I am attempting to boot a computer running Windows XP Pro and it will show the Windows is starting up screen then proceeds to the choose the username screen. When I choose the username, the computer immediately shuts down. I have tried to boot the machine in Safe Mode with Networking and get the same response. This occurred after running the Computer Associates Anti-Virus program and defragmenting the machine. Any suggestions as to resolution of this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- CBC

I'm sure everybody but me got the word. Why, when I install Windows on a clean drive, and create 2 partitions, does it leave 8MB at the top unpatritioned. I partitioned a drive with Paragon HD manager and it did not do that. Does Windoz actually use this or is it just a doz thing? Will it work if I use the Paragon partitions? thx

Network Connection Failure
by Guest Marina- 0 replies

I have a similar problem as Maurice. I have two XP computers networked. After the Microsoft update I lost connectivity on the Host computer, but could still access internet on Client computer. After downloading the latest version of Zone Alarm Security Suite and reloading the MS update, now my client computer cannot access internet. I get an invalid IP address that cannot be repaired. I have tried disabling ZA on Host computer, but client still will not connect. Client computer has Windows firewall on, btw. It is not an adapter problem on the client, since I can connect to the internet using an unprotected wireless network. The client computer does…

In my ongoing predictions about how people will hate and avoid vista, that started before such a behaviour started, I have been right on everything I said would happen. And now I am right again... When MS tried to pull XP so people would be forced to get vista, I was 100% sure that online sites like amazon or ebay that would have copies of XP for sale would see a spike in sales of XP like nothing ever seen before. And this is exactly whats going on... and will continue to happen until and IF windows7 is out and is better than the stupid idiotic Vista. I predict that soon once people see that they can still get XP from amazon, the xp sales will cli…

Problem with deleting account profile - cannot delete folder
by Guest Censored Syndrome- 4 replies
I deleted an account using DELPROF from the Resource Kit, but it exited with an error, saying that the directory was not empty, or something like that. The user account folder in Documents and Settings was still there, but only containing an empty folder called Cookies. I cannot delete Cookies in explorer or the command line - Access Denied. The Properties for the folder does not have a Sharing or Security tab, so I cannot take ownership that way. Only the General and Customise tabs appear. I cannot use CACLS to take ownership either - Access Denied. I cannot delete the user profile folder that contains this undeletable Cookies folder using RD Cook…

Framework.Net
by Guest Nate Rosenthal- 4 replies

I was cleaniing up my hard disk and deleted Frameworks.Net. Now my windows update won't install the update for it. I am guessing that I can install a version of it from the Microsoft website. If so, does it matter which one. I saw 1.1, 2.5, 3.5. I assume that once I have a version there, the Windows update will have somewhere to go. Also I have hpcmpmgr on the computer and Overland along with it. I don't have any HP printers anymore. Can I get rid of this or does it not matter What about MSN6. Is it safe?

Windows\System\setup.inf??
by Guest Ian D- 0 replies
I happened to look in the Windows\System directory and noticed it was full of old drivers, probably for legacy purposes. Then there's setup.inf, which happens to be the inf file for, yes, Windows 3.1. It even includes info for Win 3.1 to install on 286 and 386 systems. Talk about legacy. This is an XP file dating from the original 2001 release. Interesting!

Desktop icons
by Guest AliceZ- 5 replies
I don't know if the following has happened previously, but I notice on my desktop and notebook that when I turn them on, the desktop comes up and some of the icons are showing as 'white' squares. After a few seconds, the 'white' squares are then replaced by the actual program's icon. Is this normal? Is there any way I can have ALL of the actual program's icons show immediately (no 'white' boxes) when the desktop loads? Rather than some showing right away and some showing a few seconds later (to replace the 'white' boxes)? Hope I have explained this properly. (I just had to install AOL 9.1 on both machines and don't know if this icon 'problem' existed pri…

Running the installation disk yields the message: Windows has already attempted to upgrade the following Windows installation: E:\Windows "A , , , Z" Setup will try to complete the upgrade again * To retry upgrading to Windows XP, press Enter. * To quit Setup press F3. Note that there is no way offered for doing anything else. Indeed pressing F3 and restarting the installation disk yields the same thing. Any help would be appreciated! "Run" command missing...
by Guest Stratocus- 7 replies

I have a laptop, running XP Home, that I bought secondhand a couple of years ago. Never had any issues, and mostly still don't. Except that, today, I wanted to launch an application from the Run Command only to find that it doesn't exist in the Start Menu. I tried right-clicking and "customize" but it wasn't available in the list. I then clicked the Windows + R keys and up pops an error message: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. " I am the only user with Admin privileges. Other than installing a new OS is there any way to overcome these restrictions?

Hi, I want to add a new video card to my HP Pavillion a820n computer. From some advice on the newsgroup, I uninstall the original video on-board driver first. Then, I wanted to delete other left driver under display and video adapter driver after the safe mode bootup (This is the suggestion for the upgrade video driver). But, my computer go to system restore, instead of safe mode bootup. It had quite a long time to restore and to the partition action later. Now, my computer directly goes to the single administer account (previously it has four accounts). Even though I can see the shared directories and files, the other three account files, I lost my documents un…
