Running SLOW 1 2
by Guest Doug- 27 replies
This might not be the place to ask. My computer started running real slow. When I open the task manager the CPU is running 100% all the time. When I look at the processes it shows explorer.exe running about 98% and nothing else is running over 3%. What could be causing the CPU to run so high? I have restarted the computer and the same thing happens. I have not add any hardware or software. XP keeps recreating user profile!
by Guest giancarlo.fazi@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, does anyone know why on certain PC XP sometime keeps recreating the user profile? I mean, a user executes the logon and his current profile is ignored, a new profile is created and obviously all his data disappears! It happens randomly and not so sporadically (I have a user on whom pc it happened 2 times in 3 weeks!) I exclude it depends on "roaming profile" because we dont use roaming profiles ;-) We have a Windows 2000 domain. Any idea? Thanks in advance

MS Word anti virus

Whenever MS Word opens on my pc (WinXPpro and MSOffice pro) it runs a 'virus search', even when I open my pc with my anti-virus software not open! Is there any way to turn this off? I haven't noticed such an event on any other computer I've worked at ,so I don't even know where this feature came from. Thanks, Richard -- Message posted via WindowsKB.com http://www.windowskb.com/Uwe/Forums.aspx/windowsxp/200806/1

Where or how in XP do I get back control of my Function keys? Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard appears to have disabled my function keys in all applications. Example F2 don't edit in Excel, F3 won't "find next" in adobe reader. etc, etc. I removed the Intellipoint program that gives advanced keybaord control. That did not fix it. Suggestion please.

What is sounds like is that you want to perform a series of mouse or keyboard operations on objects in the web page. You didn't mention if cost were no object or was critically restricted. WinRunner will do that but is probably way too pricey for you as it is designed to software test automation. AutoHotkeys might …

My computer doesn't show a certain www site: with IE it keeps loading without end, with Firefox it gives something like (not precisely, sorry): " Wrong redirection. Firefox detected that server redirects the request in the way that makes the completion impossible..." I checked everything about cookies, disabled the Antivirus - no result... The same site with the same internet cable works perfect with another computer. Have you any idea?... Thank you.

After XP repair, can no longer do Windows update
by Guest monica- 3 replies
I have a couple Dell pcs where I did an XP repair. Once it completed, the glitchy problems we had were fixed, so we are happy. However, if we attempt any Windows updates, they download, but all fail. No error message, just says updates didn't install. This also happens whenever we upgrade a pc with Windows 2000 to Windows XP. I've done every Google search imaginable but all recommended solutions don't pertain to our exact situations. So upgrading, reinstalling, or repairing XP seems to disable the actual install of updates. Any help is much appreciated.

Repair Installing with Different Install Disc
by Guest Ted Smith- 0 replies
I bought my copy of XP Pro OEM before SP1 and SP2. As they came along I installed them on top of my old version. Now I have a few programs (one is OE 6) that have been corrupted but still work after a fashion. I would like to do a repair install but my install disc tells me that it can't do it because my Win XP has been modified or upgraded or something like that. But, I have a brand new unopened copy of XP-SP2 OEM that I plan to use to build another system. Can I use that copy to repair the programs on my current system?? If that is possible, would the repair do anything goofy like implant its ID or serial number on top of my current install. Would …

Wireless versus Wired Mouse
by Guest Navyguy- 13 replies
I use to have a wired Microsoft mouse but when it became worn I decided to upgrade to a Logitech laser wireless Mouse. At first it was fine but in recent months it has performed erratically. I have tried changing the settings, restoring it to the default settings and recently updated the drivers but it still acts the same and isn't as smooth as it use to be or as smooth as my wired mouse was. So I'm just wondering is this an inherent problem with wireless mouse's (mice) and would I be better off going back to using a Microsoft wired mouse ? Thanks, Robert

Procedure for Recovering Missing SYSTEM32 Folder
by Guest Will- 4 replies
I posted over many different threads a problem I had on a Windows system where the SYSTEM32 folders suddenly disappeared, taking out the registry with them. I recovered from this situation today as follows. I am including this in a server thread because the recovery procedure would be essentially the same (except for the lack of system restore points with Windows 2003), and I am documenting for posterity. 1) I restored an old backup of the file system to a portable drive. 2) I restore an old backup of the system state to the same drive. 3) I booted the down system with ERD Commander and the portable drive attached. 4) I copied over first the missing …

Change to basic disk or activate the "dynamic disk"?
by Guest lisen- 10 replies

HI, I installed the external USB hard disk, which was pluged into the USB box. but everytime I turned on the electricity and made the hard disk run, I had to "manage the disks" and there are two options "change to basic disk and activate the dynamic disk" What could I do to avoid that operation and use that disk freely? Or could I "activate the dynamic disk" permanently no matter if I turned on/off the USB box? Ps. I have abundance of datas and files on that disk already.

How can I display my PC on my TV?
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 11 replies

I want to display my PC on my TV to show video from the Internet. I set the TV as a second monitor. When I boot the PC, the TV will display the bios screen and the windows startup icon but will not display the welcome screen or the desktop or programs. In PC's display settings, the "identify" button puts a "1" on the monitor and "2" on the TV -- as it should. Equipment: Video Card: GeForce 5500, ports are analog VGA and digital DVI. The DVI port is cabled to monitor -- Viewsonic 912b LCD, 1280x1024. The VGA port is cabled to a wireless sender ---> wireless receiver. The wireless receiver has a composite cable to the TV's video2 port. The TV is a So…

Calling on heavy guns: need help

On my computer WinXP PRO SP3 each action involving any .avi file is causing Data Execution Prevention (DEP) intervention. And it even does not involve openning .avi file. Any click on .avi file (mouse left or right click), action like copying, renaming, anything is invoking DEP and Dr.Watson shutting down the Windows Explorer. It does happen to every .avi file I have on my system and that includes some sample .avi supplied with commercial products. It must be the real .avi file. When I renamed .txt file to .avi file there was not problem with that "new" .avi file. Why my Windows does not like .avi files? My DEP settings are set to default settings: "T…
