by Guest ProteanThread- 2 replies

How can I share files on a network that includes a 95 machine, a 2000 machine, 2 xp machines, and a Vista machine? All the other computers (except Vista) see each other and see the Vista machine but can't read the shared files/folders on the Vista machine nor can the Vista machine see the other machines' shared files and folders? The Vista machine has Vista Home Premium. -- Woodzy http://www.rtdos.com

How do I configure XP SP3 such that when a new user account is created, a particular desktop configuration shows up instead of the default Windows desktop? Google is not yet my friend because I don't know the correct terminology for asking this question.

PC freezes, rectangles shown on display
by Guest CrazySaguaro- 4 replies

Has anyone ever seen an error like this? The PC freezes once or twice a day with these crazy rectangles on the display. The PC has Windows XP and is a Lenovo T60. Windows doesn't even have time to respond and no errors are logged in the System Log that I can see. Upon a hard restart, Windows does not show the F8 boot message or come up with any errors/popups when I reach the desktop. Pictures of errors: http://ginab.net/crashes/pccrash1.jpg http://ginab.net/crashes/pccrash2.jpg http://ginab.net/crashes/pccrash3.jpg Thanks for any help. -Gina

Errors during XP Pro setup on laptop
by Guest Walter Cohen- 5 replies
I bought an Acer laptop that came with Vista and I am upgrading (downgrading) the OS to XP Pro. After wiping the hard drive and installing XP, the XP setup went through just about everything and failed with an error of "Setup can't load internet connection wizard" to which I replied OK. It then finished the setup and, upon first reboot, came back with another message : "File download - Do you want to open or save this file?" for the file msobshel.htm from C:\Windows\system32\oobe. I choose open (for some reason) and it brought up the dialog box on what program to open the file with. I just cancelled it out. Anyway, after rebooting the laptop again X…

stray Desktop.ini
by Guest Timothy Daniels- 0 replies

Thanks, Alex. What I had was a shortcut called My Recent Documents, which was a shortcut to the Recent folder which is a hidden folder. But I was able to find the Recent folder and then set the Desktop.ini folder inside it back to "hidden". Your telling me that Desktop.ini was where it belonged was a big help. *TimDaniels* Alex Levi wrote: >When you change folder settings (icon, make it read only ...) this file >Desktop.ini will appear. Can't open Windows Media Player, Search window is blank, IE proble
by Guest Chia1995- 1 reply
I have been unable to get Windows Media Player to open now for several weeks. I did a reinstall to no effect. When I select the search page in the START menu, it opens, but all I see is the puppy, but no text or search fields. IE won't play any flashplayer, java, etc. I am using Mozilla Firefox now to get by the IE problems, but I still can't get into WMP or my Search Window. I found out today that the Help and Support option in START menu won't open as well. All these problems cropped up at the same time. I've done a complete virus scan, but nothing has been found. Any suggestions? Also, I can't find my XP cd so no luck trying a reinstall.

Help debug BSOD on XP SP2
by Guest Gary Fritz- 4 replies
My old XP desktop started getting a BSOD just about the time I got a new laptop. Which was good timing, but I've decided I need to figure out how to resurrect the thing. I'm not having any luck tracking down the cause. Symptoms: system powers up, goes through the Windows splash screen, then BSOD's just before it would display the login page. BSOD says it is an INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR, ***STOP: 000000A0 (0x00000101, 0x00000007, 0xBA517764, 0x00000000). (And naturally some of the later numbers change each time.) I can run the system in "safe mode with networking" but it's not usable in that state. Googling on INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR didn't get me any…

What are the best folders to choose for compressing?
by Guest ju.c- 13 replies

Which folders are best suited for compression? You know, when you right-click a folder, select Properties, Advanced, and check the box "Compress contents to save disk space" For example, I would guess that C:\WINDOWS\Installer is a good choice. A good read, but lacking: Should I Use Windows File Compression? http://www.lockergnome.com/windows/2006/07/04/should-i-use-windows-file-compression/ ju.c
