Service Pack 3 won't install

My brother cannot install the above on his HP slimline. All updates are current. Here is the timeline that he provided for me: Service Pack 3 Setup Error (the heading in the box) Access is Denied (after you click on this you get the message below) Service Pack 3 Installation Did Not Complete (after you click on this you get the message below) Select 'Ok" to undo the changes that have been made Then you restart the computer and you are back to SP2 and all seems to work fine. Any ideas from the group or should I just have him Google for help? Thanks, Steve T.

No "Repair" option when booting?

I am trying to do a repair install. When I boot from the CD, I don't get a repair or recovery option, it does "Setup is inspecting" and then goes into a fresh build sequence (loads drivers, asks me to select a partition). The CD is SP2, and I know the install is SP3. I know that means I should do a slipstream. However, previous to that I wanted to see the repair option at least appear... and it doesn't. Thoughts?

Flash Infection?

I have XP with all service packs. My system crashed and I rebooted but lost all USB ports including PCI card. ALso internet access is gone. I think that I may have picked up a flash file that trashed my system. I ran system restore and that didn't help. ALso current Trend Micro software didn't detect anything. Anybody hear of flash files with this capability? Any way to get rid of them, even if you don't know where to look? Thanks

start up install option keeps appearing

Hi At work, while away, someone plugged there mobile/PDA device into my PC (not a problem - hotdesking etc). However, every time I log in it comes up with, device not deteched etc etc. Is there away of stopping this, as I can't see a don't ask again box? I guess it must be set to auto start. Equally is there a way of getting any programme to auto start when opened? Anyway any help greatly appreciated Rexmann

I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4 processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space. The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME). A month ago, I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner. Recently, my "starter" yellow-ink cartridge ran out of ink, and one other cartridge is about to do the same. At the Best Buy store where I bought the printer, Brother cartridges are sold for $13.50 each. I believe that these are the LC51B, LC51Y, LC51C, and LC51M cartridges. I am trying to do an upgrade install of XP SP2 over 98SE. I need to do this for time concerns as the machine has far too much software to reload. If I boot to the CD, it tells me it can't find a previous version of Windows, so... I start 98 and then put in the CD. Setup asks 'what would you like to do' and I tell it to upgrade as it reccommends (would have chose that option anyhow). It would get to the end of 'analyzing machine' and stall... but then I would get the 'what would you like to do' screen again while set up is already running, errrr stalled! I have a desktop Compaq Presario PC running Windows XP Home with an 80GB Hard Drive I have reached the stage on my experience curve where I want to back-up my hard drive, I see lots of advice that this is a good idea. In preparation I have downloaded 'DriveImage XML' I plan to back up my 80GB drive (used space 30GB) onto my original 40GB hard drive which carries 2 partitions - the original working Windows partition (NTFS) and the original 'Recovery ' partition.(FAT32) Using the Disk Management feature in XP when I select to 'format' either of the partitions on the 'Old Drive' (and I am sure this is the one I want to Format), Disk Management tells me :- …

I had to reinstall my copy of XP we had to get the activation code over the phone no prob. Then I continued to install the updates again no prob until I rebooted, Then when the logon screen came up it said you need to activate your windows. Click OK message this is already activated press ok to exit. Back to the logon screen, repeated and no access. Can anyone help?

XP Stalling during boot screen

Just curious if anyone had any ideas. My XP service pack 2 is stalling every time I boot it up (the black screen with the XP logo and the progress bar below it). The progress bar just gets frozen and nothing else happens. The only way to get anything going is in safe mode, which still works fine. I have tried a couple of system restores (back 10 days or so) to no avail - the same problem persists. Any ideas.

I have 2 origonal copies of XP and have formated my PC and Laptop on more than 1 occation, now when i register validate XP it tells me I have validated too masny times with both copies! is there anyway I can validate these again????? When I use, file>send>shortcut to desktop option (in Internet explorer) , an icon does appear on the desktop but it doesn't have the blue "e" in it and when I try to use it, it just asks what program do I want to use. I noticed in Control panel, folder options, file types, that when I select different items, the info changes but it does NOT for HTM & HTML so maybe these 2 are corrupted ? How can I fix this ? I have just begun to experience a Microsoft Visual C++Runtime Error during two separate operations. When I try to open my internal “D” drive (RAID 0 - mostly video AVI files) in thumbnail view I get the message window: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library / Runtime Error! / Program: C:\Explorer.exe / R6025 / -pure virtual function call. When I close the window, explorer closes and I lose my desktop icons and taskbar briefly, but they return within about 30 seconds. If I open the “D” drive in list view, it does not occur. Running XP Pro at work. Domain Admins are able to access my Desktop. I can tell some users have accessed my machine from new directories in \documents and settings. I've removed some of those directories, but one of them tells me the file index.dat is in use, but I can't find that file in the Documents and Settings user subdirectory. What does this mean? How can I tell the last time a user has logged into my machine?

Some XP machines in our office are automatically shutting down while working, automatic update is set to manual. Scanned computers for any kinds of viruses as well as spy ware, still not able to find any problem. System will work normally after switching on, recurrence this problem, might be once in a week or twice a week etc, some machines twice a month.

I am having difficulty adding a few components to my computer. I have XP and had it up to SP3. I have cleaned things by unistalling and removing through Add/Remove. Included in this were all the updates along the way over the past five years. For example in trying to add fax service, it is asking for my CD of SP3. I don't have that, only the original CD. I am guessing that I may have deleted some important files in previous updates. Should I be going to Microsoft's website to reinstall updates that go all the way back? Should I reinstall SP3 or even go to SP2 and then SP3. Any thoughts

I have automatic updates set to check daily for updates and to download them automatically. I noticed in eventvwr that windows checks for updates every hour all day long - every day. Should it be doing that? I would have assumed it would check one time each day at the time specified.

I have no idea what is wrong with my computer. But it just keeps getting worse. I keep getting these adware or spyware or something? It's like Windows XP Virus Detector things that keep popping up. Now I got one that said Windows Vista, and I don't even have Vista. I think it got removed when I ran the Anti spyware program I have. The computer seems to be working better. Except now when I go to start menu, there's not options for programs, or run, or control panel or anything like that. Anyone know what is going on, or have any advice to fix it? :[

Removal of braviax.exe

I inadvertantly opened an email which has left me with an icon on the toolbar which constantly pops up telling me my computer is infected. Windows OneCare appears to have removed the infection (or tells me it has detected and removed it) but the icon is still there and I get constant pop-ups. The thing seems to be lodged as Braviax.exe in C;\windows\system32 and is 9kb. I've tried deleting it but it won't move. Has anyone any idea how I can get rid of the thing? It's in XP, by the way (not Vista). Allen -- Now enjoying Vista after 8 months of frustration!
