Calling a batch file from context menu
by Guest ShadowTek- 2 replies
I would like to create an entry in the context menu that will pass a file of any type or a group of files of any type along to a batch file. I don't really know that much about editing the registry, but I am guessing that I have to create something in "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* \shellex\ContextMenuHandlers", and make it reference the batch file in some way.

laptop/xp/shutdown problem
by Guest onarock- 18 replies

I have tried to find an answer to this question since early Dec. My laptop (XP) takes forever to shut down.....not the typical shut down problem.... When i click start, and then click turn off computer.....it can take anywhere from 5 to 10 min. before the choices of how u want to shut down appears on the screen........and then it takes quite awhile after you click on shut down... But, if i unplug my laptop, so it is battery powered, it is instantaneous......and a little time to shut down after clicking on the shut down button...... why is this......I know this is a big hint as to what the problem is, but i don't understand it, and can't think of an…

Hi, i'm developing a software for windows xp that will have an option to turn off the monitor i found one way to do that by changing the refresh rate of the monitor to unsupported refresh rate, but this way is not good because some monitor supports this mode and some not. i sure that there is another way because in windows there is an option to turn off the monitor after x minutes, so what is the API for this operation?

Using Command Lines in Windows
by Guest Alice Wei- 8 replies
Hi, I have been using the OS system a lot more in command line environments, and now I have to use Windows to do this. I wonder if anyone could tell me how I can change the directory when I am in the command line environment. My home directory prompts a different drive number when I open up the shell, and it is not a C. The files I need to run are all in C drive. Is there some way I can do something like cd in Windows? Thanks in advance.

Problem with replacing missing DLL file.
by Guest brett.theriault- 3 replies
I have just gotten a new setup, and when I went to uninstall the various Asus utilities that came with, I started getting a problem on boot. services.exe can't run, because it's missing MSVCP60.dll. Can't boot to anything, even safe mode shows the error and then a blank screen. That computer is running XP Pro, and to try and replace the file, I took out the hard drive, hooked it up to this computer (running XP Home), downloaded the DLL file from the internet, and tried to replace it in my system32 folder. Only problem is, everytime I try to boot from the affected hard drive, it seems to have deleted the newly replaced MSVCP60.dll. I hadn't done a b…

folder redirection of C:\WINDOWS\Installer
by Guest hjacobson- 0 replies
I'm configuring an Asus eeePC, 4 GB SSD (C:) and 8 GB SDHC (D:). The system sees both as fixed drives. I'm working to remove folders from the small C: drive to the much larger D: drive. Using sysinternals JUNCTION.exe I've created symbolic links, to wit: C:\WINDOWS\Installer --> D:\WINDOWS\Installer C:\MSOCache --> D:\MSOCache The re-directed folders work OK when the OS (XP w SP3) handles requests for existing files. However I've witnessed one MSI Installer installation where the symbolic link C:\WINDOWS\Installer is removed and replaced with a folder then populated with the app's .msi installation database file. I've spent several fruitless ho…

Moving OS settings to a new computer.
by Guest Bob Day- 1 reply

Using Windows XP on high end stand along Dell Optiplexes… We configure the XP OS for our purposes (such as how the folders look, what is in the start menu, etc.) I assume this OS configuration information is containted in a file some where. It would be much easier to copy that file from a configured system to a new system. 1) Is this information contained in a file that can be copied to a new OS? If so, what are the details on that file. 2) Is there a utility that does this? We have tried some untilities designed to copy your settings when you buy a new computer, but with limited results. Since all we want are the OS settings, and they generall…

Re: Windows Defender Defenition 1.35.716.0 failed to install. [Crossposted to Windows Update, WinXP General, and Security newsgroups] I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Users may encounter this problem when updating Defender via Automatic Update, Windows Update, or from within Defender (Check for updates function). NB: Defender will NOT be happy and its "Alert!" icon will continue to appear in Notification Area until an update is successfully installed. This does NOT mean that Defender is not working/protecting your machine. I have alerted MS and the Defender team to this apparent bug via private channels. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bea…

Re: Computer Crashed
by Guest gjmarks- 3 replies

Re: Computer Crashed My Computer crashed last week. I took it to Staples where they did a diagnostic test and determined the motherboard is dying. I spent a little over $200 back in December to fix another problem and just spent $55.00 for this test. The tech person suggested they can send it out to have the mother board replaced and the rest would be checked and replaced all new parts if necessary and this would cost $250.00 total including all necesary parts and shippping back and forth. The computer is about five years old and has xp home edition. He told me that Microsoft was going to keep servicing XP until 2014. I had heard it was stopping …

Just wondering if an Windows Update might be causing the following problem; Just reinstalled XP and have finished taking all the updates... now when you go to "Restart" the computer it hangs at 'Windows is shutting' and will not restart. No problems with normal "Shutdown" Shut downs correctly and then turns back on normally. Any known issues with possibly one of the updates that might cause this "Restart" issue. Sincerely would appreciate any suggestions. Many Thanks!!! MAK

Windows Explorer Keyboard Navigation
by Guest Seilen- 11 replies

Ok, so my old login profile got corrupted, and I made a new one and copied over what I could from the old profile. I've had to fix a lot of settings, but one I can't seem to fix is for Windows Explorer. Before, whenever I opened an explorer window (say, My Computer for example) the file browser would be selected by default and I could type to navigate immediately (I could type L for Local Hard drive, or M for My Documents). But now, I have to click on the file area of the window to select it first before I can navigate by typing like that. Does anyone know how to fix this? -- Seilen

Telnet Server Problem

Hi, I am trying to execute some remote scripts through telnet, and I did U:> http://www.mysite.com/calculate.php This doesn't work though. This is what it brought back: 'http' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I then tried to telnet it, and then found out that it brought back Could not open connection to the host, on post 23: Connect failed. I had both servers, the local and the remote with port 23 opened on TCP. Could there be anything I missed? Thanks in advance.
