My Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop won't boot after applying the MS08-030 update. Windows gets stuck at the "starting up" screen. I replaced bthport.sys with the old file from the uninstall folder, but that didn't help. Using a BartPE CD, I was able to edit the registry to turn on verbose status messages during boot. Now I can see what's happening (not much). XP hangs while starting up WLNOTIFY. I see periodic disk activity, but I've seen that before (something about sensing the DVD drive). I've let it sit for over 20 minutes; still no boot. I read about the trojan WINOTIFY and made sure I have the real thing. I also copied a backup from dllcache, but still no j…

Error warning when shutting down pc
by Guest computerchallengedcc- 5 replies

XP210 pc- SP3 4 gig RAM This flashes on the screen too fast for me to read/write down all the information. It begins with "the instruction at 0X0012e614-------------could not be read"... The last part says something about debug, but closes too fast for me to read the entire thing. I was advised to review the event logs, but that is really doesn't work for me since I don't have a clue what I am reading when I see a couple of yellow warnings in the 'system' log file. I have tried changing the settings in my computer/properties/advanced/ settings for startup & recovery to longer than the 30 seconds it shows... thinking that would give me more time to…

FYI: Restoring DMA access on an "IDE ATA/ATAPI controller"
by Guest witan- 2 replies

The main harddrive on my computer (running Windows-XP Pro, now SP3) had slipped to PIO mode. Microsoft support information at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817472 ("IDE ATA and ATAPI disks use PIO mode after multiple time-out or CRC errors occur") did not give me much joy. A google search took me to http://winhlp.com/node/10 and then on to the vbscript, http://winhlp.com/tools/resetdma.vbs. I ran the vbscript -- with a little trepidation, but my hard disk, Seagate ATA 160GB, was already agonizingly slow. On reboot I found that Ultra DMA Mode 5 has been restored, and my disk is shutting down, rebooting, hibernating, resuming, etc. at near normal speed. I tho…

LAN disable - stops responding
by Guest RJK- 4 replies

Any idea why my XP LAN connection to my Linksys WAG354G (adsl modem-router-wireless), becomes unresponsive when I right-click "Local Area connection" in System Tray ? ...this problem recently appeared after adjusting some (seemingly :-) unrelated bios settings. Pondering on recent "changes" that could have caused it, ...the most recent "adjustment" was to disable the Gaming Port in bios. So I went back into bios and "enabled" it, and the above described effect / problem with LAN connection goes away. ...so why would the gaming port bios switch cause a problem with LAN connection to my router ? Possibly of relevance :- I've noticed that when XP (Ho…

Hi all, New here, searched a bit, no on-point posts to be had ... otherwise simple question: I'm running Win XP Pro (sp2) on a basic 250gb western digital drive. Had no problems. It's connected via SATA (SATA power as well). Yesterday I plugged in a second hard drive, a 750gb Samsung. SATA drive w/ SATA power. BIOS sees both hard drives. Device Manager shows 2 hard drives. Windows explorer doesn't ("my computer") show the newer drive, the 750. I can uninstall the 750 from device manager, reboot, and let windows install, but i still can't actually see the drive and work with it. I was hoping to be able to at least see it and format it and then use it…

Hi all, Yesterday, I had a small problem opening up a Notepad file. I double-clicked it and it showed up in the Taskbar but it would not maximize on the screen. It still does that today, as does my website program, Cutesite Builder. All other programs open up fine from the Taskbar. I am running Windows XP with SP2. Any ideas what might cause this? Thanks, Stacy

Persistent Error Message
by Guest RLBobH- 1 reply

I run 2 computers, both connected to a printer, one via wireless connection through the wireless hub that the printer is connected to. I had tried to print without having the printer activated, and go an error message "PrintServer connect fail". I turned on the printer, and am able to print just as before. But the error message persists, whether I "X" it out, or press "OK". How do I get rid of this persistent error message. I use Windows XP media edition.

Mouse Pointer
by Guest JohnD- 1 reply

On two of my PC's the mouse pointer has started to behave as if it has a mind of its own. While moving it around, it will suddenly jump to some place off the screen. I have checked the Hardware Manager and there are no conflicts. I changed the mice from PS2 to USB and it made no difference. Any ideas, anyone? Using XP Pro with SP3, by the way.

x64 for Autodesk Inventor - What to watch for???
by Guest infiniteMPG- 0 replies
We are looking at upgrading our engineering workstations (generally Xeon 2.80GHz w/4Gb RAM upgrading to 6 or 8Gb with NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 video) to Windows XP Pro x64. The main reason is to get better performance from Autodesk Inventor 2009 (we're currently running IV11). One issue we've already seen is that the add-ons we use in Inventor (iProperty Wizard, etc) will not function under x64 Inventor. A big hit but we're seeing what we can do about that. Our other question is we run a lot more then just Inventor. We run the full Office suite of products, AutoCAD, Visio, FastLook, Adobe, and several VB6 free standing apps to name a few. Does anyone know wh…

I have (legal :-) XP on a CD. However, it's not a bootable XP CD, it's a CD with all the setup and cab programs that originally ran with a script. I need to do a repair installation. Is there some way to create a bootable CD that will do a "repair" using my XP cabs & setup programs, etc from the installed OS? Thanks,

An issue that I thought would be addressed with XP; Excel retains old external references in the Applications.Names group and the files grow to unreasonable sizes. Has anyone had success in deleting these names with a VB program?

Re: beep every minute
by Guest Miles- 1 reply

Re: beep every minute I was trying to install some software and couldn't, so I used msconfig to turn off a bunch of stuff temporarily. That didn't help. Anyway, when I put msconfig back to normal, the computer was messed up. Weird. Most of the services were turned off and I had no record of which services I had been using. So I guessed at turning on services and everything seems to be running now. Did you ever see msconfig act like that before? Well, that's how I caused this alert sound problem to start. I may have some service running that I don't need that is doing this. Or it could be one of my protection programs such as NIS 2008, etc. Perhaps I s…

no monitor after resume from standby
by Guest rac8006- 1 reply

I've had a problem where the monitor stays in standby mode when I resume the computer using XP Pro SP2. I've tried two different video cards. The only way to get the system back is to pull the power cord. I've gone so far as to remove the video card and put it into a different system and it works fine. When I put it back into the failed system it still fails. Once I pull the power cord wait 5 seconds and put the cord back in the system it boots up fine. Any itdeas whats going on? RAC

Encryption removal
by Guest Richard- 13 replies

I have an Excel file that I encrypted. I wish to remove the encryption. After encrytion of this file, I was required by Dell to reload my OS (Windows XP SP2) on my home computer due to a problem they could not otherwise solve. Prior to the reload I had copied the Excel file to an external drive. After bringing my computer back up, I find I cannot open the Excel file because "The document may be read-only or encrypted". It's not read-only, but it was/is encrypted. Since I can't access it, I attempted to remove the encryption via "Properties, Attributes (Advanced)" and removing the check mark from "Encrypt contents to secure data". I tried to apply this b…

Question regarding SP 1 and SP 2
by Guest Winston 3456- 2 replies

I have a CIO attempting to tell me that at the time Microsoft was still supporting SP 1 with hot fixes that SP 1 and SP 2 were identical. I believe that there are some differences between them, including WPA support as well as other security features that are unique to SP 2. Assuming we were looking in 2006, am I correct that SP 2 was different that SP 1?
