Bootup / Startup Issue on XP Pro SP2
by Guest LA35- 0 replies

Hi, I'll 'try' and keep this quick: A couple of days ago my computer, upon start/bootup, came up with the message stating the the "ntoskrnl.exe file was missing or corrupted and needed to be reloaded." Looking online (not ms.com) I was pointed to getting this file from the WinXP CD (note. my version is XP Pro SP2) using the 'expand' command in DOS. I was unable to do this as I kept getting a message that the file could not be created. Then, again looking elsewhere online for more ideas, I tried doing a 'fixboot' in DOS hoping to repair the boot-up. As you may know, this started to 'rebuild/create a new boot sector.' After a while I finally got a mess…

by Guest - Bobb -- 1 reply

I've never used RA on my PC and now trying to be the "expert". My niece sent me email invite - I clicked attachment - she got nothing on screen - eventually I get a "can't find client'-type message. I had her turn off firewall - same. After a few minutes we rescheduled. She has XP SP2 and DSL router .... big-picture-wise, to get ready to do this, what are settings to have her check ? RA - is on -as she sent me email. I'll have her turn off firewall - she's on Verizon DSL - I'm on Comcast cable - any issues there ? I can see router IP in her address - I thought RA would " handle that" ? ( I changed numbers in message to xxx while reviewing) If we'r…

Error after installin SP3
by Guest Sam- 2 replies

After installing SP3 on a few machines and rebooting for the first time I get two command windows come up on the screen. One closes and the other repeats the message "Error: the parameter is incorrect" a half dozen times then closes. Things appear to be working fine other than this message that never reapears. Anyone seen this. I believe it may have something to do the fact that my profiles are also deleted at shutdown (on purpose).

What is c:/windows/installer?
by Guest its_my_dime- 3 replies

I am trying to remove the last pieces of Norton software. I've run the Symantec Removal Tool. Add/Remove programs shows something called: Symantec Technical Support Web Controls still remaining. I have no idea which program initially installed it and there is nothing on the Symantec web site. Clicking REMOVE gathers info and then says that it can't find SymADataWeb.msi in c/windows/installer. Search finds neither the file nor the folder on my computer. I can, however, download the msi file from the Symantec web site but don't know where to put it. Help, please.

Installation Problem
by Guest Rascal- 4 replies

I apologize for what is basically a duplicate posting - but for some reason my prior posting shows up on the forum but when I click on it I get it I get 'community message not available'. Perhaps my specific mention of a third party software product is causing a problem (?) - so I am unable to see responses that have been posted. In any case, when trying to install a money management software product (after a prior version was installed) I see files extracting and then get the message 'Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close. No files are created - the install does not get very far at all. Many attempts including un-stalling the prior ve…

Win XP Home SP3 In Documents and Settings under Application Data and Local Settings, I have about two dozen different Identities. Some show a modification date back to 2004. The ones in Local Setting have only a Microsoft folder. The ones in Application Data show as empty folders Do I need to have all these things? If not, how do I determine which I can delete? Thank you very much.

The revision I am referring to is MS07-042-CRITICAL. When I download the appropriate version (Windows XP Home Edition SP2) before installation I am asked whether I want to modify, repair or remove the item in question. I am stumped as to what selection to make so any help would be appreciated so I do not make the wrong choice. Thank you in advance for your help.

User created desktop shortcuts disappearing after reboot
by Guest callie_sunrise- 13 replies
Hi, We are experiencing a problem whereby a user creates a shortcut to a file or folder and saves it to the desktop. The users shuts down the pc at the end of the day. When the users logs in the next morning (or reboots) the shortcuts previously created have now disappeared. This does not happen when a shortcut is created by a software installation. It also does not happen when you create a 'Network Place' in My Network Places and copy the 'shortcut' to the desktop. Has anyone seen or experienced this before? Thank you in advance!!

Blue Screen and Windows Startup Problem
by Guest Chard121- 1 reply
I was lowering the voltage on my processor (not a lot) using my ASUS AI Overclocking program which came with my motherboard, and I suddenly got a blue screen. When I tried restarting my computer Windows XP wouldn't load. I get to the point immediately before the windows icon and loading bar show up, and the screen indefinitely remains black. In an attempt to fix the issue I was going to use my Windows XP CD's repair feature, but as soon as all the "Setup is Loading...." stuff ends I get a blue screen. It says: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and the stop code is: 0x0000000A (0x000000820, 0x00000003, 0x00000001, 0x80809e19) Does anyone know what the problem is, or how…

Re: Windows XP SP2 very slow to boot I am having the same problem. I was using Windows Vista Home Basic, but had too many application compatability issues, so I went back to XP pro. After Service Pack 2, before I even get the windows loading screen, The screen goes all black with a white block loading bar at the bottom. It takes this screen 5-10 minutes to load before I even get the XP pro loading screen. I have tried, defragging, running registry mechanic, made sure all my drivers and windows updates were up to date, and I also formatted my entire hard drive trying to fix this problem. My system specs are as follows: AMD Athlon 64X2 6000 (3.15ghz…

Windows Search Setup
by Guest DaveK- 1 reply

I was cleaning out a few unused processes on my computer and I think I may have stopped something from running which makes the windows search feature work. I tried to re-install it but as a do i get an error saying: "Setup has failed. Make sue terminal Services are enabled before re-running setup" now everything I can find says that terminal Services is for remote desktop access, so why would this need to be enabled to install a search program and where would you find it to enable/disable it anyway? Please help.
