Lost Administrator Privileges !!!
by Guest Bill- 4 replies

Windows XP Media Center service pack 2 system. Somehow or other I'm locked out of Control Panel and all it's functions. I have no idea how this happened and wonder if I can restore this very important feature. No matter how I log on, none of my logon names can address these features. When openingExplorer, and double clicking Windows\system32\control.exe, it brings up the same window declaring "This operation has been cacelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" Frustrating....... Anyone with the knowledge to hack what ever is necessary to clear these restrictions would be greatly appreciated. I am …

Taskbar Jumps
by Guest pjg- 1 reply

This is the second pc running windows xp professional I've come across where any minimized windows in the task bar flicker or jump and can't be maximized. Also, the expansion arrow for system tray icons continuosly jumps left and right or up and down depending on horizontal or verticle placement of the task bar. Only thing that seems to temporarily fix this is to reboot the pc rebooting. Any ideas on the cause? One was a brand new pc and the other was an older tablet pc. Both computers were clean of malware. Any ideas on the cause? pjg

Reinstall of WinXP fails @ 60% (copying files)
by Guest E-Double- 3 replies

After replacing a SATA hard drive in a machine and during the reinstall process for WinXP, the install process fails at around 59-60% every time with a general blue screen error that says something to the effect of: 'Error copying file, press R to retry or ESC to ignore or F3 to exit.' Its always a different file name or names (if pressing ESC), but always happens around 59-60% of the copy file process. The WinXP install process will recognize the hard disk and even format it okay, but for some reason it fails to completely reinstall Windows XP. We have even tried different SATA drives and different CD & DVD drives for the install disk, as well as t…

Small network question
by Guest Sal- 1 reply

I recently networked two computers together as a workgroup through a wireless router using the network setup wizard. Both computers are running XP-SP3. Everything seems to work fine, but in My Network Places on one computer it shows both computers as a Local Network, and on the other computer one is on the Local Network and the other is under the label "The Internet". As I said, everything seems to be working fine now, but will this cause problems in the future? I'm curious about this. Why aren't they under Local Network on both computers?

Service Pack 3
by Guest Bob Holiday- 3 replies
I'm using XP Home. I recently installed Service Pack 3. Now, when my computer starts, it gets to a certain point and then reboots--thus I can't get it to start at all, except in Safe Mode. I installed a Microsoft-supplied patch for this problem, but it didn't help. I've called Microsoft tech support, and that didn't help. The only way I can get my computer to start is to uninstall Service Pack 3 first. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can install Service Pack 3 without this problem? Thanks!

by Guest Bob Taylor- 1 reply

Two problems with XP SP3 I started with Win XP 32bit sp2 everything running fine, installed sp3 and ran into two problems: First - windows explorer was very slow in displaying file names - this occurred in explorer itself, but also in any file dialog. This problem has cleared up - I am not sure which of the various things did it - I changed the display options, but have set them all back - I increased the page space from the system managed, installed net framework 2.00. In any case, the problem seems to have completely gone away and everything is running fine except: Second problem - Quickbooks 2003 AND 2005 (the only versions I have tried) BO…

I'm trying to write a vbs to run vncviewer on a relative path. The following code works, except when the path has spaces: Dim LaunchDir, FSO, WSHShell Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") LaunchDir = FSO.GetFolder(".") wSHShell.Run LaunchDir & "\vncviewer.exe -notoolbar -autoscaling myhost.dyndns.org" Where's the error? Any help would be appreciated.

Everything Hangs When Accessing Tracking.log in System Volume Information Folder
by Guest Charles Law- 0 replies

I have Googled extensively for help on this, but although there are many, many reports of this problem, none of the solutions work for me, and no one has offered an explanation for the problem. All was well with my recently re-installed Windows XP SP3 set-up. I used Acronis Disk Director 10 to move some partitions around and resize them. Later, when I rebooted, all seemed fine, but when I started Disk Director again it hung on one drive. I left it for a while (10 minutes) and noticed that it had moved to another drive and hung there. Eventually, having left it for an hour or more, it showed the GUI, but doing anything with the problem drives caused another hang…

Globetrooting friend left me his Sony VAIO VGN-S4XP/B to look at. Original problem was virus infection obtained whislt in USA Whislt there he used an online "fixit" service (ctrlcentre ?) to help him remove virus but in doing so this "messed" up his laptop. I don't know full story but I received PC in condition whereby XP (Pro) would load with various windows open (CP etc) but no touchpad mouse nor USB port functionality. Also had great difficulty navigatiing with Keyboard to effect any repair. Friend had no software (recovery or otherwise) with him so bit stumped. Decided in the end to try and repair using my own copy of XP Pro No real issue…

Windows Logon Help
by Guest Wayne- 3 replies

Ok, so i ran the windows installation disc on a new hard drive. I installed a new version of windows XP pro and go to where it asks to create user accounts. I clicked 'skip this step'. Upon bootup, it went to the windows logon screen asking for a password for windows with the Administrator account. I figured leaving it blank would work, no. Nor does any other possible default password I could think of. Come to find out, there is no default password for windows? Isn't this a catch-22? How am I supposed to log onto windows when I didn't even create user accounts? I don't have an option for boot in safe mode either. There is only F1 option for setup. …

Recently I was unstalling some programs from my computer and I accidently deleted the SQL Dumper. Is there any way to reinstall without completely reinstalling the entire disk?
