High CPU usage problem
by Guest Sturdy- 18 replies

Hi all, I have 2 conditions that I have been trying to correct for several months since XP Pro was re-installed (clean). Both conditions seem to occur randomly and I think both conditions may be related. Sometimes occurrences ar minutes apart, other times days apart. 1) The entire computer freezes for about 30-60 seconds cycles, unfreezes for 1-2 minutes then freezes again. There is no visible activity. Mouse et al is dead, no DSL, etc. Usually one or more reboot corrects but this has also occurred at the Win XP splash screen. 2) Taskman CPU usage goes to about 45% for several minutes then returns to normal. Taskman shows occassional spikes but no p…

How do I recover windows
by Guest jasmine999- 5 replies

My daughter wanted to reset her computer to how it was when we bought it. She clicked on the set to factory settings and went to bed. I guess she deleted windows because it says windows system 32 is not available. When we bought her laptop, the original windows cd did not come with it. We made backup cd's as soon as we turned the computer on. Why won't her comuter accept the disc's? It keeps shutting off and will not run the discs. Please help?

multiple cmd windows with distinct properties
by Guest tbone- 1 reply

On my Windows 2000 system, I have 3 shortcuts for command windows - small, large, and huge. Each one is a shortcut to cmd.exe, and each has its own layout and color scheme. This was done by altering the properties, and upon clicking ok, selecting the option that says "Modify shortcut that started this window". I can't seem to get this working on my new Windows XP 64-bit Edition machine. After modifying a shortcut's properties and clicking ok, I choose the similar option, "Save properties for future windows with same title". However, even though I used different shortcuts and thus have different window titles, setting any one changes all of them. Is this feat…

SyncToy failing silently because of long path name (& relatedWindowsFormsParkingWindow shutdown problem)
by Guest prepbgg@googlemail.com- 0 replies

SyncToy failing silently because of long path name (& relatedWindowsFormsParkingWindow shutdown problem) I have SyncToy (version 1.2.0.75) set to run "All Folder Pairs" automatically from a Scheduled task. I experienced three sets of symptoms: 1. The SyncToy automatic backup stopped working 2. On occasions, SyncToy would not start up when I tried to run it - no errors were reported, the window simply failed to open. 3. On occasions, when I tried to shut down Windows XP, the shutdown process would hang (fail) with a WindowsFormsParkingWindow error message. I believe that all three sets of symptoms were caused by one problem, namely that the path …

Page file location and size?
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 8 replies

I have two 750 GB drives on this Quad Core (2.66 GHz), 4 GB PC (running under XP Pro). I have just one Page file, on the non-OS drive. Its Properties are currently: Recommended: 4989 MB Currently allocated: 4080 MB Does that look OK please? Am I right that - performance might be marginally better by keeping the page file off the OS drive? - 4 GB is more than generous for the size, despite the recommendation of 5 GB? - a fixed size is probably better than a varying one? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK

Is there a Newsgroup on the microsoft.public.windowsxp newsgroups that I can subscribe to the same as, or similar to, as this site on the old Web-based Windows XP Newsgroups at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx I found this site most useful, but could not find it or one similar on the msnews.microsoft.com selection of newsgroups to subscribe to. Maybe I missed it. System: Acer 2450 laptop Windows XP - Home - SP3 Explorer 7 using OE for newsreader Thanks!

Hotfix didn't install, no failure prompt
by Guest Steven- 7 replies

Hi everyone, Ref. windowsxp-kb822603-x86-enu.exe sits now in my C:\WINDOWS folder. Apparrently due to failed/partial install, ref. it doesn't list in either add-remove progs or in the registry as installed. Could it be a result of my OEM XHP OS (version 2002, SP2) doesn't have SP1 installed and as the hotfix's applies to systems w/SP1 installed, this's why it failed to install? I'm now uncertain as to what to do about the failed and/or partial install. -- My best to all and happ-e-trails, Steven

Appearances - TextLabel unalterable
by Guest Petersrin- 0 replies
XP HOME on 3GB DDR 400, Athlon X2, GeForce 8600 GT I've been working on making my system a dark theme via the appearance panel. However, certain parts of the GUI seem unalterable: Text Label items (at least, that is what they'd be reffered to as in VB). So, the background of a window will be dark, and there will be a nice little section/container present without the ability to change its text color from black, hence making the dark background unusable. Is there a way around this? (ie. registry, changing the msstyle file, etc)... see image: http://www.experts-exchange.com/images/t36511/trouble.jpg

Command Prompt Here Help?
by Guest aimee4ever- 16 replies

Sorry if this happens to be in the wrong forum. Please direct me to the right one if that's the case. I installed Winrar earlier today and when I right clicked on the rar files, I was missing the extract menu options. "Extract here, extract all." That kind of menu. I searched on google to see if there was a resolution to this. I found this website: 'Shell integration and Program Installations on 64-bit Windows (XP and 2003 x64 Editions).' (http://www.geekswithblogs.net/bpaddock/archive/2005/04/02/28023.aspx) It provided some sort of help. I tried it and in the file I downloaded from this website was a CommandHere registry file. I followed the instructions, but…

Initial Boot - excessive disk access
by Guest +Bob+- 2 replies

When I booted today, my system was busy. Very busy. Didn't even finish rendering the desktop icons. Drive light on full time. This lasted for five minutes So, I started procexp and took a look. Explorer itself seemed to be sucking at least 20% of the CPU. It was the only program getting significant CPU time. The severe disk access was not showing up as reads or writes. There was one csrss.exe and one svchost.exe process were steadily doing repetitive IO, about one read every second each, but that continues now and has no impact. They each took about 5% of CPU on and off. Also, the svchost process had a sub/call running under it that was "wu.....exe" tha…
