Hi everyone, I got a NEXS iFlash M1 jump drive a few days ago; it says no drivers necessary except for Win 98/98SE on the packaging. When I plugged it into my laptop (I'm running Win XP Media Center) up pops the Add New Hardware Wizard. So I follow the prompts; it looks for drivers on the machine and (presumably) on the Windows Update site and says it can't find any. I went to Windows Update myself too, didn't find any drivers. I tried the jump drive on computers running Vista, Windows 2000 and Win XP Pro and it worked fine;Plug n Play did its' thing. I'm at a complete loss as to why Media Center refuses to 'Plug n Play' the jump drive. Can't find …

Is it possible to change the XP "default" filetype icon back to the Photoshop icon, after Corel Photopaint changed the association to the Corel "icon" ago ? I've tried the "Open With" and checked "always open this type of file with this program (Adobe Photoshop)" - and that works but, when I use Windows Explorer to list file "details" listing, ...they all have that darned "Corel" icon. ....and whilst rummaging in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | File Types | ...and scrolling down and selecting the *.jpg filetype | ...shows "Details for 'jpg' extension" Opens with Adobe Photoshop You have customized files with extension 'JPG' To restore …

Error sync-ing internet time
by Guest Bart- 12 replies

I have been getting an error message when trying to synchronize my computer time with time.nist.gov on my laptop. Message is: "An error occurred getting the status of the last synchoronization. The RPC server is unavailable." I have been connected to the internet when attempting to sync. Same message with all of the server choices in Control Panel > Date&Time>Internet Time. No problem with sync-ing on my desktop minutes after trying and failing on the laptop. Both are running Norton, so I don't think it's a firewall problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

capacity limiation of using external RAID5? If so, any solution?
by Guest King Cheung- 2 replies

Dear All, I just bough a new CFI Sil3726 Port-Multiplier Box (that is, an external hard disk tower), which comes with a Sil3132R5 PCI-Express lX HBA card (that is, a controller), and I put five WD 640Gbit hard disks into it. I wanted to combine all five disks, total 3200Gbit to run Raid 5. However, when I went to Disk Management under Computer Management, my computer didn't recognize any new hard disk connected, so I couldn't initialize and format. Then if I only combined three hard disks together, (that is, 1920Gbit only), the Disk Management could recognize it and asked me to initialize. In fact, this unit is my second one. My first one is ident…

When I attempt to set a Scheduled Task I receive the following error message: An error has occurred while attempting to set task account information Specific error is 0x80070005 Access is denied You do not have permission to perform the requested operation. I understand for security reasons you must put in a password. I recently had to re-install the O/S. I use the computer at home and I did not want to put in a password to use in Administrator each time I boot up the computer. Is there anyplace in the registry that I can make an adjustment for the password for Scheduled Task in order for me to run Scheduled Task? Thanks in advance for your assista…

On my IBM/Lenovo laptop, I (stupidly) downloaded some malicious software from Limewire (now removed) , I'm having continuing problems with IE7 in that when I log into various sites with chatrroms, IE closes without warning - even with multiple tabs open. I installed and ran "Spybot Search & Destroy" and it found various problems and fixed them. I have a PC also running IE7 and trying to understand I compared registry settings and one difference I've noticed now is in the HKEY_USERS section.... In my PC - HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-809525202-2278278253-2770387004-1006\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Feature Control\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDO…

I get the following error message when double left clicking within a Viking Program called 4D Embroidery : {Windows cannot find .'(null)'Make sure you are typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, then click search.} This is no typing of the name. I click the icon, up pops the object that I requested in a separate window along with this error message. I cancel the error message and continue .. Although windows does what I request, that message pops up every time. What is going on? It is extremely annoying. This is occurring on my wife's computer but she does not know how to ask for help Thanks Ross

by Guest IanUK- 3 replies

Hi, I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP3, & for the last 3 days when I boot my PC, a error report appears, & informs me that osCheck has encountered a problem & has had to close? I have sent this error report, & tried running my AV, defrag, error check, but nothing is working. When I search my computer, there is an osCheck.exe listed, & it says that it is a Symantec App, & there is also a OSCHECK.EXE prefetch file listed. I did speak to Symantec/Norton earlier, & they said my security is working ok, & to contact Microsoft regarding this, so I wondered if anyone on here can help? Also does anyone know if Microsoft ac…

Which configuration of the power saving energy of the PC to preserve as much as possible the hard disc Hello, I usually activate the power saving energy on my PC what has for result to stop the hard disk rotation of the trays of my discs when they are not used during 5 minutes, but when they are seeking again, the trays restart, what takes some seconds so that they can find their rotation speeds and it takes some seconds to do so and it occurs finally quite often. I wonder if these frequent stops and restarts rotations of the trays of the hard discs do not engender finally more wears of the hard discs than when these trays turn constantly when the management o…

Actually, a friend wants me to "fix" his laptop. There are no icons on the screen. No "My Computer", no recycle bin, nana. I can get there via the "start" button, but I have no idea how the system ha hidden the desktop. I can't find a shortcut to the Recysle icon anywhere. How can I recreate it? explorer sometimes opens slow - RegMon reports ShellNoRoam\BagMRU reads
by Guest Jozsef Bekes- 1 reply

Hi Guys, I am a programmer and I never use the built in file browser of Windows (Total Commander rulez ;-)) But a colleauge of mine (non programmer) does use Windows Explorer, and sometimes it opens very slow for him. I have done some investigations, and this is what I have found: I have attached with windbg and whenever I hit break, explorer.exe was reading the registry. So I have downloaded regmon and produced a quick and a slow report. The main difference seems to be that in the slow case explorer.exe is reading values in the registry under the following path, around 20 thousands (20000) of times: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Ba…

Automated System Recovery Disk
by Guest RN1- 4 replies

I would like to create an Automated System Recovery Disk prior to installing WinXP SP3 (since my PC refused to start after installing SP1 & I had to re-install WinXP in my PC & hence wouldn't like to take any chance after installing SP3). To do so, I navigated to Programs-->Accessibility-->System Tools-- >Backup from the Start menu, clicked the link "Advanced Mode" on the welcome screen & finally clicked the "Automated System Recovery Wizard" button but I think it's backing up all the files residing on my hard disk (though I haven't selected any drives) instead of just the system files & the other necessary system information necessary …

One of my customer's PC's was knocked out by a power surge through the modem connection. It has an OEM copy of XP home. It is my understanding that if I replace the motherboard, then she will have to buy a new OS if she wants one from Microsoft. This basically means her computer is a pile of junk.

by Guest Still learning- 53 replies

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080630/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_xp REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista. Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP. Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to …
