WinXP Install To F: Not C:
by Guest Paputxi- 3 replies
I just installed WinXP on a drive that contained a partition containing Linux. When I installed WinXP (into it's own partition), it identified the partition as F: not C:. Three questions: 1) Can I reassign the F: to C: without having to reinstall WinXP and all the applications I have installed (which indicates everything is on F: not C:). 2) If I move the WinXP partition to another drive, will it still show as F: or C:? 3) How would I go about changing the drive from F: to C:? Thanks in advance.

Command-line parameters lost to Perl
by Guest Rich Pasco- 0 replies
I run Indigo Perl under Windows XP. My problem is that Perl scripts aren't able to see the command line that invoked them, unless I prefix their name with an explicit call to my Perl interpreter. Why not? For example, I have a simple script listargs.pl which counts and lists its command-line parameters (in array @ARGV). If I invoke: listargs.pl a b c then I get: 0 parameters However, if I invoke perl listargs.pl a b c then I get: 3 parameters: a b c as desired. Can anyone suggest why the command-line parameters are lost in the first form? - Rich

Mouse Problems
by Guest mcp6453- 12 replies
My audio computer with a Biostar U8668D motherboard has just started experiencing mouse problems. The motherboard has the latest (end-of-life) BIOS. XP is updated and patched to the latest, including SP3. In fact, the only thing that has changed has been SP3. On an increasingly regular basis, when the mouse pointer is moved across the screen, the computer loses communications with the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. The light on the mouse goes out, and the mouse is not functional. The mouse was originally installed as a PS2, so I connected it as a USB. It worked (even without rebooting the computer) but it, too, eventually lost communication. The mou…

Screen rotated 90 degrees
by Guest ralphs- 3 replies

Where is the setting to undo this? I am using a laptop with XP Pro, SP3. In the middle of reading a web page the screen rotated counter-clockwize. The top is now at the left and the mousepad also changed so that right-left now goes up-down. Reboot and it's ok through the initial Windows screen and is rotated from where you select which account on. Reboot in safe mode with network support and you've an 800x600 correctly oriented screen WITHOUT network support (Network Neighborhood thinks the wireless is connected but won't disable).

"Warning from IE Antivirus....Spyware Found"
by Guest Campion67- 7 replies
After X-number of years, I have encountered the above-referenced annoyance popping up every two minutes or less. It claims to have found "8 items." Right now, I have less trouble with the "8 items" than I do with this ad. I really would like to collect all of the geniuses who came up with these annoyances and ship them to their private gulag. Short of that, I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to remove this "warning" asap.

RUNDLL Error Messages
by Guest DJ- 6 replies
During "Startup" I get two messages both of which have "RUNDLL" in the upper left hand corner and both of which begin with "Error Loading." The 2 messages are as follows: 1. c:\windows\system32\uvcemhnc.dll 2. c:\windows\system32\elfgbxoo.dll After I close both of the boxes, the computer doesn't seem to be affected but I know that problems can simmer under the surface and then cause damage down the road. I have an IBM ThinkCentre Desktop. When I am in the Systems Configuration Utility I see the two files under the "Start up" tab but I don't see any way to fix or delete them (if indeed this would be wise). I have gotten advice from Norton that …

User Profiles
by Guest Dave Mc- 0 replies
I need to move 25 workstations to a new domain but would like to copy their domain/user profiles to the new doamin/user.. After changing domains, the old domain profile is not listed so I can't copy it. What IS listed are 2 "Account Unknown" profiles--I suspect they are the old ones but I can't copy them (greyed out). Should I use the wizard to copy the profile before changing domains to a "holding" account or just manually copy. I think I have seen a KB on doing it manually but can't find it now.

