Downloaded Program Files

I had a look at the DPF folder through 'View Objects? and found 4 entries damaged. Twoi refer to Symantec which I do not use but may have done an online scan in the past; the others were fro Microsoft: Security/controls/sass and the other to do with the the update. Although I repaired them I wonder why they got damaged. I am pretty certain I have no viruses at the present. Then, can I delete the Symanted ones? Directly from the folder, or is it better through HijackThis? Thank you JB

How to clone a hard disk ?
by Guest RJK- 16 replies

I thought I'd try a route different to ghosting C:\ out to a USB hd, and then restoring that image onto a new hd, i.e. booting from Norton 9.0 Ghost bootable cd 'cause is slowish. So I tried the "Copy drive" on the Norton Ghost 9.0 windows interface, to "copy drive" C:\ on hd0 to hd1's unallocated space (both SATA hd's). On the options screen I ticked "Set drive Active" (for booting OS) ....there's a radio button in Primary Partition. Drive Letter is set to None, 'cause C:\ is unavailable ? ....and I put a tick in "Copy MBR" ....now I left it "copying", and when I returned, the XP screensaver was on but, I don't think it had rebooted, and I dutifully …

Why Can't I Sign In to Windows Vista Community?
by Guest XRaySpeX- 7 replies

I have a NET Passport and can, and always have, successfully Sign In to the Windows XP Newsgroups. However, when I want to ask a question in the Windows Vista Community it fails to Sign me in or post a New Question. All it does is return to the same page after a long delay, with me still Signed Out. Sometimes, usually on the 1st attempt of the session, it does display the Login page but ignores it; more often it does absolutely nothing.

Avoid SP3 reminder?
by Guest RasVed- 6 replies

Hi. I have software which is not compatible with SP3, and hence this service pack is not a usuable solution for me. I'm still interesseted in reminders about new updates, which can be installed at SP2, so my question is: How can I tell automatic update to ignore SP3 and only present all other updates to me? As it is now, I constantly get pop-up messages, that Automatic Update wants to install SP3... Further more I have a yellow exclamation mark in my task bar, which makes both me and other users nervous, and make me miss other important updates...

by Guest Sunny- 13 replies

Hi, A Motherboard failure that took out the CPU and one hard drive resulted in: A new Motherboard, CPU and Hard drives with WinXP SP2 ghosted from my old hard drive. Things seem to be OK, but for : 1. Win Update site scans my PC and after offering SP3 (refused) : a. "Review other updates" b. "Need to download/install latest version of update" c. "Update Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 failed to update" Any attempt to review my update history gets me nowhere. (I read that MSI.DLL Ver 3.1.4000.1823 was replaced by Ver 3.1.4000.2435 (Feb 2005) but the version I have is 3.0.3790.2180 which seems a bit old) I have downloaded the latest ver of MSI 3…

Safe to delete shortcut files in Recent folder?
by Guest Markkk- 3 replies

In my Documents and Settings/Owner folder, there’s a folder called Recent, which contains several hundred .lnk files with names matching files in the My Documents folder. They are identified as shortcuts, but I haven’t knowingly created them, so why are they there and can I safely delete them? The icon for the Recent folder is different than other folder icons in having a clock on it, so it may indicate that its contents have time limits on them, but some of the .lnk files are 3 years old, which may mean I have to manually delete them to clean up unused files. Is that true?
