0xc0000005 Recycle Bin exception error is back
by Guest Opinicus- 0 replies

Using WinXP with all updates etc in place. Lately I've started getting the 0xc0000005 error again increasingly more frequently when I double-click on the Recycle Bin or do a right-click / Open. Right-click "Explore" and "Empty" cause no problems. Didn't KB938828 fix this? Has anyone else started seeing this behavior again? -- Bob http://www.kanyak.com

Multiple Save Dumps
by Guest Ross- 0 replies

Up to this point I have tried to diagnose this problem on my own but I can see It's more than I can handle. Here is my system info and a log of previous failure reports and bug checks. I hope I have done them correctly as I have no experience whatsoever and have relied completely on information I could read at Microsoft. I had a problem with the computer going to blue screen and not restarting previously. It got so bad that it would not restart at all. I used a drive washer and wiped out everything. I used my XP Installation disc and reinstalled windows XP. I thought the problem was solved and now the computer is doing it again. I have some theories …

installing hard drive in 2.5" USB case andf connecting to computer with XP for data salvage
by Guest John Davis- 7 replies

installing hard drive in 2.5" USB case andf connecting to computer with XP for data salvage Hello: I'm trying to salvage my hard drive. Following is the advice I got from a user of this newsgroup: "To see if your hard disk is still useable, remove it from the laptop and install it in an external 2.5" USB case. You can now connect this case to any Windows XP PC to check your files. Later on you can use the same case plus a 2.5" hard disk as your backup device. You'll be surprised how little it costs and how effective it is." Do you know where to find instructions for installing the hard drive into the case? Do they come with the case? Is this a simple p…

Greetings, During a lightning storm, the power failed. Upon reboot, a message indicated that new hardware had been found. I tried getting the drivers from the Windows XP Installation CD as well as other CDs, to no avail. This seems related to a USB 2.0 port? However, I am not sure. Can anyone help? In the hardware configuration the drivers it is trying to look for are 2Wire USB Remote NDIS Ethernet. I am trying the knowledge base in parallel, but my initial search yielded nothing. Thank you. Jean-Pierre P.S. This is the second time in as many weeks that I loose sofware in an abnormal shutdown...

XP Freezes
by Guest jp2msft- 2 replies

We reformatted my machine here at work about 2 months ago to gain some performance. DELL Optiplex GX620, 250 GB HDD, 3.4 GHz P4, 1.5 GB RAM Windows XP Professional, Service Packed with SP3 Periodically throughout the day, my PC now hangs (locks up, freezes, whatever you want to call it) for about 30 seconds. Very Irritating! I have run numerous RAM checking programs, and my RAM seems fine. After some time, my PC always releases control back to me. We have corporate TrendMicro antivirus, but if it is causing this problem - well, it did not cause it before I did the hard drive format. How do I figure out what is causing this?

NTBackup and multiple tapes
by Guest Jack B. Pollack- 2 replies

I want to be able to give one of my elderly clients a simple one-button backup icon using NTBackup. He is backing up to tape. I want him to rotate through several tapes before returning to the first. I am using a shortcut with command line: ntbackup backup "@C:\Backup Jobs\Selective.bks" /j "Selective Backup Job" /t "Selective BU" /n "Selective BU" If the tapes have different names (eg "Selective BU 1", "Selective BU2") NTBackup sits there waiting for a specific tape to be mounted. I want all the tapes to be used interchangeable. If I name all of the tapes with the same name I get a message when running my shortcut that multiple tapes have the same name. …

Want to downgrade my inspiron 1525 to XP pro
by Guest Liza- 5 replies

Hello, I'm new to this community... I'm not even sure if this is the right place to post this. Anyway, I want to downgrade my Inspiron 1525 Vista Home Basic to XP Pro. I have the XP CD with product key, and I've downloaded all the drivers off the Dell website. But I'm a bit confused on what to do after downloading all the drivers. I've also read in a few forums that I would need to change the SATA ACHI to ATA, is that correct? Is it possible to downgrade? I've only had this computer for two months, and some of my Job's applications/software don't work with vista... so I need XP. I've called Dell support and they didn't want to help me. I also understan…

Disabled registry due to new, undetected trojans
by Guest Mike S.- 3 replies

I recently had my computer infected with four trojans due to them being new and undetected by the majority of anti-virus programs. So I submitted them to AVG who confirmed they were trojans and updated their virus definitions. This removed the four trojans from my computer. However, I still have problems that need to be fixed. One of which is a disabled registry. Here's what needs fixing (from my HijackThis log): F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files \System\svchost.exe" O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5277E001-1190-3001-0699-ca3230262a11} - C: \Program Files\Common Files\System\wship_help.acm (file missing) O7 - HKCU\Software\Micr…

Macro to change mp3 file names
by Guest RonG- 12 replies
I'm running Windows XP Home. On one of my hard drives I have accumulated 10,000+ mps files which I have named (numbered) 0001 to 9999. I want to change all the files by adding a 0 before the existing name (i.e. 00001 to 09999). Can a macro be written to simplify this task, or do I have to tediously alter each file individually? Any help or tips gladly appreciated. -- Ron Perth Western Australia

Stuck booting into Safe Mode CLI
by Guest pford-@bcm.tmc.edu- 4 replies

Hello, My son's game computer running Windows XP Home edition got some nasty MalWare on it that has changed the protection of some files and folders and altered privileges that prevents me or the antiMalWare appls from deleting them. I had a terrible time getting safe mode to come up so I could log in as the administrator. At that point, it came up as a command line interface – and that is where I am stuck. It now always boots into the safe mode command line. When I get the screen to come up that gives me options for booting, like safe mode, safe mode CLI, last known good profile, etc., it still boots as safe mode CLI. How do I fix this? Also, it looks like…
