Desktop Shortcuts are Re-arranged
by Guest pwrichcreek- 5 replies
I have my desktop shortcuts arranged into what I consider logical groupings. Occasionally many of the shortcuts get moved around, disturbing my groupings (and me as well). I think this happens when an application adds a shortcut to the desktop programmatically -- as opposed to my adding a new shortcut manually. Is there a desktop property that I can tweak to keep this from happening? TIA, Phil

Network Share Help

Ok, first off I hope this is the right place to post this, if not I am sorry. I have a Windows XP machine on the domain because I need to add a specific group in order to access our share. My question is how can I make it so when I go to a users machine and try to access this share, to force for credentials rather then using the users cached credentials and receive an access denied message. I do know if I put the machine in a workgroup it will work, but like I said I need a specific domain group to be added so it has to be on the domain. As of right now we have the everyone group in the permissions in order to access this share. We do not want this, as …

.msp files
by Guest Dolce- 4 replies

I just ran a scan using WinDirStat and found that my windows\installer is holding 7.4 gigs of hard drive space. 62 of the files all have different names but occupy the same amount of space (16.1 MB), were created at exactly the same time and have the same "last accessed" date/time. The same is true for the following: 51 files (11.3 MB) same creation date; 38 (11.3 MB) same creation date; 52 (11.3) same date; 8 (11 MB) same date and on and on for hundreds of files. Some of the files are blue, what does that mean? Can I delete any of these to make space on my hard drive? My c drive is 12 gigs and only holds my os and some software...all music/picture f…

Defrag Report
by Guest Uttam- 1 reply

Hi, I have Windows XP professional SP2 on my Dell D510 laptop and I often use the provided defargment to defrag my hard disk. After defragmentation, it shows a report with a list of files that are still fragmented and the number of fragments. It shows some ridiculous numbers as follows: Fragments File Size File Name ------------- ---------- ------------ 326 24 KB ntuser.dat.log 263 8 KB system.LOG .. .. .. How can a 24KB file have 325 fragments? How can an 8KB file have 263 fragments? I have a screenshot of the report but there is no…

'Windows 16 Subsystem' error etc.
by Guest spamlet- 3 replies

Situation is as follows: XPPro SP2 40 gig hard drive been running nearly full for several months before I could get around to offloading pictures. At one point, when I used fast user switching to access a second profile while the first was still running, I got a message something like 'can't find profile' and then the system started to build a new one before I could stop it with the result that the Outlook.pst for that side was lost. (thank heavens for Google desktop!). I assumed this must be a glitch related to the too full drive, but, now I have external drives for my pics and have been moving them and creating space. Last night I completed…

Destop Properties very slow
by Guest TDM- 10 replies

When I right mouse on the desktop and select "Properties", it takes over 3 minutes for the Display Properties to appear. It is not a right mouse context issue, as the same thing happens when I run "control desk.cpl" from a shell, and also when I execute "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,3" from a shell as well. Once the display properites appear, selecting another tab takes several minutes to switch as well. I am a bit stumped on this one. It would appear to be an issue witn rundll32.exe, but I have not found anything in google that is useful. Other than this one issue, the system appears to be running at expected performance and there are no v…

Hi! Is anyone else here using old KPF v2.1.5, Windows XP SP2, and with this KB951748? If so, then are you seeing any problems like Windows Explorer crashing randomly (e.g., ntdll.dll) when using Windows Explorer? I uninstalled this KB update and restarted explorer.exe (it crashed actually and I needed to reboot PC), but no crashes now so far. Hmm! Roaming Profile not updating
by Guest Jordan- 1 reply
I have been setting up and configuring Roaming Profiles for the past couple of months for all my users. All has been going well so far. Now I am enabling my own and for some reason, it won't replicate to the server. I first thougtht it might be a space issue because my Outlook.ost is huge, but I removed it from my local settings (which don't replicate anyway) and it still did not even create a single file on the server where my profile should be. This share is the same share every other profile is using and security is the same. Since I am a Domain Admin security should not be an issue. I then though I would see if I could at least download a profi…

printers and drives through Remote Desktop
by Guest SP_1- 1 reply

Hi I'm on a Vista Home Premium PC - connecting to an XP Pro PC through Remote Desktop Connection. While on the remote session, I open the My Computer (on the XP PC), and I can see all the drives on that PC plus all the drives on my Vista PC. I can copy files between these 2 PCs. The same thing with printers, while on the remote session, I open Printers And Faxes on the XP PC, and I can see all the printers on that PC plus the printers on my PC. Now, also from my Vista PC, I'm connecting to a different XP Pro PC. The problem is that I do not see all the drives of both PCs in the My Computer (eventhough I already checked the Drives box for connecting…

DVD Not Seen Via My Computer in DVD drive
by Guest dobe1776@yahoo.com- 3 replies
I have a Compaq Presario c300 using Windows XP. I can see the DVD drive in BIOS and Device Manager. However, when I place a DVD movie or software CD in the drive, the Autoplay does not turn on, nor can I see the DVD/CD files, or play the movie via My Computer. It simply prompts me to either format or eject the DVD/CCD. When I access the DVD drive directly through Media Player or HP's Video Software, it does see the movie and will play it. Any suggestions on how to make the DVD drive see the CD/DVD that is inserted into it via My Computer or to have it automatically detected? Thank you for your time.

Hi, I have a major problem and am wondering if anyone can help inform me on any of these things. Thank you very much in advance!! I have Windows XP the home version, on a Gateway desktop computer, probably at least 6 or 7 years old. For a few weeks or more, it was acting up and would start to shut down on me suddenly, then say that it "recovered from a serious error." Then Windows stopped starting up completely, and I started to get this message instead when I turned on my computer: winlogon.exe "This application has failed to start because ODBC32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." Then if you close that window, I even…
