When I start my PC and the screen comes up it just says "To begin, click your user name" but there is nothing there to click so I can log in. On the PC I have these accounts-Administrator,1 user. and something called asp I think. The PC was working fine until I used a tweaking prog so I guess I did something wrong. But I can't get in! I've tried everything but nothing works. Thank-you

Accessibility using NNPT based Newsgroups. 1 2
by Guest Ibex- 37 replies

My OS is WinXP Pro SP3. I reside in a less developed part of SEAsia. I used to be on a dial-up connection but about 9 months ago changed Internet Service Provider (ISP) who is providing me now with an ADSL connection of variable speed. Since about 3 weeks or so, all of a sudden I am unable downloading/sending messages from various NNPT based Newsgroups. But accessing (browsing) the Internet and e-mail facilities is not a problem at all. The ISP technicians came to my place 3 times but could not find the problem, in fact they knew little about Newsgroups. They finally suggested replacing the router which was provided by the ISP. Well, I purchased a 'Lin…

Windows uses 4 GB? Really?
by Guest Canyon- 13 replies

I’ve done a lot of research regarding this issue and frankly I’m getting a migraine in the heat of the Southern Oregon 110 degree days! So I quit!!! I bought 4 GB of RAM because I thought it would speed up my system a bit. My motherboard happily stated in its manual that it supports 4 GB of RAM. This crazy issue regarding more than 2 GB of RAM wasn’t readily available I had no idea about it. So… I happily bought 4 GB of RAM and was proud of it! My system seemed to boot a bit faster. Microsoft Office seemed to load a bit faster. Games seemed to run even just a tad faster. I was happy though not ecstatic. But I was shocked when I noticed that My Computer/Pro…

Mapped drive showing *NT5CSC file system
by Guest Ken G.- 1 reply

I have a desktop running xp pro and NTFS file system and a laptop running XP MCE and Fat32 file system in a network. The desktop sees the mapped drive on the laptop as always disconnected and unavailable to connect and with a file system called *NT5CSC. I believe the different file systems are not a problem in a network, so why is the mapped drive on the laptop always disconnected, and where did that file system come from?

User Rights...

First, I apologize for cross-posting, but didn't realize I was in the "Media Center" forum before I hit post. So, here it is... ---------- Windows XP Home SP2 Broadband Internet I'm setting up a Windows XP Home computer. I have several users on already and all is working just fine and dandy. My issue is this...I would like to enable the Guest account, but can't figure out how to get internet working under that account. So, I figured I'd just create a new user with admin access and simply restrict that individual user to suit my needs. However, as there is no group policy editor, I can't figure out how to do that. Any ideas? Thanx.

I'm running xp pro svc pk 2, on a standalone and it appears that I am hosting a domain that I can't admin. I cannot download, update, install, etc. When I try to update I'm told I don't have admin permission to do so. I cannot get this out. My whole system is running on logs and manifests and my bios and root have been changed. Help me please! I've been working on this for a while, Seagate (my harddrive manf) seems to think that somebody with a wireless router took over my sys. Any solutions? Advice? I thank you in advance for any assist you might provide. kind regards Jean

howto get key window robber/thief?
by Guest Philipp Ott, Wien- 1 reply

Hello! I got a strange phenomen running wild on 2 PCs. PC#1 is a real PC (XP up2date, with some Norton AV guard running) and the PC#2 is a virtual (vmware) PC (xp up2date as well, with AntiVir protected). PC#1 uses remote desktop to work on PC#2. So far all is fine and pink. However, often it happens that when people work remote on PC#2 keys get swallowd invisibly and the foreground window is lost, and then a split-second later reactivated. For example: you type a sentence in Word and suddenly the blue title bar starts to flicker blue/gray - and while you continue typing every other character is lost (due to the fact that Word is no longer the keywindo…

Profiles Loading Slow - Need help with advanced logging
by Guest Luke- 1 reply

Note: Not sure where to post this, but I've also. posted under server 2003 with no response. I'm using Mandatory profiles on PC's in one of my labs on Server 2003 network. The profiles load very slow and I can't figure out why. I don't see anything abnormal in the event viewer and was curious of other ways to do some logging. When I log on, the "Loading your personal settings" is very quick < 5 seconds "Applying your personal setting" is the slow part >60 seconds Logging off also takes significant time also. "Logging off" >40 seconds "Saving settings" <5 seconds The reason I believe this isn't normal is because I have other PC…

Boot Options
by Guest JohnD- 3 replies

I have a number of networked XP machines. They all boot automatically all the way to the desktop without stopping for passwords or welcome screens. Except one. This one I recently ran Windows Update on and, perhaps foolishly, decided to include the optional software updates. Perhaps this is the root of my peoblem? This machine is set identically to the others in Control Panel/User Accounts/Change how users log on. Both "Use Welcome Screen" and "Enable fast user switching" are checked in all cases. However, this one stops at the Welcome Screen and I seem to have a choice of clicking on my name, which is irritating, or entering a password, which i…

Windows XP shell commands?
by Guest John Doe- 1 reply

Thanks to Ken Blake, I have this much for showing the desktop. [shell] Command=2 IconFile=explorer.exe,3 [Taskbar] Command=ToggleDesktop That is made using a text editor and then saved as "filename.scf" I'd like to make a shortcut like that for tiling windows. Are there Taskbar commands in addition to "ToggleDesktop"? I do know that right clicking on the taskbar brings up a menu, but I need portable. Thanks. -- The first big front wheel rollerblades. http://www.flickr.com/photos/27532210@N04/2565924423/
