Suddenly no free space.
by Guest Lyn- 10 replies
This is a WIN98 question but I suppose it could apply to XP. My friend has an old WIN98 computer that his wife uses only for her Email. The active partition is 6GB and has alwaws been about 2GB used. Suddenly it reports that it has only a few MB free, the drive is almost full. I got him to delete and recreate the windows managed swap file, and he only has the default recycle bin which is empty. He searched the hard drive for any unknown large files and found none. Any suggestions please, Lyn.

Hi. In the past, Windows had third party replacements like LiteStep. Are there any good ones to try for XP Pro. SP3 without any incompatibility problems. Desktop Icons
by Guest JonW52- 3 replies
I have created a series of custom icons that I am using for shortcuts on my desktop. When I use several of them to open their corresponding application, the picture on the icon changes to some other image when I close the program. I have tried a number of different things to restore the image which seems to work only until I open the application again. The results when I close the applications is always the same. This problem does not seem to affect all of my custom icons, only some of them. Is there some way to 'lock' the icon so that my custom image remains? I have tried saving the desktop as a custom theme and this does not help fix the problem. I su…

adaptec ASPI layer
by Guest Jones- 1 reply
i have an older PIII, where' I've installed the Adaptec ASPI layer at windows install (necessary for advanced audio software). normally, not a problem, but nuked the soft-shutdown of the computer (windows turns off the computer), simply going thru it's shutdown to the message "it is now safe to turn off your computer". so, normally, i manually switch it off. no problem there, really. but recently, after updating windows, my computer gets to the "saving your settings" screen and hangs there. I can manually turn it off at that point. any way of trouble-shooting a system hang up like that? thanks.

3.5" 7,200RPM vs 2.5" 7,200RPM
by Guest cashcream55@googlemail.com- 1 reply
- 124 views
I'm considering using a 2.5" 7,200RPM as a primary C: drive for the OS + applications, would it run as fast as a 3.5" 7,2000RPM? i.e. latency and throughput. I'm aware it's more expensive per GB but that doesn't affect since it's only for the OS installation and not for massive storage space. Would I be correct it that it would use less power and generate less heat also?

Logical/Physical disk drives
by Guest Alain Dekker- 2 replies

Logical disks: Does it help to partition your 40 Gb C:\ into two 20 Gb partitions (C:\ and D:\)? If I had an application that only wrote to D:\ (and lets say, for arguments sake, that the app writes frequently to disk), would the partition help reduce the likelihood of OS corruption? Would it reduce disk fragmentation? Physical disks: On a related note, does having two physical drives help with the above? Presumably with file fragmentation it would, but what about helping with OS corruption? Thanks, Alain

Event Log Not Saving on Local Machine After Use Over Network
by Guest jregan5- 1 reply
We have 4 computers networked together and must perform weekly audits on them. Typically we use the event viewer to review the events, then clear the event log and save it to a file. Recently we've started doing this task for all 4 machines over the network from a single computer. What's happening, however, is that after clearing the log on the local machine, the file isn't saved - we're asked to save, but the file seems to disappear. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I want to install the latest version of Ad-Aware. The install program wants to uninstall the previous version first, but it can't because up comes a message that says: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing WISDED53BPBB67C4244AE6ADSFD3C28D1EF_7_C in the box below. This box contains " c:\Program Files\Common Files\Wise Installation Wizard ....." I checked that path and the file is there. I tried deleting AD-Aware using control panel's ADD or Renove. Same result. I found the file on another PC and copied it over. (I know it was the s…

Folders: Filmstrip view not always available
by Guest Keith Stonefield- 1 reply
On certain folders on both my hard drives, the Filmstrip view is not available in My Pictures. I checked the Windows Help and Support and it said to choose "Show common tasks in folders" under Tools > Folder Options > General tab. However, that option is already chosen. It's weird because every once in a while, the Filmstrip view does not appear whereas all other times it does. Thanks for any help!

Router vs software firewall
by Guest Spiral- 8 replies
Using a secure wireless router as my gateway, why would I need to use a second software firewall, regardless of brand? I browse to port-attacking sites and they can't even see me on the net, let alone show a vulnerable port. Is there a further benefit from adding a software firewall in this case? All comments appreciated.

C:\WINDOWS\services.exe
by Guest JonnyTwoShoes- 1 reply

Hi there, I recently removed a Worm/Trojan but now everytime windows starts up it say's,"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\services.exe'.". I believe this file was associated with the threat which was removed and is now no longer there but the registry key still remains. Before I delete the wrong registry key I would like to know if the following registry key is legit, 'HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/C:\WINDOWS\services.exe' - Microsoft Windows Update Client. Is this really the Windows update client reg key which I do not want to delete or the suspected key which is trying to locate and run the threat ..exe? My knowledge of reg…

XP SP2 Task bar has shrunk vertically
by Guest Bob S- 4 replies
I cannot see all of my Task bar. I can see just the top of it at the very bottom of my screen. Last night it was doing that, but if I right clicked the top of it, I got a double arrow with which I could make it taller so I could see it at the bottom of my screen. Now I can get the double arrow, but it does not make it larger so I can see it. I thought it might be a problem with the vertical position or height of my monitor. So, I adjusted the monitor and found that if I moved it up, I still got just the top 1/16' of the task bar. Can anyone help me find my task bar? Thanks in advance. Bob

Deleting downloaded automatic updates
by Guest Dan- 3 replies

I have Automatic Updates set to automatically download but not install until I want to. However, one got dowloaded that I don't want to install. Now every time I shut down XP says there is an update ready to be installed. Can I get rid of that downloaded automatic update? I know you can hide an update from even downloading, but unfortunately I'm past that step. Thanks. Dan

Desktop Anomaly
by Guest gecko- 2 replies

On my desktop, in the top left of center a little, I have two items that look to be grey'ed-out icons. The labels underneath the icons are 'Reply' and 'Ctrl+R. Double clicking on them does nothing. Right clicking on them produces the same window that I get when I right click an unused area of the desktop. So I guess they are not icons. It's almost as if they are burned into the screen, but I sure hope not. If I open a full-screen window which covers that area of the screen, they show through that window. Am I in deep S? -GECKO
