IE7 Instant Search Box Gone
by Guest Jp- 2 replies

Some how I've managed to loss my instant search box in the top right hand corner of IE. Can someone help me get it back? I don't want to download a toolbar program I prefer to use the IE search box. I've checked Internet Options to see if I can restore it, nothing there. All they have is a "change search defaults" where you can only change search providers. Any help would be great. I'm using XP Pro with SP2 Thanks

Security update 951376
by Guest witan- 3 replies

Two days ago, (20 June) an alert appeared on my systray about a security update. I have downloaded and installed the update, "951376". AFAIK, these security updates are usually published on the second Tuesday of every month, but this one (951376) was done on 19 June. Was this a very urgent problem? I shall like to have more details about this update. Thanks

Viewing updates before installing them
by Guest XP Update installs- 6 replies
I just love windows XP and the automatic download. However, I wish to do the install at my request. I have the button checked for the automatic download and install at my request, but I would like to know ahead of time what I'm installing. Is there a way I can see what is being downloading before I click the Install ? I keep hearing horror stories about SP3 and do not want to install it. I'm currently running SP2 with no problems. How can I be sure that I don't install SP3 by mistake. Thanks

Low virtual memory warning
by Guest Larc- 1 reply
I occasionally get a warning that my virtual memory is low on a system with WinXP Pro SP3. I don't see how that's possible. Min of 2MB and max of 50MB is set for drive C, and min of 50MB with max of 1GB is set for drive D (separate HDD as MS suggests). XP has never even created a page file on C, and the one on D is only about 51MB. Both HDDs check out A-OK. In the two years this computer has been running with that same setup, there was never once a low virtual memory warning until now. Coincidentally, the exact same thing recently started happening with a friend's WinXP Home SP3 system. His virtual memory setup is similar to mine. Any ideas? Larc

Re: Rauha olkoon sielullesi. i am using a sony vaio laptop and use a USB saitek eclipse keyboard to play my games on my tv. all of a sudden without any warning.. (i had gone to make a cup of tea after an uneventful mornings work) my keyboard has got a mind of its own. if it is plugged in, i get it typing random letters.. when i came back to it, i found 49 search screens open. nothing was in the search though. i wondered if it might be some kind of virus, but it doesn't seem to do anything really harmful, and when i take the keyboard out the problems stop. i tried the keyboard in my brothers computer and it behaves properly. I think this is a software issue, but this uses woindows driv…

'ask' in XP
by Guest someone watching- 8 replies

In the old DOS days I used a program called 'ASK' in batch files which allowed me to select a response to a question. According to the answer (eg, Y/N) the batch file would then branch (goto to the appropriate label) according to the answer. Does XP have an equivalent? If so, is there also a help file you can point me to for syntax and errorlevel information? Thanks Vic

Question about Windows XP Service Pack 2
by Guest James- 7 replies
I run Windows XP Professional. I have never installed Service Pack 2, because I don't have any problems with my OS, and because I have heard dozens of stories of people having problem immediately after downloaded this update. What is the concensus now ? Do the great majority of people download this update with no problems whatsoever ? I just tried to update to the current version of AVG, but it says it will not work on my OS until I do this update. Is Service Pack 2 known to cause problems ?? Thanks !! James

Install XP on blank partition on Vista machine
by Guest Derek Harvey- 7 replies

Hi Folks, Can anyone help with this, please? I have read various help files on setting up a dual boot with XP installed into a separate partition on a system with Vista pre-installed. The system is a Medion system with SCSI internals, 3Gb RAM and Intel Quad processor. Not sure what details are relevant to this problem . I have created a blank partition using Paragon Hard Disk Manager, formatted NTFS version 3.01 (as it was). I have not re-formatted it, perhaps I should. I hide the Vista partition and make it Inactive and the new one active. Now try booting from XP Pro (OEM) CD: I am NOT offered a choice of partition but I assume it is the now only active p…

Hibernation not working even with SP3
by Guest Edward- 3 replies

When trying to hibernate, about 50% of the time I get the classic error "Insufficient resources to complete the API" after upgrading from 2GB to 4GB of RAM. The whole 4GB isn't even accessible (only 3.25GB) and I thought this issue was fixed long ago by hotfixes 330909 (included in SP2) and 909095 (included in SP3). The comments on 909095 suggest that Microsoft can't be bothered to fix the problem properly - "Note It is still possible to experience a hibernation problem after you install this fix if the memory becomes highly fragmented. The speed at which this problem manifests is dependent on the software that you run and your particular usage mo…

Cannot Boot Recovery Console Windows XP
by Guest Will- 10 replies

Starting today I turn on a Windows XP Media Center home computer and I get a message that it cannot boot because "<Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll" is missing. At first I thought I had a simple disk error recoverable by CHKDSK, so I booted recovery console and ran CHKDSK /R, which corrected unspecified errors on the disk. Rebooting I get the same error. I then noticed that when I go to recovery console there is no prompt for administrator password. I tried the LOGON command with no arguments and it simply returns the recovery console boot prompt. All attempts to change into a folder on the boot volume get "Access is Denied" So NTFS keeps me lock…

Win XP hanging when I go to "My Computer"
by Guest Susan Trott- 1 reply

Our XP workstation running SP 2 has started slowing significantly since the last update. Today it hangs when we go to My Computer, but it doesn't when I launch other software. Last week it started having difficulty with 51% memory usage and I was unable to determine what was taking up the memory. We have 4GB memory on the system, running a 500GB OS drive on a P4 Duo Core 2 system. This workstation serves as our peer-to-peer file server and has three data drives all 500 GB as well as an outboard 500GB Maxtor drive for backups. We have had a number of problems with this machine - including hard drive suddenly failing for no reason. Could all this be related? …

Rebooting when playing mod-MPEG or DV files
by Guest TheMooseArmy- 1 reply

I’ve recently had problems with accessing DV and/or probably MPEG-Files (The special .mod format used by JVC DVD-Camcorders) either by Windows, or by Vegas 8. When I’m loading my project file with Vegas, it will freeze and then immediately reboot when it is accessing the video files (only DV files, but there are MPEG-files in the same folder; I’ve had problems working with those before). The reboot cannot be prevented. If I had opened the folder with Windows Explorer, it did the same – freeze and restart. Just after de-Installing MainConcept DV Codec, I could go and see the files; but trying to play one would result in a restart again. Then I installe…
