Bugcheck in Event View after boot
by Guest Bruce.- 0 replies
Just FYI. Here's one for the Google archives. XP SP3. My system is not now crashing nor BSOD but I've been getting this event recorded in the Event Log on EVERY boot. "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x804ef186, 0xbacf374c, 0x00000000). A full dump was not saved." I was getting BSOD a while ago but have since fixed that. It turns out that XP will record the above event message on every boot if you still have this file: c:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP That's the file it usually writes during a BSOD, however the boot code is apparently not smart enough to know it's an old file, so it continues to log …

minimal "System Partition"?
by Guest Timothy Daniels- 14 replies
What is the minimal file set that would form what Microsoft calls the "System" partition (i.e. the Primary partition marked "active" which can boot load XP from another partition)? I know that ntldr, boot.ini, and ntdetect.com are needed. But what else? The swap file? Anything else outside the WINDOWS folder? I'm considering using a single such partition to load multiple instances of XP, each residing in a logical drive within a very large Extended partition. *TimDaniels*

Errors after SP3 update
by Guest Neil Harrington- 22 replies
I've just updated one of my WinXP systems to SP3. Now when it starts up I get two error messages, one after the other: The procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll. The procedure entry point apsInitialize could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll. Clicking OK on each of these closes it and then Windows seems to run normally, but something must be adrift here. Restarting just produces the same two error messages every time. How do I fix this? by Guest Katie- 3 replies

From what I can understand this FIOS only works from home. What can you do if you are elsewhere or in Canada? How do you connect to the Internet? It's a shame to be paying for connection but can only use the laptop from home. Any suggestions? -- Yukon Kate

After installing KB 951748 computer won't resolve web addresses in
by Guest philipwhiuk- 3 replies

Following the recent installation of KB 951748 from Windows Update, my XP SP3 - Home Edition computer fails to resolve DNS address. Prior to this update I had no problems in resolving a DNS. Obviously I'd prefer to keep the update given that Microsoft lists it as an important update. Does anyone have any suggestions as to solving this issue?

by Guest davidhayter57- 5 replies
Well thats how it is. before all of this I didn't know anything about viruses. didn't have any protection or anything. So then obviously I caught a virus on my dell Inspiron 2200 laptop. Actually it was all more like spy ware or whatever. I tried system restoring. Just my luck the last restore point is right after i get the virus so that doesn't work. then i download a free trial of CA virus scan and then get the spy doctor. I ran these in safe mode and now i think i'm pretty much free of infection. now the problem is that i cannot access some websites or some parts of for example i can go to a website like gamefaqs.com butnot a website like 4chan.com also i c…

Recently, every time I boot up and wish to listen to some MP3s I have noticed that the sound volume setting under the Play Control is set to zero i.e. no sound., and I have to manually move the slider to get any sound. Not sure why this has started to happen. Any ideas on how to retain the settings between boot ups? Thanks

Hello, Have Windows XP Home SP3, updated. Found following files. windows\set3.tmp (1767KB) windows\set4.tmp (1064KB) windows\set8.tmp (17KB) Opened with Wordpad, found at the bottom of the file the Microsoft time cert. Located one bit of information on the Microsoft site, not helpful. Probably due to my ignorance. Google found several different types of information, from Microsoft programming to malware. Are they left over from some Windows, security or update installation? Thank you for information concerning this item. take care. beamish.

Problen with Memory Card Reader
by Guest Walter R.- 1 reply

Using Win Xp Pro SP2. When I connect a universal memory card reader from my camera, Kingston FCR-HS219/1, Windows opens up four new hard disks, called Removable Disk M:. through Removable Disk P: Why four disks, instead of one?? When I connect my Epson printer (CX 4660), which also has a universal card reader, it only shows one Removable Disk L: I don't like it when Windows clutters up my Windows Explorer with seemingly unnecessary (3) Removable disks. Is this normal? How can I get rid of the 3 excess Removable disks? Thanks -- Walter http://www.rationality.net -

CD-ROM drive - keep spinup
by Guest Omega_six- 1 reply
This is a strange request but I must ask anyway. I know that modern CD-ROM drives are pre-programmed to spin down after a few minutes of inactivity to help save power or just to make them quieter. However, is there a registry setting or utility to actually keep the CD-ROM drive spinning up for as long as I need it to?

Why can't I backspace?
by Guest Navyguy- 3 replies
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP2, DSL connection with 130GB of free space on my hard drive. The problem is this, most web pages I can back space with no problems whatsoever. However on Yahoo, MSN and IMDB it doesn't work and just cycles and I have to select either the down arrow or go to my favorites to backspace whereas before I didn't have to do this. What's the problem? If I can backspace on most pages why won't it do it on those? Thanks, Robert

Hard drive dying?
by Guest postacct@ymail.com- 3 replies

Computer stops running but doesn't turn off. Monitor goes black and the yellow "access" light on the cpu goes out, but the computer remains on. I have to turn it off and on again to restart. No error messages or other symptoms. Seems to be virus and adware-free based on PC Tools and Ad-Aware scans. Would my guess that the hard drive is conking out be the best guess? Thanks...

ActiveX
by Guest gaudonville- 1 reply
I'm trying to help out a friend with their computer running XP. When I go to Windows Update it, as usual, attempts to determine the update level and asks to run ActiveX. I click "Run activeX" on the information bar but it seems that either ActiveX is not installed or it's become corrupted in some way. Is it possible to dowload ActiveX and reinstall it? or is there another solution as, at the moment the update page is just taking me round in circles. Thanks

this is the following error i get when trying to share a folder or drive; "an error occurred while trying to share XXXX. the data is invalid. the shared resource was not created at this time." can anyone think of what might be the problem (simple file sharing is off, all accounts have passwords, xp-pro-sp3, all firewall and protection of any kind switched off during this error) if not can anyone recommend a 3rd party program to allow me to share drives and folders with other lan users? (shinkoru crashes, p300 is webbased)
