SP3 uninstall question
by Guest xylophone- 12 replies
My Dell XP was on SP1. Had to reinstall Windows. Chose to do so to SP3. Used Dell reinstall CD and thereafter Microsoft/Windows Update. Works perfectly. Now, may have to consider uninstalling SP3 in order to install a Sony camcorder program which is SP2. Enquiring via retailer if program OK with SP3 (Sony website not mention SP3, at all: why not?). Meantime, I see in Add/Remove I can uninstall SP3 there. My question is - if I do so, and bearing in mind I reinstalled Windows to SP3, will the uninstall take me back to SP2? Might there be problems there? The reinstall was traumatic, and I don't want to reinstall Windows again if I can possibly avoid i…

by Guest sunrf1- 12 replies

Hi, whenever I plug in my external WD HD the mouse cursor will jump into the notification area and click on random icons. This problem has only recently started to occur. After the problem appeared I suspected a problem with the usb drivers which I then un- and reinstalled. Next I reinstalled the mouse drivers, then I messed with the settings for the mouse and lastely I updated to SP3. I also checked for viruses and such. This problem occurs w/ and w/o the optical Logitech mouse plugged in. HP TC4200 Tablet, XP Pro SP3 Right now I don't know what else to do, can anyone help me here? Thank you

by Guest DonR- 1 reply

This dell system is just out of the box and upgraded from SP2 to SP3 with users set up. When you log in as a user name it will not shut down or logoff without holding in the power button unless you are in safe mode. When you log in as the Administrator it will shut down or log off normally. Any thoughts. Don Thanks for your time. ---

shutting down applying patches issue
by Guest Phil- 5 replies
When Windows XP Professional shuts down and there are patches to apply it states applying patch 1 of 15 and that you should not turn off the computer... It appears as if it only applies one patch and then turns off by itself. The next time I boot up and then shut down it says 1 of 14. Does anyone know why ir's only applying one patch?

Is it necessary to have Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0? It seems a little redundant to me. Can the older versions be removed safely without any performance issues? Just wondering.

by Guest HLawrence- 4 replies

Hello all, I have a problem on my Windows XP Professional system. Have been given a VB program to fix which has the GRAPH32.OCX object included. This object is not registered in my system. When I try to register (either from the Start Command line or opening a Command window as administrator) I get no response from the command. Registering other objects works fine (either I get the command was loaded or failed message), but with this object zippo. I have copied the object from various DLL repositories on the net hoping that my version is corrupt- but still nothing. Have looked at the process using ProcMon and it displays SUCCESS for the result at all levels…

by Guest zirath- 16 replies

I've been trying to install an hp laserjet 4L. The device manager lists lpt1 but the add printer wizard doesn't. The automatic printer installation fails with the error message that there was a problem with the port. I created the lpt1 port using the add printer wizard and the printer is installed to it and functions, but each time I boot the plug and play detection finds the printer and keeps trying to install it and fails. Help appreciated.

Windows XP camera and scanner window
by Guest Roger- 1 reply
I accidentally set my camera and scanner window to go to Wrod every time I connect my camera to transfer photos. And I checked to not ask me again. So I am stuck with Word, which is useless for storing photos. I want to be able to transfer and store my photos in My Pictures file like I used to. And do it with minimal effort like I used to be able to do when the camera and scanner window would come up each time I CONNECTED MY CAMERA, that allowed me choices. I guess that was/ is the default way. I am somehow unable to reset my laptop to a previous date to undo this change that I made- which is now eveidently permanent so far. If anyone can instruct me how to…

Re: IE cannot display webpage

Re: IE cannot display webpage I just thought of one more thing to try. Using a Command Prompt Window you can do a Trace Route ( TraceRt ) to your site. It will show you the hops ( from your PC to the destination ) and may help diagnose why the bookstore won't load. Click Start, Run ( Type ) Cmd [Enter] >TraceRt http://www.christianbook.com *Each hop shows how the packets move from your PC to the destination. "R. I am finding that the /Z switch on xcopy has no effect. It works on Copy - copy /z I am aware of what it does, and how it works. I have used it with Copy. Can anybody else see either - the same problem with xcopy on their machine ? - that it does have an effect on their machine ? I am wondering if this is an XP problem When I say xcopy with /z does nothing. I mean, xcopy behaves exactly the same without it.

XP and SATA drive assignments
by Guest Timboi- 8 replies
Hi, How does XP assign SATA drives? I'm having unepxected results when trying to image a SATA HDD. I configure XP on a SATA HDD connected to SATA0. I then attach another HDD to SATA1 (or another SATA channel). I would expect the orignal drive to be assigned disk0 in XP disk manager but no, it decideds that the secondary drive will be drive0 and the drive in SATA0 will actually be drive1. Why is this? It makes it very difficult to predict which drive will be which, when trying to clone drives. It makes no sense to me, which is why I'masking this question. At least with IDE, you knew which drive would be set as the first drive. Isn't SATA supposed to …

Re: Seeking ways to free up disc space. Please help Thanks for this suggestion. When you suggest a "slave" drive, are you saying I should consider putting in another hard drive or another external drive? It seems that this is a good solution to solving some of my problems if programs are dumping info on my hard drive without me realising it. XP professional, system checks for needed updates, they are listed, install is selected, the download window pops up, each download in turn then fails, i have tried everything i can think of, non of the KB articles seem to deal with this, there is no warning, no error code, it simply shows download failed in the download box.
