Yet another Shutdown Problem
by Guest KWS- 2 replies
Windows XP Media Edition When I perform start - turn off computer - turn off, the last panel with the turn off options disappears but the shutdown/turn off sequence does not start. I can then do it again and the sequence completes normally. Sometimes, it works the first time but usually I have to do it twice. This started recently and, unfortunately, I am not able to relate it to something else I did at the time, such as changing settings or installing new software. Any ideas as to where to look? Thanks Ken

upgrade RAM, now Windows will not boot, error message
by Guest Stephen Frog- 3 replies
I recently upgraded the memory on an older HP Pavilion from 192mb to 512mb (the maximum this computer will take). When I start the machine, I get a full page error message that starts with the sentence: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." Then farther down the page it suggests alternatives - safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, use last known good configuration or start windows normally. I've tried all of those but none work. I can get into the BIOS setup with F1 at the blue HP screen, but I don't know what I'm doing t…

Started getting the "WI could not be accessed" crap, with the occasional 1601 error (which I understand is the same error). I have done EVERY suggestion I have found here on the website, plus others from elsewhere, multiple times, but the damn thing still won't play nice. Now, it has starting running every time I reboot, although it doesn't seem to do anything. For a while, it was starting up when I would click-and-drag, launch other programs, etc. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE -- someone give me something new (hopefully other than reinstalling my entire computer... I just do not have the time to keep wasting on this BS.) Thanks.

by Guest Bob Stanek- 4 replies

Recently I notice that any new USB device I install (like flash drive, camera) is not automatically recognized by XP as it was in the past. Related is when I go to Control Panel, Scanners & Camera Wizard, Install new device: what happens on a good XP system is a list of all devices is shown, my window come up with "unable to find any drivers..." The drivers are all there, so something in the registry I guess is corrupted. Suggestions?

Dual Monitor Cable Question.
by Guest Richard K- 4 replies
I have a Windows XP Pro computer that has a dual monitor option video card. I can see this via the desktop/settings Display and I have 2 monitor options. This video card is equipped with a single VGA port. I bought a splitter to split into 2 monitors and then went into the settings to "extend" the desktop (via the checkbox) on the 2nd VGA. When I hit apply it does not save the checkbox settings and all I get is a same screen on both monitors and no extension. I know the video card supports dual monitors based on the settings section but is there something special in splitter cables where I need to make sure I have a specialized one that will do dual …

Listing Of Start Menu Programs?
by Guest John Schneider- 4 replies
I'm about to take the plunge and move to Vista. Before I do, I'd like to create a list of everything in my start menu. I realize it is a combination of items in my personal menu and the "all users" menu. I'm looking for some way to create a listing (preferably in a tree format) of all the programs I currently have installed. I've been poking around the web and don't see any tips for this. Any ideas? Thanks!

Double click stopped working on desktop
by Guest RatDuck- 5 replies
I've searched the forums for an answer with no luck so am posting my own question. Double click stopped working on my desktop icons and folders after encountering some script kiddies at play on a gaming forum (I use Firefox for a browser). I've ran a couple of different virus scans finding nothing. I re-installed mouse drivers. I attempted to do a restore with no luck. (It fails no matter which date I attempt to restore to) Short of formatting again, I have no clue what to do. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

How to move ntldr back to C drive
by Guest JP- 5 replies
On a recent reinstall of WinXP Pro SP2 on an elderly laptop we noticed that these files - ntldr, ntdetect and boot.ini - are now located not on the C (system) partition but on the D (data) partition! The HDD is sectioned into these two partitions. No problems with anything. System boots to C "drive" and everything works normally. And every application did install correctly on C. But now we need to format D partition and need to know how to move the system files to C such that the installation continues working fine. TIA for any advice on this matter. Regards. JP --

Sharing a Printer on a Wireless Network
by Guest Daave- 5 replies

I am at a neighbor's house right now. They recently received a Westell 7500 wireless modem/router, which seems to be configured correctly. Both PCs run Windows XP Home. The router is connected to the desktop PC (Compaq Presario 5000) and the laptop (Acer Aspire 3002 LCi) is now able to access Internet connectivity via its wireless card. They would like to be able to print to the HP JaserJet 1200 printer, which is connected to the desktop. How is this best accomplished? I tried running the Add-a-Printer wizard, but when I browse, I cannot find the network. I even tried with the Windows firewall turned off. I also tried using the Add-a-network-place wizard. Sel…
