Moving the OS to another partition.
by Guest bhk- 4 replies

I wish to move the XP Home OS from one partition on disk 0 to the primary partition on disk 1. Is there a simple way of doing this or does one have to re-install again from scratch, please? By way of explanation, the computer in question is an old one with a small 12GB HD and was supplied with Win 98 installed on C drive. Four years ago I bought a retail XP disk and attempted to do a clean install. For some reason it would not install on C drive over the original OS but installed itself on a logical partition D resulting in a dual boot system. Now D partition is nearly full and there is little room for movement. There is a second 80GB HD installed - conne…

CAble Modem/Speed
by Guest Dan R- 7 replies

I recently upgaded my service to a 20 Mbps cable speed through my provider. Realizing my old modem was only DOCSIS 1.0 compatible, I went out and got a new Motorola SB5101 modem than can handle DOCSIS 2.0 and upstream speeds of 30 Mbps. I can only seem to get a maximum speed of 7.2 Mbps. The cable company says an acceptable level should be around 12 Mbps, and after calls to their tech support line they cannot seem to figure out why I can't connect at a minimum 12 Mbps. They said the connection is excellent with no packet loss. I do have a router, but when I hook the cable modem directly to the computer it gives me the same max speed of 7.2 Mbps. I also tu…

Turning off auto-installation of updates when shutting down comput
by Guest Moxieman- 6 replies

Two Questions; Background: I like to manually search for, select, and install updates. Somehow, XP Home Edition -- SP3, has decided that it will automatically download updates and then tells me it will automatically install them unless I use a particular shut-down link when I shut down. I turned off the automatic download feature in Security Center. Q1. Where does XP Home Ed. store downloaded updates so I can eliminate these extra updates I don't want? Q2. How can I get rid of this shut-down screen that wants to install updates on shut-down unless I click on a particular shut-down link? I don't mind having the option, but I do mind not being able…

Something has changed in the configuration of Explorer on my machine. When I click on a _folder_ in the right hand window of Explorer, a Search Results report window opens. Why is this? This is a recent development. When I clicked on a folder in the right hand Explorer window In the past, Explorer opened the folder and displayed all the folders and file in it in the right hand window. John Wirt

My Win'XP instatalation disk no longer works. I get to the end of the disk and no changes have been made to the installation. The important thing I have noticed: 1. The term 'Deleting Folder ??" now takes place for about 10 minutes. This is new. This is followed by a few minutes of "Creating File", which is usual. Please help! Is there any free software which is easy to use and allows you to edit and manipulate (make the footage go faster/slower/repeat movements etc) video clips with the finished product being able to upload onto youtube?

My mate has been given a PC which has a foreign language installed..looks like french...plus he doesn't know the password to login...It came with the XP install CD (in french !). and licence key ..So on trying to do an new install all the initial boot screen stuff is in french as well. Would it be true to say that its ok to boot this PC off his existing PC's XP Home installation CD (an english version) to do a clean install but actually put in the licence key for the french version ?...you get my drift ? Thanks in advance

Windows XP Computer won't boot
by Guest 920jeff- 1 reply

I'm still having problems with this computer. It is running Windows XP Home Edition. Originally, I got an error message saying, "NTLDR: > Fatal error 256 reading boot.ini. I put the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive, and booted it from that. Then I did a repair installation that I thought would fix the problem, leaving all the data and apps intact. After finishing this repair install, the computer still won't boot. There is not error message this time; it just cycles the boot sequence over and over without loading windows. Any suggestions on what the next step might be? Thanks for the previous responses from last week and for any new help …

Cannot see all already mapped network drives in My Computer
by Guest Bobson- 0 replies

Hi, I just experience some little trouble with XP and mapped network drives. One of the clients is running SP2 and mapped with 2003 server folders by Logon scripts. They both are domained. The user tried to access several mapped drives, but she could nto see any in my computer. Try to access them by typing the drive letters in "Start" "Run" but result is the same. When I tried to "disconnect" them, it is so wierd that you could see all the "connected" and "mapped" drive there. ALso, there are two ways to access to the network drives, the first is to open up any applications and go to use the Open. You will see all them there. The second way is to d…

\$Extend\$UsnJrnl [Excess Allocation]
by Guest Pseu- 3 replies

Hello, Software: Windows XP Media Center Edition [sP 3]. When I look at the Diskeeper Pro Premier 2008 job report for my āCā drive [it never appears in the āDā drive report] it shows a defragmented file called \$Extend\$UsnJrnl [Excess Allocation]; this file increases in size on a daily basis. I found a so-called fix, which was to type in the run command box "fsutil usn deletejournal /D C:" without quotation marks, and then reboot. However, \$Extend\$UsnJrnl [Excess Allocation] begins to grow again immediately! If I understand correctly, this problem may have something to do with the indexing service, even though I have never enabled it. Any help…
