How to diagnose a STOP: 0x0000008E?
by Guest Bruce.- 10 replies
XP SP3 and all current patches. I rarely reboot my system and did so last night for the first time in quite a while. During that time I've installed several software packages so I can't easily tell if one of those might be responsible for the BSOD I am now getting, assuming one is, which I'm not sure of. Just as the reboot nears completion and the initial blank blue screen appears (prior to the loading of the desktop background), it intermittently crashes to a BSOD with a STOP: 0x0000008E It is very intermittent and doesn't crash every reboot. I can't predict if or when it will do it. Sometimes a few times in a row, sometimes not for several r…

Office Genuine Advantage team told me to post here

Hi, I have an activated Office 2007 Ultimate which seems fine in every way EXCEPT when I try to pull down an Excel 2003 "MSN Stock Quote" macro (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=485FCCD8-9305-4535-B939-3BF0A740A9B1&displaylang=en) which fails re-validation of Office 2007 with "Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007: Product Not Activated." I was instructed by "Lori MS" in the Office Genuine Advantage forum to delete the file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\data.dat to cause it to re-activate. I didn't have a data.dat file in that directory but did have an opa12.dat which I renamed and it …

When I open a folder and want to Right Click 'Arrange Items By Date' - that facilitiy seemed to have disappeared from the Menu once I upgraded from Office 2000 Professional to Office Professional 2003 and from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP. I had hoped that Microsoft would have updated this feature and put it back on? Do you know what I can do? If so, much apprecaited. Thanks.

XP Logging on then immediately logging off
by Guest RipperT- 14 replies

I have an HP Pavillion desktop w/ XP (don't know if it's Home or Pro) that logs off as soon as it logs on. I get welcome screen, logon screen, desktop wallpaper, then logoff. This happens with the only account on the machine, the same account in safe mode and the admin account in safe mode. My research points to a corrupt userinit.exe file in Windows\system32. I removed the HDD to another computer and replaced the userinit.exe file with a known good one, then returned the drive to its host machine, but no change. Further research suggests that a registry key may still point to a wrong userinit.exe file or wrong path, and I would like to check the registr…

Bluetooth Notification Area Icon Disappearing...
by Guest lupo666- 0 replies

Hi, I have a Trust Bluetooth dongle, which works perfectly. I use it to connect a Logitech Laser Mouse and an LG L600V, the latter thru its own software. Never had a problem. Lately, the bluetooth icon which used to sit in the system tray (notification area) is gone. I have checked the registry and the relative key is set to 1. If I open bluetooth thru the control panel, I uncheck > apply > check > apply, the icon reappears and works perfectly, until the next restart, where it's gone again... Considering: - SSPD Discovery Service is Disabled - UPNP Service is Disabled - Registry Key is set to 1 Any suggestions? Regards, Lupo

When I attempt to power it up (battery only) I get no lights and it doesn't power up. When I plug in the AC adapter it turns on right away but the date goes back to 2000 and time was screwed up. I go into control panel, date/time and plug in the correct date/time and everything is peachy. Again, if I pull out the AC Adapter while the laptop is on, it remains on. Hosts file effectiveness
by Guest RobertVA- 8 replies

Am I misunderstanding the use of the Hosts file to block web sites? I thought adding "127.0.0.1 acme.com" was supposed to override the Domain Name Server's data for the IP address when ANY browsers requested a page from acme.com (made up domain name), directing the browser to the local hard drive. Since the requested page probably isn't on my hard drive this should permit me to block things like advertising pop-ups from that site. So many sites won't function without JavaScript. I'm not enthusiastic about turning it off. However, I continue to find cookies from these domains when I scan for tracking cookies. Third party cookies are turned off …
