My Toshiba Satellite Pro M70 laptop is running on Win XP SP3. When I checked Windows Update today, there was one high priority update listed - "Security Update for Microsoft Core Services Service Pack 2 (KB936181)", with the following info given on it : "A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed." The last sentence - "Once you have inst…

How can I delete a game?
by Guest Navyguy- 5 replies
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with SP2, XP and DSL connection and have Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy installed. I previously deleted it and had problems doing so because the Add/Remove program wouldn't delete it. I finally resolved the problem by using the free version of Smarty Uninstaller. Stupidly, I installed the game once again after some time had passed and I find myself in the same situation and can't delete it using the Add/Remove program and unfortunately I can't use Smarty Uninstaller because I've already used their free version and they won't allow me to use it a second time. Does anyone know of a similar program that I can use to remove this game? I …

XP Pro Upgrade
by Guest George- 5 replies

I just installed Windows XP Pro upgade on a Dell Inspiron B130. With about 19 minutes left in the installation, the following errors came up: bluhill.jp_ sunset.jp_ waterlil.jp_ winter.jp_ beethov9.wm_ newstrys.wm_ When these came up, I had the option to retry or cancel. If I retried, the problem would come back up again, so I elected to cancel. Now Internet Explorer isn't working properly. If I try to go home, another screen will try to open up and then locks up the computer. If I try to open a favorite, another screen will try to open and then locks up the computer. The only way I can close those screens is through the Task Master. It appear that I…

Recently we have had several instances of offline files being enabled automatically on random users desktop PC's. We have no idea how this is happening, but random users are reporting strange messages - and when I investigate I find that Offline Files are enabled. Does anyone know why offline files would be enabled automatically at random times for random users?

I keep getting an Application Error "The memory could not be "read
by Guest Yehoo911- 1 reply

When playing the game on ijji.com called Mahjong Blocks, I get an error at the end of every game I try to play. The error says: [Title] GMahjong: GMAHJONG.exe - Application Error [Message] The instruction at "0x5ad71531" referenced memory at "0x00000014". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program. It is then followed by another error saying the same thing only with numbers 0x43753a1a and 0x00000148 instead. Please help me. I've been trying to fix this problem for days! I've reinstalled and uninstalled everything dozens of times and the same thing keeps happening. Thanks in advance for your help.

Strange Monitor Problem
by Guest blueman- 4 replies
I just finished setting up and installing programs in a new PC running windows XP. Something must have happened and the monitor screen went black. If I try to hit "reset" I can nothing seems to happen. I think the computer shuts down and restarts but the screen remains black The only way I can get the monitor to work (if it is the monitor) is to unplug the PC (when the screen is blank) and plug it back in. Once I have a screen and shut down normally using the start menu, the next time I try to start it up I get nothing but a black screen. I can't even tell if the PC is booting up or getting past the cmos boot up as the screen is black. I have tried a different…

Dear Sirs, Yesterday, some thunderboomers and heavy duty lightning came thru early evening, and the juice kicked off and back on before I could get this rig shutdown, and it restarted her improperly, and the auto Chkdsk ran, but I didn't get to read what it offered me to do when it found errors, which it did, I got sidetracked with the aerial bombardment. On the root of my hard drive containing Windows XP, there is now a File Folder, named FOUND.000 It's 4.03 MB and holds 123 files, of Recovered File Fragments, named (FILE0000.CHK 24.0 KB, Yesterday, July 20, 2008, 8:41:18 PM to FILE0122.CHK 156 KB, Yesterday, July 20, 2008, 8:41:18 PM). Changing settings when logging on as Administrator?
by Guest Pheasant Plucker®- 0 replies
Hi there, When I initially setup 10 laptops I created a user called Admin that has full admin rights in addition to the individual user account and two extra Power Profiles to suit our Technicians way of working. This works well with the advantage that the user can't override the power settings that seem locked by default. So far so good... However when I took a look at some of the laptops the other day I logged on as Admin briefly and also as the default Administrator to check the password on both accounts. Upon logging off (and leaving site) I got a call from a couple of Techs who, after the machine comes out of standby now have to input their passw…

I currently run XP. When I click on my desktop icons to open a program, all that opens is the Properties Menu for the program. It doesn't matter if it is the browser on an application. I reboot the computer and then my programs are fine. But this happens several times a day, and just started yesterday. I did a complete anti-virus, spyware, registry check and did not find anything unusual. Any ideas what may be going on? -- jwalker

Hi All I am attempting to use the indexing service to index the emails that I have dragged and dropped into My Documents from Microsoft Outlook. I have read several sets of instructions on how to work the indexing service and the instructions say that files created in Microsoft Outlook can be indexed. I set it up and it starts scanning but then I can't get any search results when I query the catalog. I am pretty sure that I have checked all relevant boxes and changed the proper options and settings but I must be missing something because it's not doing it's job. I appreciate any help Thanks -- I have no idea what I''m doing

Automatic Updates
by Guest Patty- 10 replies

I had my Automatic Updates set to "Download updates, but let me decide when to install" and sometime today, an update came in. Since I was away from the computer, the update shield is now missing from the taskbar and when I choose "Turn off computer" it shows that it will install the downloaded updates when the system is turned off. Since I believe that this update is SP3 and I choose not to install it at this time, how can I tell Windows to skip this install, or how can I get the shield back in the taskbar so I can choose to not install it? It used to leave the shield in the taskbar until I made a choice, but now it appears to no longer do that. I know that I …

Failed Updates
by Guest gordo- 2 replies

I am sure this has been covered before, but I am using Outlook Express and I do not know how to search the archives. I have XP Pro installed with SP3 and plenty of memory, both disk and on board (2gb). I tried Microsoft Update and received the message that 11 updates failed to install, even after several tries. Is there a definitive fix to this problem? The updates apparently downloaded OK. Thanks, Gordo
