I recently installed some MAGIX MusicManager 2007 software. I have not been able to get it to work right. It hangs when I try to open files. I have contacted the manufacturer, but they have not been able to give me an answer yet. I am running XP Home with 1GB of RAM. The Event Viewer records the error this way: Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Hang Event Category: (101) Event ID: 1002 Date: 6/15/2008 Time: 10:44:52 PM User: N/A Computer: WILLSDESKTOP683 Description: Hanging application MP3Maker.exe, version 8.1.1.114, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000. by Guest Stan Hilliard- 4 replies

XP Pro SP2 I am having a number of issues with my computer and I will list them all because they might be related. During startup: (1) DOS screen -- less than 20 seconds. Sometimes the first character of each line is missing. Sometimes not. (2) Windows XP progress bar. varies 5-30 seconds (3) Black screen. Sometimes with mouse curser. Varies from 5 seconds to 2 minutes. (4) Logins -- (4a) To desktop -- 6 seconds. (4b) Adding icons on lower menu bar. Varies 1 from minute to 10 minutes. With task-manager I have watched these processes run during the time that the menu bar is filling up. Here are the ones that consume resources: Ad-Watch alg.exe ALi…

I used to be able to burn DVDs from videos I've saved on my computer, but now am not able to view the DVDs once they "burn"... the DVD players in my house can't read the disks, even though it seems like they're burning properly on the computer. Do I have the wrong drive path, or ??? I have NO idea where to start with fixing this! Thanks

Re: Reg Clean or Reformat reg cleaning can be a pain, just format it and be done with it. If you want it done fast and done right try goin' to 'ANLIT' (http://www.anlit.com/) I've used their service before its great and it's fast (about 4 hrs). They do it all over the net with about 10 mins of setup. Reinstalling the OS, backing up your files, MS Office, other apps, the works. -- thething

Questionable biz practices by security software makers
by Guest apistomaster- 4 replies

Within the next week, my subscriptions to AVAST Home Edition and SpyNoMore expire. In the entire past year AVAST has never detected a virus...until it was set to expire. Then my Laptop, a Dell Inspiron E1505, went off like a a 4TH of July fireworks display and triumphantly declared it had found malware/virus? What was the dire warning declaring it had found? It found my SpyNoMore. 1. I thought this version of AVAST was a passive system requiring manual scans only. 2. SpyNoMore is pretty widely used and to have AVAST "coincidentally" find it's first "Virus" in a year and identifying it as SpyNoMore seems a rather unsophisticated attempt to emphasize how dil…

CardSpace vs. Digital Certificate
by Guest Daddy- 0 replies
I've been reading about Windows CardSpace, which I discovered in the Control Panel of my Windows XP Home SP 3. It seems to me that there's nothing unique about CardSpace (aka InfoCard) that doesn't already exist. A 'managed' InfoCard issued by a third party identity provider seems quite similar to a digital certificate. A self-issued 'personal' InfoCard can be compared to software that fills in forms for you. I just don't 'get' the innovation behind CardSpace. Is there something unique about it, or is it just competition for digital certificates and RoboForms? Nothing wrong with competition, of course, I'm just wondering if there's a compelling reason …

Windows XP Backup
by Guest Heidi- 9 replies
I am trying to use Windows XP backup. In the article "Windows XP Backup Made Easy" by Ed Bott, he says that if you choose the My documents and setting option that your e-mail messages and address book will be preserved. I have done a backup and looked at it through restore and I don't see where the e-mails are backed up or how to choose them to be restored. I would like to be able to schedule the backups so they occur automatically, but when I try to choose a Later time for the backup, I get the following error: An error has occurred while attempting to set task account information. The specific error is: 0x80070005: Access is denied. You do not ha…

Clone vs. image (I promise not the same ol ground)
by Guest tcarp- 22 replies
I updating my whole strategy for backing up my home computers. I've read (and re-read) the threads and DO NOT want to go back over cloning and imaging or, for that matter file/folder backups. I'm also NOT interested in comparing software (I can do that). The only questions I have relate to 1) whether to have all the capabilities (clone, image, and file/folder) and 2) given the objective to keep the cost down some, how to limit the software selection. Casper, TI and Ghost seem to be the biggies for cloning and/or imaging. There seem to be a lot of file/folder software options. I downloaded a trial copy of TI just to see what it does and look at the …

Reinstalling XP Pro.............
by Guest specops70- 3 replies

I was wondering something. When I was having problems installing xp about 3 weeks ago I called tech support. The XP disk I have I bought at the University so the tech told me that I can only install 2 or 3 times and thats it. Now he also said that if the installation detects different hardware it won't let me activate. I am probably going to reinstall on the same computer...no changes from 3 weeks ago.......It won't give me any problems will it? since there are no hardware changes?? Its the exact same PC. thanks.

