Can I use UK-version of XP Pro in the USA?
by Guest Anabella- 7 replies

I recently purchased a fully sealed retail box of Windows XP Pro from a seller online only to find out that it is a UK-version, although made in the US. (E85-02667) I've doublechecked the COA and everything looks legitimate according to the Microsoft "How to Tell" website, including the holographic ribbon under the port hole. I have not opened up the package yet to look at the CD but the box is sealed, so I'm assuming it's fine. What I need to know however is will this UK-version work on my US-made computer? There is very little documentation online to support this although someone did say it would work but that the UK had many programming differences. …

Hello experts. A little while ago, I accidentally created a 'New Folder' on the desktop only. Now I can't delete it as it says it is a system file that Windows needs. Clearly it doesn't as it doesn't appear via search anywhere else (with hidden files displayed). How do I get rid of it? ###thanks

HP Printer problems
by Guest bigjoe261- 1 reply

The other day I tried to install a new printer, it was an HP Deskjet D4360. After it was installed and it told me to restart my computer I did, but when my computer was booting up again, it just stopped on the windows load screen with that blue bar thing moving by, it just stopped and wouldnt do anything. So than I was able to get on in safe mode and bring my computer back to a restore point and that helpped my computer. But now some webpages wont load on IE and others take a very long time for no reason, like google freezes my computer now and just random sites freeze me up. What could the problem be? I have a dell inspiron 5100 with windows xp with sp2.

I have a box in the middle of my desktop that states, warning, your computer is infected with spyware....... There is no box to close it, and I can not click on it to delete it. I have changed the background, and it stays right in the middle of the screen. I have booted up in safe mode and it does not appear, however I can not find it, to remove it. I have run ad-aware and Symantec, and removed anything that was on the computer, but I can not get ride of this box. any suggestions?

Filename too long when transferring computers
by Guest JMF- 8 replies
Here's something I can't figure out: I bought a new laptop and am transferring files from the old one, through a USB external drive. For some of the files, the new machine says "The filename is too long or filename isn't valid" so the transfer is aborted. They're both XP machines (well, the old one is XP Home and the new one is XP Pro). If the name was fine on the old machine, why isn't it fine on the new one? Especially since in these cases the names aren't even that long. I'm guessing I have to set something on the new machine. Anybody offer any insights? Thanks! John

Slow Defragmentation
by Guest Daz- 5 replies

I am running XP with SP3 on a 160GB hard drive, of which I have used about 10GB. I have a 1.8G processor. I use Diskeeper 9 Professional to defrag. Until recently it would defrag in about 10 to 15 mins at the most. It has now slowed down to a crawl. I have tried using the built in XP defragger which completes very quickly. I have tried Diskeeper Lite and that too takes a long time. Even when I have just completed a defrag and run Diskeeper again it still then takes an age to complete. I have done a lot of Googling but can not come up with a solution. Any ideas would be appreciated. Daz

How to manually uninstall a second windos xp (corrupted) in a disk
by Guest Carlos Maduro- 1 reply

I had to install a new windos xp in a desktop that would not start and would not allow to use the recovery console. Now I have two operating systems: the new xp installation and the old xp installation, and every time I start up I have to chose which one I want to use to startup my comp. Apart from this, the old windows installation holds siginificant space in the disk (together with the program files that had been installed in that windows.) Now I would like to manually delete de old windows xp and the files related to that installation to recover the space in the disk. I am guessing that if I delete the old C:\windows directory, this will do p…
