Power Options works intermittently
by Guest crandae- 1 reply

Power Options used to work acceptably well on my Gateway desktop. Now it will not automatically put my system into hibernation. I have disabled the Fax from waking the system when a call comes in. Hibernation is enabled. I have the Power Options set to hibernate the system after 2 hours. I use my wireless notebook in the evenings and need to have the desktop on then. I am somewhat handicapped and getting upstairs to turn the computer off is difficult. I was using the Power Options to conserve energy. Now, when I come upstairs in the morning, the monitor is off, but the drives are running and the system is not in standby or hibernation mode. The Power Option…

Norton 2009 upgrade & Zonealarm
by Guest AB- 15 replies

I received a notice that I'm eligible for a free upgrade to the 2009 version of Norton antivirus. After downloading it, the install couldn't continue until I remove ZoneAlarm. I'm not happy with Norton - It takes does things I don't want it to do, slows down the computer, etc. Will switch to a different antivirus when the contract is up, but have about 6 months to go on it. Questions - if I do remove ZoneAlarm, can I reinstall it after the Norton upgrade and have both apps work properly? I remember a previous issue such as this with these 2 apps. Is it really necessary to upgrade Norton? I'm running the 2008 version. Thanks for any advice on thi…

Im the only Admin, Im controlled by Group Policy?
by Guest Brian- 2 replies

Hi I am troubleshooting a problem Im having with my computer connecting to torrents. I suspect the culprit is Windows Firewall but I cannot shut it off. It says, "for your security some settings are controlled by group policy." I did not enact a group policy, I am the only person who uses this pc. I have the only user account minus the Guest login. I have XP Home edition. Is there a way to Uninstall the Firewall or maybe get rid of this "group policy?" I have already tried making exceptions for my programs but it doesn't work.

To the Microsoft support team, or anybody, I have a HP DV1000 laptop that I bought from Staples office supply. When I bought it had service pack 1 on it. Over the years it has updated and upgraded automatically. It recently upgrade to service pack 3. It has a 1.5 Gb processor, 100 Gb hardrive, and 1 Gb of ram memory. Recently, I found that I have only 23 Gb's of free space on the hardrive. I started cleaning my documents but barely made a dent in freeing up space. After studying everything on my hardrive I find that the windows folder has 44 Gb in the windows file. I look at a friends XP computer and the windows folder is only 4.2 Gb's in the windows f…

Hello to all, As I have four questions which are mentioned below: 1.) I'm using a batch file & it is in Startup folder. It runs every time when I log in. I'm using three commands in it. Every time its shows Ok mesage when a command is executed successfully, so I want to disable the "Ok" mesage, I have used "@ECHO OFF" after every command but it doesn't work. Commands are netsh firewall & netsh interface ip so when they are executed, Ok mesage is appeared, I want to disable the mesage or it should not be appeared. 2.)When we run a batch file, blank window appears, I want that window to be minimized automatically and it runs in very small wind…

by Guest frank- 1 reply

Hello: I have created one internet shortcut in favorites folder that belongs to all users folder. I have assigned the correct permissions in order all users can see and use it. When I login as a user I am not able to see this shortcut. I only see the user own favorites. I would like that every user would have their own favorites and can access to all users favorites. Is possible to point to several folders in Favorites key in Shell Folder section in registry? Than you in advance. Frank.

XP "Transfer my files and settings wizard"
by Guest RJK- 2 replies
Is there any way to run it, so that it only gathers up stuff from the "old" PC's boot drive ...i.e. drive C:\ ....the last time I used it, it trawled its' way through all the hard disks it could find in the machine e.g. D:\ and E:\ ....I've got a massive directory structure on drive E:\ with almost my whole life in it ! - which does not need to be crawled through by XP's "Transfer my files and settings" wizard. So is there any way, bar disconnecting all other hd's, to run the wizard so that it will ignore other hard disks in the same machine as the boot-drive ? TIA regards, Richard

Program Will Not Run Unless The "Run As" is Used
by Guest Zoey- 2 replies

Hi All, I have an end user who has WindowsXP Pro SP3. He purchased a document camera, "AverMedia CP150 model". He installed the software while logged on as the local Administrator account. The program will not run, unless you right click on the program icons executable and then choose the "Run As" and choose the local Administrator account. I've checked to make sure the program was added to the Firewall Exception list (it was by default anyway). I want him to be able to open this program while he is logged on as himself to the domain. When he logs onto the domain, even though he is an administrator, he still has to do the "run as" function to get th…

