason is not listed, only user listed is Laptop. is there any way i can rename the subfolder "Jason" under documents and settings?

What really happens when Ctrl Alt Del is pressed?
by Guest Jimmy- 1 reply
We have an application (specifically Oracle Forms through JInitiator on I.E.7) which when opened for the first time everything runs really slow. The response is really bad, e.g. when typing a character it displays on screen after 2 secs. Strangely after we press ctrl alt del and then cancel, everything starts running normally. We are running on Sunray thin clients with Windows terminal services. The question is what does really happen when you press ctrl alt del? Why is ctrl alt del fixing this problem? Thanks, Demetris

Booting problems after deleting XP from the E partition of a 98SE machine
by Guest thanatoid- 1 reply
Hello As an experiment, I installed XP Pro on my 98SE machine, and after playing with it for a while, deleted it. Anyone interested can read about this in 24hrsupport.helpdesk. Anyway, I deleted XP, and the machine still gave me the "XP or Windows" boot menu. Needless to say, unnecessary and annoying. So I renamed boot.ini as well as bootsect.dos (fortunately I was not reckless enough to just delete them). Well, you know what happened. So I booted from a floppy and brought those two files back. The question: How the hell do I get rid of that boot menu, the two files in root of C:\ and (/if/ in fact XP messed around with the MBR) restore th…

I have desktop shortcuts for each of these and have set the properties to open maximized, but every time I open them they are in a very small window which is good for nothing. How can I set them to open maximized, or have them retain their size? Thanks.

'Switching Off' Keyboard
by Guest Blake Kaos- 0 replies

Is there any way to 'switch off' a keyboard on Win XP Pro and conversely, is there some way to switch it back on? It seems my main administrator profile has either been corrupted or somehow changed so that it does not recognise the keyboard. Other user profiles seem to work normally on the same hardware. I have tried to remove / reinstall the keyboard using Device Manager & tried to use an USB keyboard - all to no avail. I tried to copy the profile (sans the nti* files), but it is a pain to do so since I have to use the on-screen virtual keyboard to do so. Anyway, I have not been successful in transferring the old profile into a new profile. Bef…

Boot problems with serial device
by Guest MECSPB- 0 replies
So, I have a device connected at serial port and always on and sending data to the port. When XP restarts sometimes it understands it as mouse put driver on it and problems begin... Already tried fastdetect at boot.ini never helps - before at NT was NoSerialMice parameter, now it is substituted by fastdetect - but it never works. Could you recomend me how to solve this one? Can I turn off serial checking for mouse driver at all? Thx, Oleg

Disk Cleanup - Unable To Delete Restore Points
by Guest Nightsampler- 3 replies

In Disk Cleanup under "Other Options" I am unable to delete all but the most recent restore point. I can delete all points by disabling SR, and then re-enabling it, but I prefer using the recommended procedure. Any suggestions? or am I missing something obvious. -- Is All That We See Or Seem But A Dream Within A Dream.
