Acronis True Image Boot Disk 1 2 3
by Guest JS- 54 replies

I plan to do some testing which will require a baseline (clean install of Windows XP with SP2) image that I can restore to an newly formatted partition multiple times. I have Norton Ghost but thought I'd try True Image (the 15 day free trial version). Question is, does the trial version allow you to create a True Image boot CD than can be used to restore a partition from a baseline image file stored on another partition. If the trial version does have this feature any tips on creating the boot CD would be helpful. JS

Hi there, I wonder if some kind soul could help please? I have a bunch of computers on my home network with various usernames such as Administrator, Admin and some using my own name. As I use RDP to zoom around my network both locally & remotely I would like to standardise on the username to make it easy to remember which computer has which username. For example my MediaCenter PC was originally setup with a default account of Administrator and all of my program settings, preferences, folders etc are defined as such. Now if I setup a new user (my name for example) I am going to lose all kinds of things as detailed above including probably the…

Windows size

I have a laptop. I used AOE 2 on it, which automatically resizes the window. It even boots up small so it seems to affect the BIOS settings possibly. I can't get it back to how it was. I have connected the lappy to my LCD and it shows smaller screen with black border, ruling out the lappy monitor. I am convinced there is a really easy setting somewhere but can't see it for the life of me. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Windows xp Pro (SP-3 and all updates applied) Dell Inspiron B130 Celeron 1.5 GHz w/ Samsung SN-S082D CD/DVD-RW Nero 7 How can I reset xp to use DMA for the drive? Previously, Nero burned at the true rate (8x) now, even though Nero says it will use 8x it is actually 1.2x Obviously, 53-minutes to burn a data or video DVD is crap. IDE controller Advanced Tab...... Device 0 says Ultra DMA Mode 5 Device 1 says DMA * if available* (current mode - PIO Mode) Thanks

From: "Dave" <davefrick@newsgroup.nospam> | How can I tell what apps/services are running at startup? | When my Windows XP SP3 system boots up, the CPU usage is pegged at 100% for | about 3-5 minutes. | When I look under Processes in Task Mnanager, I see the process svchost.exe | but it is my understanding this is just a process shell for some DLL that it | does not specifically identify. | I checked the startup folder for all users (C:\Documents and | Settings\dave\Start Menu\Programs\Startup) and the only file in this folder | is desktop.ini. | How can I tell what app or service is actually chewing up my CPU at startup? Hello All, i recently deleted the partitions on my 2 installed hard drives and reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP home, It only installed on one of the 2 drives. the other did not show up on "MY COMPUTER". So I did a reinstall and only picked that drive to add a partition and install. Windows then reformatted the first install then installed XP home on both drives. Now when my computer starts it shows 2 Windows XP home loads and asks which one I want to start. I have reinstalled before and never had this problem. Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling? I believe it is using up memory this way or am I wrong? Please HELLLLLLLLLLLLP. -- t…

New Volume?
by Guest ManyBeers- 3 replies

My laptop running WindowsXP SP 3 had one harddrive divided into 2 partitions... C:(system) and D:\drives. Ok ,so i recently decided to wipe my D: and split it up into two parts. First part would be a new smaller D:\ drive and the second half would be left as Free space to eventually put a Linux distro on. Anyways now in Windows Explorer it shows D:\New Volume and not D:\local disk. How come? ps If you are wondering why the drive letter shows first it is a registry change i made several years ago. I prefer the drive letter first.

Windows update fails on old reinstall
by Guest OSProf- 4 replies

As a result of perpetual blue screens, I needed to re-install Windows XP on my 3-year-old Dell from the manufacturer's installation CD. Previously, I had kept everything up to date with Windows updates. However, the re-installation caused Windows and Internet Explorer to revert to their old versions (IE 6 and SP2, without any of the security updates of the last three years). After installation, I tried to update to SP3; it downloaded the update successfully, but the installation failed. Therefore, I tried "Custom updates." It downloaded 96 updates successfully, including the IE7 installer, but none of them successfully installed. I uninstalled a bunc…
