USB behavior in Windows XP / Admin rights
by Guest Sandy Wood- 5 replies

We've run across an issue with non-admin users on Windows XP and USB devices. We've found that when we plug in, say a USB camera, install the software as an admin and then have the non-admin user login, the device works fine. We're getting calls now from users that after they power down and backup, they are being asked to install the software again. I'm wondering if anyone is seeing this behavoir. I've seen some posts out there that may offer some clues. Once post mentioned that maybe the non-admin user rebooted and then plugged the USB device into another USB port where it would be required to have the software installed again. It is inferred that is …

Hello Mr. Blake, in my 8/19/08 thread "IE7 Ready for Prime Time", I got a blank screen and error warning: Java Script: Void (0). Did you respond with anything that could be causing this error? I have had this come up a few other times and I am at a loss as to what to make of it. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks, -- Gregory

Hi All, I need help shutting down a virtual machine running under virtual box. I am only including the Linux code as it might be of some help understanding what is going on. (And I know a lot of you are conversant in both, like I am.) If you don't understand the Linux stuff, please keep reading until you hit the XP stuff. Host: CentOS 5.2 Guest: XP-Pro-SP3 From a Crontab command, I am trying to turn off an XP virtual machine. I use this command: kdesu -u todd -c "/usr/bin/VBoxManage controlvm VirtualXP acpipowerbutton" It works, except, I get a prompt on the xp virtual machine stating "other people are logged onto this computer. Shutting do…

Is a virus scanner/firewall really necessary?
by Guest Danger_Duck- 24 replies

Here's my perspective: I use the internet almost exclusively to: 1. Check e-mail 2. Check facebook 3. Read/post in newsgroups 4. Browse info in trusted sites (wsj.com, wikipedia) 5. Watch youtube videos. 6. Occasionally download files. I figure firefox and gmail both have filters and warnings about "fake" sites and spam/phishing e-mails (1), I've not heard of any facebook attacks (2), newsgroups are simply http requests (3), I only click on links whose url make sense(4), and never heard of virus/trojan/spyware on youtube(5). As for (6), this is one place where I see a vulnerability. But most of my downloads are things like Eclipse plug-ins or files …

ASR without full backup in XP
by Guest Tony- 6 replies
I want to create an ASR in case of problems when installing SP3. But it seems that ASR insists on copying pretty well the whole contents of my C drive. It certainly does all of "My Documents" and "Shared Documents", so I would need media capable of holding 50+ GB. This is fine if you have a tape drive or a spare HD installed, which I don't. But I already have full backups of my own data on DVD and USB drive. All I need from ASR is the system files. So, can I stop the ASR wizard backing up "My Documents" and "Shared Documents"? Or is there another way to be able to get the system working again if all goes wrong? What do other folks do? Personal d…

by Guest Allyson- 18 replies

I REALLY hope someone can help me! I keep getting these error messages saying my "Computer is infected. Get an antivirus or spyware remover to clean it". And then I get redirected to a window advising me to purchase "Antivirus XP 2008". Has anyone else received these messages? Is this a genuine Microsoft product? I have Nod32 Antivirus. And I had been using Spybot regularly which was working really well but it has suddenly stopped working. Can anyone help me to get rid of these messages?

Unable to execute some DOS Commands after XP Reinstall
by Guest Jim Grimes- 5 replies
After I did a clean re-install of XP, I found that I could no longer see any ICON for MS-DOS (I can still get to DOS thru the Run command); and the computer does not recognize some DOS commands (I can't format a floppy disk, for example). Can anyone point me in the right direction for an answer to this problem? As far as I can tell, the reinstall has shown no other problems. The missing Icon is not a huge problem, but I suspect its absence is related to the inability to run certain DOS command.
