"Sync Services.exe" Appliation error when shutting down pc
by Guest computerchallengedcc- 0 replies
Recently installed Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini external drive. Comes with software. Googled & found this: "The process SyncServices or Sync Windows Services belongs to the software Maxtor OneTouch III or Maxtor Manager by Seagate Technology LLC." Never having used an external hard connected to USB ports, I didn't know anything about having to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" & simply unplugged the drive. Ever since, I am getting this error when shutting down my pc. "The instruction at 0X0012e614 refernced memory at 0x00001310 The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program or click on cancel to debug the program. Upper left of the e…

Adobe dialog keeps hanging up computer
by Guest Larry- 5 replies

I have a five year old Dell laptop with Windows XP that someone gave me recently. Whenever you click or right-click on anything, or try to open something, say Word, a dialog appears saying, "configuring [or installing] Adobe 8.1." This dialog box just hangs, and you have to click it several times to get rid of it. Then it comes back again. I went to Add/Remove programs dialog box, and guess what? It's empty, none of the programs on the computer are showing at all. I went to the Adobe folder in the Program Files folder, thinking of simply deleting all the Adobe fiiles. There are two folders in it, one for version 7, and one for version 8, but when I try to…

by Guest lorentdick@yahoo.com- 5 replies
Hi, Does anyone know if there is any type of report I can look at after I run a disk check in XP via Disk Properties->Tools->Check Now... When the scan completes it just displays a message box "Scan complete". That's it (can you think of a more useless message Microsoft?) Please do not suggest Event Viewer, as there is nothing there Thanks in advance

Autorun Shell Commands
by Guest JoMo- 5 replies
Hi, I am having some issues linking a PDF on the root of a cd to the shell command "read me" via the autorun.inf file. The command appears when I right click the CD, and adobe opens but it says it cannot find the file. I have also tried to put %CD%\ in front of the file name with no luck. It seems like Adobe isn't looking at the root of the CD drive, but I cant figure out how to make that happen... Any pointers will be greatly appreciated! ***Code*** [autorun] shell\readme=Read &Me shell\readme\command=AcroRd32.exe Quick_Start_Guide.pdf ***Code*** Thanks in advance! JoMo

Advice on purchasing XP Home
by Guest Bugsy- 24 replies

My computer is a Gateway model # MFATXPNT MDW 500S, 5 years old, but still powerful (or was, anyway). My Windows XP Home crashed (error message "C:\$MFT is corrupt and unreadable), which started immediately after "The Geek Squad" at Best Buy installed a HP printer last week. I do not have the original disks (lost during a move), and Gateway says they no longer have available the "Recovery CDs". Geek Squad says that a new installation of windows XP will cost well over $200.00 and that I should just buy a new computer. They are ADAMANT that THEY did not cause the crash. I am not comfortable with learning VISTA, plus I have heard and read lots of b…

Downgrading VISTA to XP Pro
by Guest Bugsy- 10 replies
I am thinking about purchasing a new computer with VISTA installed and an option to downgrade to Windows XP Pro. Has anyone had actual experience doing this? If so, are there any problems to be anticipated? Is it something a novice can do, or does the downgrade have to be done by a pro? Any other thoughts about using this route to get XP on a new computer? Thanks for any advice.

RyanMV's Switchless installers
by Guest Paul- 1 reply

Has anyone slipstreamed the .Net Framework 1.1 and 2 switchless installers from here? http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/ If you have, does 1.1 include the 1.1 install file, as well as SP1 and the hotfix? Or just SP1 and the hotfix? Or do you have to add the 1.1 file to the slipstreamed CD? This page doesnt tell anyone anything ! And what about NF 2?? Does that include the main install file, as well as the updates, or just the updates? I'm about to SS both of them, but dont wont to waste a cd, if neither dont have the main install for the SP's to install after. Since it probably wont work / install Any info appreciated Thanx

IE7 GPO Proxy issues
by Guest T- 2 replies
Hi, I'm running IE7 on a Win XP Pro SP3 client machine. Running on a new 2008 domain. The XP machine has the 2008 GP client side extentions installed. We normally set up IE to look at a proxy and override the proxy for only sites needed as and when. This is done by going into a GPO and setting up the proxy in the Internet Explorer maintenance. However the proxy override box never has enough space for all the addresses. So this key was set in the group policy Preferences > Registry to replace the key with a set of values. (new to 2008 GPO) Additionally other security permissions are set to disallow access to internet options and preventing use…

domain computers to have same wallpaper - Group Policy
by Guest Paul- 6 replies
Hi all, I am trying to use a Group Policy to set all domain computers desktop wallpaper to the company's logo. Now I have managed to adjust the settings accordingly using the Group Policy Editor in MMC. Problem is that even if I do a "gpudate /force" along with multiple restarts the selected wallpaper does not display. When I go into display settings though the wallpaper I want is actually shown as been the one in use. Now I started messing around and for some strange reason when I change the screen resolution the wallpaper I set via group policy then displays correctly. I have double checked this with other wallpapers as well and the same is true...…

Missing files in Windows Explorer
by Guest Peter- 7 replies

When I look at "C:\Documents and Settings\User" in Windows Explorer on my desktop PC I cannot see the "Local Settings" Sub-directory. If I type the name in the address bar it appears OK. I have selected "Show Hidden Files and folders". I have unticked "Hide protected operating system files". If I view the drive from my laptop via my wireless link the files are there! I'm on XP Pro SP2. I'd be grateful for any ideas, whilst I can clearly work around the problem it's a pain. Peter
