Update on desktop problem
by Guest Gerald Ross- 3 replies
A couple of months ago I asked for help getting my notebook back to where a program's icon remained highlighted when the program was closed. Never got any help. About a week ago it started working right again, just like my other three computers. It had always worked that way and I like it. No idea what brought it back to it's senses. -- Gerald Ross Cochran, GA A cynic's work is never done.

Firewall and AV won't start
by Guest DustyB- 3 replies

G'day all; I'm running XP Media Center version 2002, w/SP3 v.3311. Up until the last few days, it was on auto-update, running along smoothly on my HP Pavilion, M7680N, as it has for years... The problem I'm having started a few weeks ago with Outlook; in that every time I fired it up, it would come up in that stupid 'non-"Show Full Menus" mode'. I always have full-menus set, and didn't change from that in any way that I can think of. During some back-&-forth with MVP's in the Outlook forum, it was finally suggested that my registry hive must have become corrupted, and it was suggested that I run: UPHClean. Did that. Didn't help any more than…

Hello, When the item is selected I need to enable cmdDelete btn. and if there is not item selected cmdDelete btn must be disabled. The problem with the code I use (see below) is that when user change the selected item (or when user select item for the first time) the code below does not "see" selected item with the first mouse click. Private Sub lvSelLines_MouseDown(Button As Integer, Shift As Integer, x As Single, y As Single) For i = lvSelLines.ListItems.Count To 1 Step -1 If lvSelLines.ListItems(i).Selected = True Then cmdDelete.Enabled = True Exit Sub End If Next cmdDelete.Enabled = False End Sub…

XP locks up at splash screen
by Guest Bob Henson- 0 replies
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I've only just joined this group. I have a problem on two different PCs running XP home with the latest patches and updates, but with quite different specifications and different software in daily use, by and large. On boot-up, XP runs as far as the splash screen. The progress indicator runs for a while and then XP locks up. The only thing that will clear it is turning off the power and re-starting. The machines then show the page offering to start from safe mode etc. - if I select start in normal mode, the machine takes the last good configuration and starts just fine. I've done this countless times, and…

My Documents - appears 3 times -which does System Restore not restore?
by Guest xylophone- 4 replies
I understand System Restore will not restore/protect files in My Documents, such as doc. files, meaning that on a restore such files will not be affected and I need not worry. My actual worry is to know which of the 3 My Documents folders I have in Explorer System Restore does not restore. These three are clones of each other in that they contain exactly the same folders. Going down from Desktop, The first is Desktop\My Computer\Local Disk\Documents and Settings\my name\My Documents - the second is Desktop\My Computer\my name (is called my name and not My Documents, but has the same contents as the two so-called My Documents, so I refer to it here as t…

Uninstall Nortel VPN Client
by Guest Michael Gerbasio- 2 replies
Hi, I'm running WinXP SP3 and trying to remove a VPN client I no longer need, Nortel Networks Extranet. This program doesn't show up in Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs list. I've been searching on the net for hours but can't find out how to delete this program. It is still installed and the folder is in C:\Program Files\Nortel Networks, it just isn't in the Add/Remove program list. Any ideas? TIA. Regards-Michael G.

Failing to save settings
by Guest victoriaaa- 1 reply
I am using Windows XP Home Edition. Recently, I do not seem to be able to save my settings anymore. I have noticed that in several areas: - Folder view settings: I can't apply permanent view settings to folders anymore, the view changes back to the (wrong) default for whatever it had been before. I can't specifiy the folder type anymore (music/pictures/documents...) and can't choose a picture to display on the thumbnail version either. - Favourites: In my favourites menu, I can't sort the favourite by names anymore, parts of them get collapsed, and if I drag and drop a folder to another location, this step has been reverted when I check back. - D…

My icons are not displayed properly in my DVD-RW optical drive
by Guest Martin Healy- 1 reply
I have noticed recently that my files and folders are displayed incorrectly in my optical DVD/CD drive. My files and folders are now displayed as web icons or internet explorer icons eventhough I have no web pages on this storage device. This is very annoying. I have tried viewing the files under various formats and thumbnails is the closest it gets to displaying the icons properly. When I remove the CD/DVD disc and view the contents of the disc on another computer, the files are displayed correctly. Please note my icons are displayed correctly on all other drives on my windows xp computer except for my CD/DVD D: optical drive. This is so bizarre. Shou…

Applications dont work from USB harddisk
by Guest Aristide de la Tanne- 3 replies

On an external USB disk with 500 GB and FAT32, I have some applications that can run without installation, e.g. Media Player Classic. When I attach the disk to my laptop (with XP on NTFS), MPC runs fine. When I attach it to my desktop PC (XP on NTFS as well), MPC does not run, access to the USB disk "hangs", its LED turns red. On the3 other hand, a copy of MPC on the internal HDD works perfectly. What might be the problem with USB? Regards, Aristide

Poer surge on Hub Port
by Guest GKW in GA- 5 replies

I recently purchased a portable external hard drive. It's a USB powered drive. When I plug it into my laptop and try to copy something to it, I get a dialogue box that says "Power Surge On Hub Port, A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of it's hub port. You should disconnect the device" What causes this? I don't think there is anything wrong with the drive because this is the 2nd one of these that I have had this happen with. I though about switching to a portable external hard drive by another manufacturer

Ok guru's, explain this head scratcher! Outlook Express. Been having a problem for the last 2 weeks so I removed my CAT 5 RCA cable modem cable and put in the old USB cable and now I can recieve and send mail!! The CAT 5 cable works on my laptop and I can recieve and send mail on it. In the device manager, I have a exclaimation mark on the "Packet scheduler miniport #4 and also on the "RCA USB Cable modem-Packet Scheduler miniport". When I try to uninstall these it says "Unable to remove- These might be required to boot computer". Outlook Express forum MVP guy said to post here.
