i bought a laptop from dell about 2 years ago and its now time to reinstall windows. all i recieved was a disc from dell that will restore the computer to its original state, but that wasnt good enough. dell is now sending me xp media centre discs and drivers. will i be able to use the same product key that is currently active on my computer? i believe its a 25 letter and number key on a little sticker on the bottom of my laptop...is this true, and can it be used again? thanks

Offline Files not Syncing/Windows Media Player Error (LENGTHY)
by Guest Zakhary- 1 reply

I admit that everything was working and that -I- messed it up. To allow "My Documents" to be shared between two computers, I set one of the computers' (\\zm01) "My Documents" folder to be shared and redefine the other computer's (\\zm02) target to the share name of the "My Documents" folder on \\zm01. It recently came to me that I may wat to restict access since a few people share this home network. So, I tried by disabling easy share and setting permissions, but realized that \\zm02\username could not be given permissions since a common domain doesn't exist. I then changed the share name to include a dolar symbol ($) at the end so that it would be h…

by Guest Carl- 1 reply

I have 5 user accounts on my Windows XP Home computer and they have all been working fine until about a week ago. My sons account is now acting like it it is a brand new account. He gets a USER ENVIRONMENT dialog box with the following message..."Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible cause of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile..." The background screen went to a deafult background instead of the picture he had up and none of his account connections are working. Any ideas as to what file may be corrupt or what I might be able to do to get the account working properly without deleting it? Thanks for …

Question on Windows XP Media Center operating system
by Guest Jim- 7 replies

Several years ago I purchased a new HP laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 as the operating system. I've downloaded the latest security files and service packs but my system always indicates "Media Center Edition 2002 SP3". However, the Microsoft Windows web site talks about a version called XP Media Center Edition 2005. Is this a newer version that must be purchased since I can't seem to upgrade to this edition. TIA

Empty Folders
by Guest miner- 2 replies

I am using Windows XP with SP3 and all recent updates. Also AVG antiviral program and have 4 partitions on my hard drive with one used exclusively for programs. Recently I noticed that almost all my folders were empty in one partition and encountered only one empty folder in an another partition. Otherwise the computer is running well without any problems. Using Acronis I reverted to a backup I had done on Feb 20th wondering whether some recent update or SP3 had caused this problem, but the folders are still empty. Is there any way to remedy this situation or recover the information and does this indicate a hard drive problem? Corrupted software? How c…

Hi all ! I'm trying out the new firefox 3.01 and have found out that this version has an annyoing limit of "one file at a time from one site" ! In other words, if there are like 20 files from a site, and I want to download them all using FireFox 3.01, I have to download the first file, wait until it is finish, before the second file is downloaded, and so on, and so forth !! Is there a way to enable FireFox to download _more_ than one file at the same time from a single site ??? Please help !! Thank you !!

Can't Install Windows XP on a IBM Thinkpad Laptop

Hi all: Trying to do a fresh install on an older Thinkpad Laptop. It's a IBM Thinkpad 2647-AMU with the following specs: PIII 700MHz (256KB), 256MB RAM, 12.0GB HDD, 14.1 TFT 1024x768 LCD, 6x-2.3x DVD drive, 3Com combo Setup hangs with either 35 or 34 minutes to go. It's got to be some hardware issue and I was just wondering if anybody knew offhand what it is. Thanks Tom Young
