Copy Paste Issue with XP Pro
by Guest Greg- 0 replies
All the sudden I get this message when trying to right click and drag a file to a directory on our network: Do you want to move or copy files from this zone? And it has the words Internet Explorer in the upper left hand corner of the dialouge box. Typically when I right click and drag a file to a directory, it gives me the option to copy or cut and so forth...And this is only happening on network drives. It works normally on my local drive. Did I set something that is causing this now? I've rebooted the machine. I'm running XP Pro SP3. I installed SP3 a couple of weeks ago and didn't have this problem then. Just started today. Thanks, Greg

I have the antivirus xp 2008. One microsoft discussion group suggested that one easy way of getting rid of this monster is to go to system tools and create a new system restore point and then restore the system. I tried to do this but the only highlited system restore date for the month of august was today's day at a time after my computer became infected. Is it possible to set another resore point even though no other dates in august are highlited. This virus is reaking disaster on my computer. Thanks in advance/ Al -- al

Creating a boot CD
by Guest Lex- 16 replies

I want to create a boot CD for my PC with XP. It looks difficult, I'm not an IT wizard but am proficient with tinkering around and following instructions; I have read articles about how to do this and it looks like a) you can create a boot disc - floppy disc version - if you have a floppy drive. If you don't (I don't) you can buy an external floppy drive that links in via a USB. b) OR, you can go through the process of creating a CD which requires some skill. Other tasks linked to this are: Creating a copy of XP files with all your preferences saved including drivers etc...via Slipstreaming. ALso a bit scary and complex to me. I also think …

Is there a way to make the taskbar re-appear a bit quicker? Is there any way to adjust this speed? I do have it set in the Taskbar properties window, to auto-hide. I'd like to keep this function, just have it appear a bit quicker. -- Paul MS Office Pro 2003 XP Home Dell Inspiron 1501

Hi, I have recently reinstalled Windows XP Sp2 and all hotfixes and I figure out a strange behavior if I use shift+Insert and strg+delete which I use permanently for coping text. the behavior is that if i copy text into the clipboard by control+c (before i used ctrl+ins) and using then shift+ins to insert the text nothing happened - i need to press return twice and then it's working! it always like that! does anybody has an idea? thanks

I have a black screen that comes on when the computer is not used for about 15 mins. But it's not the screen saver. Someone I had worked with told me how to change it before, but I forgot how, and ever since my computer was reformatted or something, it comes back on all the time. It's very annoying when watching movies, Etc. Does anyone know what I am talking about or how to change it?

Control panel issue
by Guest Still learning- 1 reply

Ok...Dell tower, 512 megs, 1.7gzh processor..XP. I got some malware about 2 months ago...got Anti-spyware, and cleaned it up. But I've noticed since then I have *two* add/removes icons in the control panel. One looks normal, the other looks like a file looks when there is no association. But sometimes, even that icon will look normal, not often, but sometimes...and what's even weirder...is that both icons when clicked, will open up the add/remove program. I've noticed no other problems with the computer, and this is NOT really a problem for me, it's just that I know I'm not supposed to have two of them. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

This is during the point where the software tries to install this program. I tried to install on another computer and it worked fine. However, I need this on my main computer. Anybody have any insight as to what's going on and how I fix it? Thanks in advance! Sometime on another forumtold me to try the following which did not work. Can anyone help? Multiple Windows Installer (msiexec.exe)
by Guest Sean- 8 replies

I always seem to have two copies of msiexec.exe in memory and because of this cannot install ANYTHING onto my computer. Is there a way to determine exactly what the copies of msiexec.exe in memory are trying to install, that way maybe I can un/re install that product I've tried the "Windows Install Clean Up" utility but don not see how this can help as I do not know which product to clean? I think this problem is the reason why my page file is always at arung 90% full even when I am not running anything. Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp

Firewall question 1 2
by Guest Peter in New Zealand- 26 replies

For some years I have had a LAN with four computers at home, based on a DLink DSL504T modem/router also providing access to the Internet. With the kids all grown up and gone now-a-days I decided to simplify everything. My one remaining machine now connects to the Internet via a SmartAX ADSL2+ MT882 modem using the ethernet port. The old DLink had a hardware firewall built in, and I also ran a software firewall on each individual computer. My question is, now with a firewall also in the new modem, and no LAN any more, do I really need a software firewall on my single machine as well any more? I am running Windows XP SP3 with the Windows firewall enabled at pre…

File sort reversed in common dialog
by Guest Rich Pasco- 7 replies

For several days now, the list of files and folders is reversed in any application which uses a common dialog for File/Open and File/Save. That is, the files and folders beginning with "Z" are at the top of the list. I can correct it temporarily by right-clicking and choosing "sort by name" but the next time I invoke File/Open or File/Save it is backwards again. How can I fix it permanently? - Rich

I was trying to clear a boot.vbs virus and the instructions told me to go to the registry and delete data files from the winlogon folder. I did this then rebooted and when the machine got to the logon screen it does not recognise any accounts or passwords, they seem to have been deleted. How can i get into the system? it boots fine but i have no account details to get past the logon screen. Regards all,