Log on = Insufficient system Resources.
by Guest MITCHell- 1 reply
When I click on my Windows user account on the XP main user screen, it just pops up as an error, saying "Insufficient System Resources to log on user account." I can restart the computer and it is just fine after that for a little while, but when it does log on, it takes a solid 15 minutes for it to get any programs up and running. Im not using anywhere near all of my RAM while im logged on, so I dont really see how that could be the cause of this while nobody is logged on. and ive still got 30gigs of hard drive space, so we're not too full... Please help, its oruf amily computer and we need it.

Having problems!!
by Guest felicia- 2 replies

I am having probelms with my computer. Whenever I try to install something I get error messages that say: Error extracting support files, can not find path specified. I have been all over message boards everywhere and cant seem to find what is wrong. So I called Dell last night and they said I need to install Windows Installer, then if that does not work I need to reinstall the OS. Is there something someone is missing? I am really not wanting to reinstall the OS. I have Windows XP SP3 on a Dell Dimension 4550. Any help would be appreciated.

Cleartype and password character corruption
by Guest Glenn- 2 replies
Has anyone noticed that cleartype corrupts the password character (big dot). It's not completely round -- flat on the top, and pointy on the bottom. This doesn't happen on initial login (after a cold startup), only after a login from a locked/suspended/hibernated machine. It's not a big deal, just annoying. Anyone know of a solution (besides turning off cleartype, which does fix the problem)? I see this problem in XP but not Vista.

Why Do Automatic Updates ALWAYS Eat Up MUCH More HD Space Than Sta
by Guest Scottbot- 5 replies

Everytime it happens. This morning there was a security update ... said size was about half a meg. After the download 4 megs were eaten up. After the install 40 more megs were used! This drives me crazy. Feels like MS is trying to get one over on me every time.

Microphone won't record
by Guest poopiesnotface- 1 reply

Ok, so I did a "microphone" keyword search through here and read the threads where people have posted having problems with their mics... to no avail. I'm running Windows XP on a Dell. The sound works fine, the mic works on another Dell. My SigmaTel driver obviously works, but alas... my microphone somehow is not picking up sound, and YES it is checked for recording device in the recording volume bar thing. But "SigmaTel" is the default recording device in the Audio and Sound Control Panel window. Any help is greatly appreciated!! thanks

problem in WinXP sp3 when using network neighborhood
by Guest tlee- 3 replies

Hi, Recently, I updated 2 pcs into SP3. But, I found when I click the "network neighborhood". It is okay and showing the window. However, after closed the "network neighborhood" window and re-click again. Since, I always need to use that function in sharing files with other PCs. In other SP2 PCs, there is no such problem. Does the problem cause by SP3? Any solution is to solve it? Or, downgrade to SP2? Thanks Tlee

Applications retaining memory after shutdown
by Guest Ed- 1 reply
Several applications including all of the Office 2003 suite do not leave memory when shutdown. Some applications will not restart until they are killed in the task manager. Firefox used to do it, but the latest version has stopped the problem. However Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 does, as does Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. IE has never done this in any of its iterations. This also happened in XP SP2 so upgrading to SP3 did not help. If I start and shutdown one of the offending apps a number of times all of the copies remain in memory and really slow things down. This happened after a series of upgrades were carried out automatically, but i cannot determine wh…

Firefox Question ?
by Guest James- 8 replies

I use version 2.0.0.14 of Mozilla Firefox. I tried to post this in an appropriate Mozilla group, but my server does not carry them. My OS is Windows XP, Professional. If I go to a website where the initial, downloaded page is a lengthy multi-page article, Firefox freezes. It does fine day after day, as long as I only click on text articles that are only 2 or 3 pages in length. Anyone have any idea why I have this problem ? Thanks for any advice on this. James

Windows hanging
by Guest Nick B- 0 replies
Sometime after upgrading Windows XP Home Edition SP2 to SP3 we started to experience an odd hanging. If the computer is not used for several hours (hibernate, standby, and turn off hard disks are all off), we can click on an icon on the desktop to highlight it. We can then click on a different icon and that will become highlighted without a problem, but as soon as we try to open something (program, folder, etc.) from either the desktop or the Taskbar, Windows freezes. The mouse will still move around, but you cannot click on anything. You can hover over the expand arrow on the system tray and it does say "Show hidden icons", but if you click on the arr…