"Windows cannot open this file"
by Guest Jo-Anne- 3 replies

Today I downloaded from the Corel website a WordPerfect patch for my Windows XP SP3 computers (two of them). When I tried to install the patch, I received the following Windows error message on both computers: "Windows cannot open this file. To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it..." I checkmarked the option that Windows use the Web service to find the appropriate program, but it said it couldn't find one. The file is WPOX3_SP2_HotPatch4_EN.msp. The type is Claris.MainDictionary, 5.44 MB. I asked at the WPX3 newsgroup and was told I shouldn't have a problem installing this patch. Any idea of what program I should have to open …

Hello, GMT time is different all over the world. While UTC should be the same all over the world. So if windows could switch back and forth to UTC then that might be handy for people on the internet on different continents/countries/states etc to agree on a same time for meeting up or so ! ;) Bye, Skybuck.

I have a home network with two computers connected with a netgear switch. This morning one of the two could not connect to the internet. I first tried switching the cable locations on the switch which did nothing. Then I connected the internet cable directly into the computer. I still cannot get it to connect. In uninstalled the internet card's drivers and restarted the computer. Still nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Backup "insert the following media"
by Guest Dorci- 0 replies

Using Windows XP Pro Backup: I have "My Documents" scheduled to backup to a network drive daily at lunch time. Sometimes when I return from lunch, the backup is waiting for a response to "insert the following media", however there is nothing to insert; the system is already connected to the network. I simply click OK, and it runs. Why can't it sometimes connect? I am hard-wired to the network using a laptop in a docking station. Thanks in advance, Dorci

Hi, I use Skype and MSN Messenger for chat, and I use Windows Desktop Search (WDS) version 4 for searching. I've noticed that WDS searches MSN Messenger chat history by default, but it does not search Skype chat history. Is it possible to have WDS search my Skype chat history too? A plug-in perhaps? A neighbor is having a strange problem with his PC as described below: "My computer is a Dell Dimension DIM 3000, with an Intel Pentium processor @2.80 GHz & w/ 2 GB RAM The Operating System is Windows XP, SP3 Windows "Defender" and AVG Anti virus have been active for a long time. Over time, my computer began taking longer and longer to boot up & to load any programs. It then began rather frequently locking up to the point that it would not shut down normally, and the only way to get re-started was to unplug the computer, then re-start. After re-booting, it would run as above for a while, then freeze up again. CCleaner, Spybot, UWClean, and PC Pit…

Hi, When Windows got damaged due to: - disk / file corruption - malware or it's removal - bad driver(s) - update flaw(s) - other causes it is always had to tell when to decide that after some hours of reparing, a complete re-install is the better option. Can you advice (MS / 3rd party) tools that provide a quick (partial / overall) Windows sanity check? Tools that check essential Windows structures. Kind regards, John7

easiest way to achieve the BSOD upon reboot?
by Guest sobriquet- 2 replies

Hi. Using a screen recorder and virtualization software, I'm making a video tutorial demonstrating the virtues of running a virtual machine and for this purpose I intentionally want to mess up an xp installation to demonstrate how easy it is to recover from a disastrous situation (like a Blue Screen Of Death when you reboot) by reverting to a snapshot prepared in advance. One method to achieve this, is to go to C:\windows\system32 (assuming windows is installed in C:\windows), and simply delete as many files as you can in that location. The problem with this method, is that many files are locked by the system, so the deletion process aborts every time it enco…

XP updates - where are they ?
by Guest RJK- 2 replies

Earlier today, whilst AVG did an update, XP's automatic update "Gold Shield" appeared briefly in my system tray, and obviously downloaded something because when I go to Shut Down, there are options to Shut Down with, or without, installing the Windows updates ! ...and the "gold shield" has disappeared from system tray. Just out of curiosity where are the XP updates, and how would one find them to signal XP to install them - i.e. what determines when the "gold shield" appears in system tray ? ...I guess that, if I shut down without installing them on the way out form this session, the Gold Shield will appear during my next Windows session. ? rega…
