by Guest JeromeBland- 9 replies

Hi, I purchased a Dell 8200 computer in 2003. That computer was stolen from my house in October 2004, however I still have the ORIGINAL XP home edition installation CD and the 25 digit license code. Now it is 2008 and I recently built a home use computer that needs an OS. Question: Can I install and use the Windows XP Home Edition OS, with my license code from the stolen computer, on a computer that I just built? Thanks, Jer B

Windows that won't open
by Guest JMGinDC- 2 replies

Windows XP Prof on 3.5 year old Dell 9200 Inspiron. Have had a progressively worsening issue of windows not opening new screens in Explorer and from My Documents. System seems to be running fine, then the problem starts, I reboot, it works fine for a while, and so the cycle goes. In Explorer I can continue to work in the open window but hyperlinks won't open in a new window, right clicks don't work, etc. Similar thing happens in My Documents; can open that but then can't get into the folders in it. Also strange, very thin vertical purple line appeared mid-screen a few months back. Any ideas? Time for a new computer? Hourly reboots are a pain. Thanks for any help.…

Simple document management?
by Guest jim- 2 replies
What is the easiest way to share documents among a small office (9 people) that forces check-out/check-in? We really need to be sure that only one person at a time is editing each document. Revision history and backups would be nice, but the biggest thing is ease-of-use. I'm not sure of this is something that you can do natively in Windows or if you need a special product to get this capability. If it has to be a product or add-on, something that integrated into Excel, Word and Windows Explorer would be great. Thanks!

Change folder options to show number of files in a folder
by Guest KekoaKonane- 2 replies
I've searched and searched and can't find anything that comes near to what I'm looking for, it's a very simple problem, I've even changed it before but can't for the life of me remember how I did it. Specifially I'm trying to find out what to change to show the amount of files in a folder. For instance, the recycle bin would show 4.0 Gigs if I'd been on a deleting rampage. Or one of my folders might show that I have 554 files in that folder. I can't find help on this and it's very simple I know. I would appreciate anyone's help with this. Thank you!

I am using Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Technical Support has been helping me with my computer. I have been able to send them my Windows Update Log file and my system.nfo file but Microsoft also requested a copy of my registry. When I try and attach the copy of my backup.reg file the Internet resets itself and will not let me attach the registry. Is there any way around this limitation? Finally, I wanted to say that I am really glad the Microsoft-hosted newsgroups have so many thoughtful people.

digital signature does not validate or is not present
by Guest Gordie- 2 replies

I'm fighting a pesky error, that I believe is in XP. System is XP Pro SP3 with all updates. Office 2003 suite is currently installed. I have a retail boxed CD of Office 2007 Home and Student. The first thing that appears when it is loaded is a message: "D:\HomeStudentr.WW\OSETUP.DLL digital signature does not validate or is not present." Click OK and nothing more is done/seen. There are many reports of this problem in the Office 2007 sites, most replies focus on the CD. It is NOT the CD. It works fine on another computer, also I get the same error with this computer and another CD of Office 2007 HSE. It is not the CD reader either. Following some sug…

XP Always Out of Memory
by Guest JSoul Rocks- 13 replies

Here's a strange problem I have. My laptop has 2GB of RAM in it, plenty to run XP. It's a Dell XPS m1210. Especially after waking up after sleep (as well as not), it seems to have "out of memory" issues even though there isn't much open and Windows Task Manager says there is plenty of available RAM. What will happen is that if I have 3 tabs open in IE, for example, if I click on a link to open another window there is a blink and nothing happens. Try to open a folder and either nothing will happen or a new window will open but white and blank. Try to right click on a menu item and either no menu disappears or you'll be missing a lot of the right click menu items n…

I have Windows XP Sp2. I have had this HP computer since new with Windows XP installed. Under my local disk (C:) in the WINDOWS>1386>Compdata file I have more than 100 approx. 1kb folders with a text telling me that; " The currently installed driver for the xxxxx is not compatible with this version of Microsoft Windows.......etc. It is recommended that you uninstall this software before continuing.......etc" The text although similar varies in these folders basically indicating that the driver it refers to is incompatible. As far as I can see I don't have the drivers in my computer and have never had them. I certainly did not install them. Would …

Found an old computer Dell Optiplex GX100 - has a password for bios?
by Guest David D- 4 replies

I found a dell Opitex GX100 computer. It seems to work, but it has a password for the bios...I am trying to format the harddrive as well to put XP on it, but I would like to change the boot sequence. Should I try and flash the bios to erase the password? Also, I am not sure of how much RAM is installed because it is a DELL and it doesn't tell me at start up. I am hoping that getting into the bios will help me with that. Lastly, is there a good FORMAT software for the floppy drive so I can format and then run XP from the CD rom drive to install?

Can Old Restore Points Be Used With New Windows Install?
by Guest Will- 9 replies
I have a massively corrupted Windows XP SP3 installation that may require a new install of Windows. My system restore points are intact in the system information folder. After creating a new install of Windows, is it able to restore Windows' system state using those old restore points that were created with a different install of Windows? It would be an extremely nice feature to have if not. All of my installed software on this system is intact. I really just need to recover the original registry and system32 subtree. -- Will

Problem with screen savers
by Guest Ale- 1 reply

Whenever I install a new screen saver (it happens with all), it will install all of the corrsponding files for that screen saver. If I go to c:\windows\System32 the corresponding scr files are installed and can be executed as well as the C:\Program Files folder corresponding to that screen saver, but it will not be added to the XP Screen Saver list (right click on desktop/Properties/Display Properties/Screen Saver tab/Screen saver drop down list). Is there any way to fix this? Thanks. (My system is a Windows XP Pro SP3 and the issue was still present when it was SP2).