Sign-in userid confusion
by Guest MikeB- 2 replies
This is very confusing. Due to some software I installed, my windows login screen reverted to the "classic" sign-in, where one inputs a name and a password in a little pop-up, as opposed to the screen with an icon for each defined user. On this particular computer, I have three users, me, wife and child. The userIDs are not password protected and all have admin authority. These are, respectively, Frank, Cath and Mary. The login pop-up presents the names with an additional letter (the first letter of our last name) as follows: FrankG, CathG and MaryG. It signs in fine, or I can overtype with the defined userid, either way seems to work. Any clues what's go…

I keep losing my connection to the Internet
by Guest Dena Jo- 3 replies

I keep losing my connection to the Internet. This has only been happening since the last automatic update that took place this week. I have two computers (one XP and one Vista) connected via a router, and only my XP computer loses the connection. Has anyone else had this problem since the update? Any suggestions? It's driving me crazy. It seems to happen only when I'm using my browser (IE7). -- Dena Jo Email goes to denajo2 at the dot com variation of the Yahoo domain. Latest Microsoft security updates caused network problems.
by Guest Mark Dyson- 10 replies

I have an HP zd7000A laptop running XP MCE with SP3. Last night the automated update service downloaded what appeared to be the usual suspects: some security patches and the latest malicious software removal tool. After installing and re-booting, my network connectivity has gone to pot. I can still ping external URLs so I know I have a good connection, but any attempt to load a web page or download e-mail results in a time-out error. Likewise when my AVG anti-virus tries to connect to the update server. This was all working perfectly this morning, right up to the instant I re-booted after the patch installs. I'm stymied: the system can't download …

The latest winsdows update for XP severvic pack two hosed my system. I installed it, and when I re-booted I could no longer connect to any internet services even though I was connected to my ISP, the browser would just time out. No similar problem with my laptop that had not yet been updated. I uninstalled the service pack, and then could not get into windows all. I had to run a system restore from the C prompt in safe mode to get my computer back. Paul.

Fix: KB951748/Zone Alarm - Loss of connectivity

For those experiencing a loss of internet connectivity after installing KB951748 with Zone Alarm installed as the firewall, here's the fix by a Zone Alarm moderator: http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=cfg&message.id=52727 >> If the windows update changed the usual needed files for networking/internet, then the ZA will not see >> the changes and continue to use the previously known files and ignore the newer files. I have two similar XP Pro systems. I have the same folder of mp3 files on both. On one of the systems, if I hover over the file in windows explorer, I get a pop-up description that is very detailed and seems to include a lot of the ID3 information. On the other system, if I hover over a file in explorer, I just see basic file info (the same as for any file). I don't remember what I did (if indeed I did anything) to get the first system to behave that way. How do I make the second system behave that way? Bob

ACPI Load Problem After Mobo Change
by Guest Paputxi- 4 replies
I had to replace my old MSI motherboard with Intel CPU (it died) with a new one; totally different from other one (ASUS) and AMD CPU. I am able to boot into Safe Mode, but it won't boot into Normal Mode. Looking at the boot log, everything looks fine until it says "Did not load driver ACPI Multiprocessor PC" followed by other "did not load" messages. I see where other people say to do a repair install of XP. But since it boots into Safe Mode, doing a repair install seems awful drastic in this situation. Does anyone know how to correct this problem without doing a repair install? Thanks in advance.

dll has not been registered
by Guest confusedbydll- 2 replies

A friend's dell laptop with xp home wasn't booting up. There was a corrupted hive file and config file, which were "fixed" using recovery console. Now xp will boot up, but he first error message is: "Wireless Configuration: Notification dll has not been registered, program will not work correctly." If you click ok, you can enter xp, but any program you try to start returns error message: "Problem with Shortcut: This action is only valid for products that are currently installed." So, it appears that after fixing Hive and config, the computer doesn't recognize any of the programs. Suggestions??

stop Annoying Yellow Popups
by Guest tommy- 4 replies

I posted this question previously but believe I found the cause of those annoying yellow popup information balloons. When an abject has an " alt = " tag on it, when the mouse moves over the object an annoying yellow window pops up displaying whatever text follows. I believe in the past most people programming just left this blank, but now more and more things have them. For instance, go to http://www.msn.com and on the top left the little envelope icon next to "Hotmail" pops up the word "Envelope", now move the mouse to the MSN Directory icon and "Figure of an arrow pointing to screen" - come on , is this really neccesary ???? How can Windows be config…
