icon preview problem in Windows XP
by Guest Millie- 2 replies

Hi I have an odd problem with Windows XP / windows explorer. When I transfer images from my digital camera to my pc the thumbnails are fine. Sometimes when I transfer the next batch of photos, the thumbnails for the previous photos are still there and the new thumbnails are not. To explain further, if I had a picture of a pair of boots, deleted it and captured a picture of my car, the thumbnail would show the pair of boots and not my car. When I open the thumbnail of the boots, it is in fact the car photo. It is VERY confusing! Can anyone help please? -- Millie

Dual Monitor - Same Screen Problem
by Guest Richard K- 1 reply
I have set up a computer using a video card that supports dual monitors. I can see that because when I go into Display settings I can see both 1 and 2 and can select either. What I am getting is not a true dual monitor but the same screen on both monitor 1 and 2. I tried going to monitor 2 in the display settings and hit the check box for "extending" but when I apply or save it ignores the check. When I try and change the resolution it also ignores my changes. Is there anything I can be pointed to that helps me configure these monitors and how to get dual monitors working? (display settings, resolutions, which boxes to check in the settings) I'm ne…

I have two desktops running Windows XP on our home LAN and a laptop running Windows XP connected to our WLAN. I have mapped a network drive on the laptop to my NAS, where most of our media files are stored. When connected, everything works fine. However, after a reboot the network drive does not reconnect automatically. I have to open My Computer and then double-click on the disconnected network drive and then everything works fine again. It seems like it is a boot-up timing-issue. Windows is trying to mount network drive immediately on boot up even before my wireless connection is fully established. Is there something I can do to delay the mountin…

I am getting the message "windows has encountered a problem, what would you like windows to do" when I try to copy photos to a cd or dvd. The cd and dvd's are new and empty. I tried opening the cd window and copying and pasting. I tried opening the photo and clicking send to. I tried just one photo at a time. What is happening here? Thank you. wallpaper disappears timed out
by Guest Kelly- 0 replies

I am working on xp pro sp2 in a domain environment. When I walk away from my desk I usually lock my computer by using windows key+L. When I come back and log back in, my wallpaper is gone and my screen is now a plain color. I have to manually go into display properties and click a different wallpaper then the one I want again to get it back. I am only selecting a wallpaper that comes with windows xp. I have not downloaded any special pics. This sometimes happens when my computer times out on its own and goes to the screen saver, but that is not as consistant as when I lock the pc. Any clues why this is happening??

Security question on updating from MS Update after clean install
by Guest Eran Karu- 6 replies
I have a product recovery CD-ROM of Windows XP home edition but is without any service pack. I plan to make clean install but wonder whether any malware would attack my computer while updating from Microsoft update, because clean installed Windows XP has lots of security holes. And I don't know whether built-in MS firewall is good enough. I cannot install Comodo Firewall Pro 3 because it requires service pack 2. So the question is: What is the safest way to update my clean installed Windows? Please give clear simple step by step instruction. -- Thanks, Eran Karu

How to reset a bad sector on an NTFS volume?
by Guest Bruce.- 9 replies
XP SP3. I had a hard drive with a few bad sectors. It never got worse so I ignored them. Chksdsk /r /f marked them as bad and that was that. Recently I did a major upgrade of my hardware. New motherboard, new drives, just about everything except the chassis. When I did the upgrade, I used True Image to clone the old PATA IDE hard drive to the new SATA drive. Because I did an exact partition copy from the old drive to new, those same sectors are still marked as bad, but no longer need to be. I've done a lot of googling but can find no way or utility to reset bad sectors on an NTFS volume. I know doing an chkdsk /r /f again does not do it. It…

by Guest Jock McGillicuddy- 0 replies

Hi All, I have a large collection of DivX files which when displayed in Explorer do not show any details in the "Duration" column. Similarly, no thumbnails seem to be available for DIvX files. Is there a fix for this problem? Similarly it seems to be the same for FLV files - all others display perfectly well i.e. mpg, avi, wmv. Thanks for any help. Jock

Hello: I eliminted a virus on my laptop today that said the following: “Some dangerous trojan horses detected in your system. Microsoft Windows XP files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of important files in C:\WINDOWS. Download protection software now!” I eliminated the virus by downloading and installing FixIEDef.exe from the following URL and it worked perfectly: http://untamedmind.wordpress.com/2008/07/09/how-to-fix-the-%E2%80%9Cattention-some-dangerous-trojan-horses-detected%E2%80%9D-virus/ I have no issues on my laptop. Allow client to view screen when a remote desktop is connected
by Guest Karl Rhodes- 4 replies
Hi all, this is something I've assumed is the case but never had it confirmed. Would I be right in thinking that there is no way for a user who is sat at their pc to view the goings on on-screen while an administrator, or another user for that matter, is connected to the pc via remote desktop? If there is some way of doing this without a third party application, then I'd be really grateful is someone could let me know how it's done. Alternatively, if there is a third party plugin that's free or relatively cheap, then I'd appreciate links to these too. Thanks, Karl

PGM message not directly sent by XP
by Guest Rob- 0 replies
Hi, I'm using PGM to send multicast messages in my application. However it turns out that the first message is not actually put on the wire immediately, but only if the application sends a 2nd message. Then with the sniffer I see them both. So for now I have patched my application to do just this: send the original message, and then a message with just 1 byte. But I wonder why this should be necessary anyhow. It just adds to the networkload, protocol stack load, and the receivers must ignore the spurious messages. So is this a bug in the MS PGM implementation, or correct PGM behaviour? Rob BTW, and for those XP Embedded aficionados: It is not sufficie…

Re cookie settings altering on own – it was a Malware Trojan
by Guest Andrew- 2 replies

I have found and destroyed the culprit responsible for resetting my cookies to the lowest possible level. It was a malware Trojan called Win32.Trojan.Monder – five infections in total. I downloaded and installed free Ad-Aware 2008 which discovered two Trojans in the registry first, the other three about 2 minutes later. Cookie settings stable again now, however, still can’t update my eTrust Antivirus vet engine to the latest issue! This is the first time Spybot S & D has failed to root out an infection! - Andrew

Playing PAL on NTSC PCs?
by Guest Snapper- 7 replies
Hopefully this is the right newsgroup. I don't know if computers in America are specifically NTSC based but here in Australia we can play any format of video. However, we've been posting videos of our granddaughter on our website for relations in the US to look at. But they're telling us that they can't view them. The only thing that I can put it down to is that their computers are NTSC or something, while these videos are in PAL format. Thing is, I have the same software that they would be using, including Windows XP, Apple Quicktime (the files are 3GP format), etc.. Could someone advise me how we can get these videos to play for these people? If indeed, …

Odd registry key?
by Guest Throttlehog- 3 replies

To preface: For several months now I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to ferret out a solution to a DVDRW problem using the online support pages of my pc manufacturer (HP), the hardware manufacturer (Lite-On), as well as those of all cd burning software currently installed. The latest steps I've taken involved deleting the upper and lower filters keys for the DVDRW, which failed to "fix" it. Which brings me to my question: While "poking" around in regedit I found an entry related to the DVD that looked a bit odd to me & I could think of no better place to get an accurate explanation than here. This is what I found: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ S…

While trying to upgrade from Kaspersky 6 to 9 I received the following message- Error 1606 could not access network location @:systemroot%\system32 When I tried to remove the Kaspersky 6 the same error massage displayed. I can't find this particular type of 1606 error in the Microsoft database. I have run four different registry cleaners without success. Is this a Registry problem? I have looked in the Registry (very scary) and there are a mass of Kaspersky keys in there. -- Charles
