Help! Earthlink Uninstall Killed Dial-Up Communication
by Guest C. Collings- 6 replies
My mother is running a Dell PC with Windows MCE 2005 w/ IE 6. Shortly after buying her this new machine, her ISP of 6 years was sold to Earthlink. Consequently, her 1-yr prepaid internet service went with it. When her prepaid service was about to expire, I set her up with service from PeoplePC. The Earthlink and PeoplePC software kept fighting for control, so I disable all of the Earthlink software from executing -- problem solved. So, a few months later, the PeoplePC homepage occasionally doesn't load properly - too much scripting I think. She calls me PeoplePC for Tech support rather me (default Tech support). PeoplePC tells here she must hav…

Trouble with Sizing of Everything.
by Guest Lauren- 2 replies
I just started having trouble with the size of all the icons, toolbars, windows, etc. on my computer. I restarted my computer one day because I had installed updates and had to, and then when I logged in, all of a sudden, the screen went blank, and everything, other than the background, got way smaller. The screen resolution and background remain exactly the same, though. I tried turning off and then turning on my computer again, but it didn't work. The login screen has the same problem, too. How do I fix this?

netman.dll in svchost.exe 1356 using up CPU
by Guest J- 0 replies
I did a "repair" of Windows XP Pro and then downloaded SP3. I then noticed my CPU's at 100% every 15 to 30 seconds for about 4 seconds. I downloaded Process Explorer and found that it was occuring within svchost.exe. I then went to Services and began stopping/pausing the Services while watching the effect on the CPU usage. When I stopped Network Connections (Netman, c:windows/system32/netman.dll), it stopped the CPU usage spikes. I'm worried about what this will affect by stopping this service. I do use a wireless network when at home and file and print share. Will this be affected? Can someone recommend a better fix or explain why this was causing …

file extension will not associate with a program
by Guest Nathan- 0 replies
I'm trying to set up a file extension to be associated with a software program on my machine. When I go into Folder Options, the program's file extension is not listed. I add it. When I try to associate it with the right software, it does not recognize it, even though I am drilling down in my programs folder to the exe file for the program. The software I'm trying to use is not even listed in the Programs list even though it is on the computer (and I can open it). Why is this doing this?

windows explorer mp3 bit rate error
by Guest Flynn- 0 replies
I have a USB hard drive connected to my laptop. When I examine files on the drive, it shows mp3 bit rates as being very high, e.g., 600 kbps. When I examine the same files on another computer, they show the correct bit rate, e.g., 360 kbps. Any ideas on why the files come up with a higher bit rate on the laptop (XP Home Edition) than on my other computers?

Acronis Image - Dual Boot
by Guest KDawg44- 5 replies
Hi, We use Acronis to image PC's. I need to set up a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu. I would like to just deploy the image using Acronis. Is there a way to set up a partitions and to put the XP image on one but leave another partition for me to put Ubuntu on? The image was NOT set up this way, it takes all the unpartitioned space on the boot drive. Short of creating a new image or adding another hard drive, is there an easy way around this? Thanks. Kevin

Catch 22 - Activation vs Blue Screen
by Guest Chris White- 7 replies

I posted on my problem a few days ago, but I've started a new thread since the circumstanses have changed a bit. If I find a solution I will post it to both threads. I put a new motherboard/CPU/memory/OnboardGPU in an Emachines computer. When I booted it Blue Screened. I went to Safe Mode and installed the new drivers(I did not remove the old drivers first and I think this was my problem). I've done a Repair, but still Blue Screening. And when I try to boot to Safe Mode, it tells me I have to Activate and I cannot do that in Safe Mode. There are no BIOS updates. Is there something I can do with the Recovery Console to try and get rid of the ol…

Winxs SP3 creating boot error
by Guest jktan99- 2 replies
Ever since I upgraded my xp to SP3, I often got problem logging in. It starts okay, key in the password, the desktop looks okay (wallpaper is there, desktop icons are pretty much okay (some not properly shown), but the status bar is blue and it's frozen. I waited for a while, nothing happens. So, I have to press the reset button. The strange thing, when it restarts, it doesn't say "windows not properly closed". It just went to a normal boot screen. Now, it may take 1 reset, but it could also take as many as 6 - 7 resets, to finally make it work. Sometimes, I just gave up, turn off the PC and waited for 15-30 minutes before I turn it back on. This is…

HWAPI.exe using excessive cpu.
by Guest snerdly- 14 replies

Can someone help me understand what HWAPI.exe is? Sometimes when I come out of standby this bugger takes up around 80% of my processor for 5 to 10 mins. I thought I had a link for a site that explained what all Programs under XP were but the link must not be there any more. Is there a site that has a list of XP programs, what they do & if they can be removed? -- Regards snerdly
