Tray icons gone... SP3?
by Guest Gary S. Terhune- 7 replies

I just recently noticed that my tray icons are almost all gone (all except Avast!, the network connection are all that come up during a startup. Now I run a tight ship, but not THAT tight! I have three external HDs and no Safely Remove Hardware icon, for instance. (I reinstalled them and the icon came back to stay for one reboot. But I should also have Volume Control, (again, I can fix that until the next reboot.) Everything is enabled in MSCONFIG. I Googled, with mixed results. And I can't be certain that it's coincidental with SP3 installation or some other one I've done since. But since it's hot and smoky and I'm tired, I thought I'd ask about it h…

HELP: Fatal System Error
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 6 replies

Yesterday, my laptop running Windows XP SP2 booted up fine. I logged in, and ran SuperAntiSpyware and told it to do a scan. Today, I checked the laptop, and SuperAntiSpyware had finished its scan, and it only found a bunch of adware cookies. I told it to remove the cookies, and it prompted me to restart Windows. I clicked OK. When it rebooted the computer, it got to the point where the dialog box says "Windows is starting up..." But then the dialog box disappeared, and after a few seconds, the screen turned black and said: STOP: c000021a {Fatal system error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0…

by Guest W. Guy Delaney- 4 replies

I have a home network which includes a networked prinnter, two PCs, and one laptop. All machines are running Windows XP with all updated and service packs applied. On my laptop, and only on my laptop, when I boot it, I get an error message which says: "System Errors: Duplucatie name exits on the network." I have shut down both PCs and my printer, and I still get the message when I boot my loptop. This message did not appear until today; otherwise it has been booting without this error. What do I need to do to resolve this problem?

I ran Zone Alarm Security spyware detection software last night and it detected a malware named "Win32.BackDoor.Bifrost" in "C:\WINDOWS \system32\Process.exe" . The Zone security suite gave me the option to quarantine the file of to delete the file. I am wondering if the file it is listed as being in is an actual Win 32 file? Should I delete the file? Thanks! Steve

Norton SystemWorks 2007 & 2008-Windows XP SP3 Compatability-Troubl
by Guest duchovlet- 2 replies

I tried installing Norton SystemWorks Premier 2007 onto my new laptop which is running Windows XP SP3 Home Edition. The installation SEEMED to go ok but then when I tried doing the initial LiveUpdate I ran into a host of problems. I will explain all below and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. FYI: this is my very first post to the MS Community discussion groups so bare with me and give me any explanation in layman terms, please. Prior to NSW install the laptop worked fine and NO viruses or threats were found when I did both the free online virus and security scans from Symantec's website AND the virus scan that runs as part of (and pr…

Quick Service Pack 3 Question
by Guest JCO- 8 replies
Will the Actual Service Pack be modified and re-released? Or will we have to just deal with all the hot fixes... I have the CD disk downloaded (ISO) which has lots of other things, but of course the main part of the disk is the WINDOWSXP-KB936929-SP3-X86-ENU.EXE (the actual service pack 3). Will KB936929 be modified so that we won't have to deal with all the fixes? Thanks

Start menu - items on far left have disappeared
by Guest Amy- 2 replies
When I click on Start, the part of the Start menu *directly* above the Start button is completely empty. To the right of that, there is the usual My Documents, My Computer, Control Panel, etc. However, the left side is 100% blank. Any idea how to get the items to show back up again, please? I've explored my Start Menu and made sure the shortcuts are there for the items, which they are...they're just not showing up. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! - Amy

increase text size
by Guest sf- 5 replies

I know how to increase overall text size via Display (settings > advanced)... but how to I increase the text in whatever that bar is called between the start button and the clock? Also, IE is set on Largest Text but it's more like small (tiny). I can make my firefox text as large as I need, it doesn't stick... but at least I can make it larger. I know there's a setting I'm not finding. Can anyone direct me? Oh, btw.... for some reason, an ATI icon is now displayed on all of my tabs under Advanced. I have no idea what happened, but this may be a symptom of the problem. I'm virus free according to AVG. TIA -- I never worry about diets. The onl…

I enjoy watching AOL videos on my computer. recently I downloaded the right driver for my video card which enables me to use 2 monitors. with this placing my video on a standard TV really brings out the color that the shows were meant to be seen in. Here comes my trouble though. The video when put full screen is very choppy. Also when I go to work on the computer monitor the video goes back to its original window. How can I fix these 2 problems? I am running internet explorer 7 with 512 MB memory

Repairing XP- MCE
by Guest astrosoup- 3 replies

I do alot of home PC tech support in a small town. Yesterday I ran across a computer with Media Center Edition that had a few backdoor Trojans lurking about on it. I deleted all the malware I could find, but I think one of them took a little piece of the Operating System with it, because it is showing some quirky behavior such as repeated unexplained system errors and occasionally restarting on login. I perused through the event log, but there is nothing there to indicate a problem. Anyway, when I am sitting in front of the computer again, I will run an "sfc /scannow". If that doesn't work, I'd just assume fix it with a repair install, but I am pretty …

Caching files
by Guest John Blight- 0 replies

I'm investigating an error in a custom application that only seems to happen when a particular action is performed for the first time following a restart of the PC. (A Properties dialog contains a grid-type control that's an interface to custom properties in a Visio diagram. When a property is updated in the dialog, and OK clicked to trigger the update in the Visio diagram, the property values are sometimes wiped.) When this dialog box is opened for the first time, it takes noticeably longer to open, and it is then when the error occurs. Other observations so far: 1. The error has only occurred for Limited users. 2. The error may happen, say, 3 …

Separate Partition for Application Software
by Guest Alan C. Brown- 6 replies

What are the the pros & cons of installing applications software on a different/separate partition from the operating system (Win XP Pro SP3) ? In the past I have split my hard drive into 4 partitions ; C: Win XP Pro D: Applications E: Data&Downloads F: BackUps The general logic was that you don't lose everything if you have to do a clean install (reformat C: first) of Win XP Pro. As far as the D: Applications partition is concerned, you would still have to reinstall all the applications software, but the pros would be : - the applcations to be reinstalled are listed in D:Program Files - any data files associated with the applications…
