by Guest Hazelmere- 1 reply

I am half way through installing trial software (Nero 8) with Nero 6 curremtly installed. It now tells me that it has to de-install Nero 6 before it can install the trial version of the software. I now want to back out of the installation and retain my Nero 6. However I can't reverse it - says software is ready to install (when I go to shutdown screen it says updates ready to install). Does anyone know how I can reverse the installation? cheers Hazel

Re: Desktop icons are wider than usual
by Guest Jon- 1 reply

Re: Desktop icons are wider than usual I'm having the same problem. Resetting resolution (recommended resolution or not) has no impact on aspect ratio. Everything on my screen is stretched (horizontally) about 15-20%. I've never had this problem with any monitor, but with Vista it has started. As it is I cannot use my new Dell monitor for graphics. I got on a chatline with Dell to no avial. the tech did not know what "aspect ratio" was, much less how to solve problems. I'll have to prowl the Dell driver CD for some answers, I suppose, or wait on a Vista-based answer. "Ken Blake, MVP" wrote: > Moses wrote: > > > I've tried running it a…

Recurring print file
by Guest jeh- 3 replies

A while ago I had a PDF file (possibly faulty) refuse to print on my Konica Minolta 2400W. Trying to delete it from the print queue in the usual way resulted in the delete job hanging until I turned the printer off. When I turned the printer back on the job had vanished and I was able to continue printing other files. However, every time I reboot the PC the same "faulty" file appears in the printer queue and I can't print anything else until I've turned the printer off and on again. This is maddening. The symptoms suggest that the job hasn't been deleted from the print spooler. Is this right and does anyone have any suggestions how to get around this proble…

wbemtest question

Hi, I've perfomed the following on two machines: * Start > Run > wbemtest * Connect > root\CIMV2 * Query: "select * from win32_temperatureprobe" On the one machine, I get two entries which I can check the values of (though not the actual temperature I want!). On the other machine, I don't get an error, but no entries are returned. Any idea what's going on? Perhaps a required service is not running on the second machine or something like that? Thanks in advance, Alain

RE: Vista, XP Pro or XP x64 Pro... that is the question! I have vista on my laptop and was very unhappy with it until I downloaded SP1, which has fixed all the problems I was seeing. I am using Vista business and it is mostly fast enough. The problem is any X64 opsys is that there are going to be some drivers, or applications that will simply not work on it, and we found that on a x64 laptop that just would not work with some of our equipment (USB2 based logging thermometers) because the drivers would not operate on the system. That may be an issue for you using high graphical programs, trying to use devices that may only have x32 drivers. We had pr…

Hello! I reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP3. Local accounts work fine. But domain accounts do not have access to many files in the c:\Windows folder and cannot load a profile. I gave the domain accounts the administrative rights on my computer. The security tab in the files properties show the administrative group has full access to the files. But when I double-click on the files a message appears that the account does not have the access. How to make domain accounts have a real access to the Windows? Best regards, Dima

XP Death Watch http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/05/27/XP-deathwatch-T-minus-five-weeks_1.html Even though it has had its own problems of late, Windows XP remains the most-used version of Windows. The newest data from Web metrics vendor Net Applications, for example, pegs XP as driving 73 percent of the personal computers that went online last month, five times the nearest competitor, Microsoft's own Windows Vista. Which is why an impending deadline five weeks from today is important. According to Microsoft, June 30 is the last day it will permit retailers and OEMs to sell the nearly seven-year-old operating system. [ Make your voice heard.…

II have Word 2002 and WinXP Pro SP2. Even though I have a few bitmap fonts installed (by Microsoft?) and they can be accessed via Notepad and Wordpad, they are not available in Word. Can bitmap fonts be used in later versions of Word or is there a Word 2002 upgrade that enables the use of bitmap fonts? -- ray124c41

Wi-Fi Card and best/proper OS
by Guest Prieto Chulo- 6 replies

I have an HP Proliant ML-110 G4 server with XP Pro SP2. I hope someone can help me. 1. I have and Edimax EW-7728IN Wi-Fi card. It used to work correctly but I used a maintenance software that deleted like 300 "unnecessary" software or registry fixing stuff etc. Now my PC detects the wireless connections available but cannot connect to them. Some them says they cannot detect the IP address or the DNS values or "acquiring network address". It detects the signal strength (54-100 Mbps) but never connects. 2. Recently a bought the above machine. I installed Win XP SP2 and have worked fairly well with the exception of video. I'm having problems with …

To make it short and sweet. My laptop functions perfectly with wireless networks, like in my home. But when I take it to my office or to a hotel with Ethernet only and plug the cable in, the laptop sees the connection (the balloon on the lower right says so) but I cannot open any web pages or download any mail. In other words, it sees the Ethernet connection but doesn't know how to use it. Do I have to disable my wireless settings before the computer can use the Ethernet? Can I set it to use both, with Ethernet having priority? Dave Schwartz

Ethernet overriding Wireless Internet Connection

Hi. Thank you in advance for reading this and hopefully trying to help me. I have a Dell laptop running XP which is used only sporadically, mainly when I travel. My wireless connections always work fine, no matter where I am, but when I was at a friends's house with no wireless network but with an Ethernet network, when I plugged the Ethernet cord into the laptop, the computer recognized it but didn't seem to know what to do with it. I could not connect to any internet sites. Do I have to somehow tell the computer what to do with an Ethernet connection? Is it set to only look for and use a wireless connection? Can I set it to also use an Ethernet conn…

Shutdown disc activity
by Guest Carl- 0 replies
XP Home Lately, since I upgraded my browser, I get a 15 or 20 sec delay with a lot of disc activity after I click "Turn off Computer" on the Start menu. This is before the Turn off Computer dialog box comes up. The "Shutting down" delay with blue screen that comes after clicking "Turn off" in the dialog box is about the same as before. So what activity is taking place between clicking "Turn off" in the Start menu and getting the "Turn off" dialog box? My browser is already closed before I begin shutdown, and it is not set to empty its cache when closed.

Windows XP Home, 6 different user accounts, password is the same for all 6 accounts, randomly, during user account log on/off, the password will not be accepted, reboot the system and the password works again. Its random, password will work for 2 hours then stop working, reboot password will work again. Funny thing is, the password hint is still correct but the password no longer works. Is my password file being corrupted? Any help is appreciated. Jon

Although I continuely use the same USB Key, Windows XP doesn't remember the device, and triggers and driver search and load dialogue. This also occurs with a hot pluggable SATA harddrive I have. I want Windows XP to remember the device or just ignore it. How can I setup Windows XP to do ignore or remember? Why doesn't it remember my USB Key? For the SATA hard drive, it doesn't find the driver. The dialogue only give me a "Finish" button with no check box to ignore device in the future.

Problem with display adapter and monitor
by Guest Stan Hilliard- 0 replies

XP Pro SP2 My LCD monitor has both analog and digital modes. At startup, the monitor sometimes sets to one mode, sometimes the other. Digital looks best except it causes some media players like Miro and VLC media players have a blacked out video screen. I am suspicious about the drivers. I have updated the drivers for my GeForce FX 5500 Graphics card and the my ViewSonic VA912b monitor. But I installed them without uninstalling the old. Graphics card driver: In device manager the driver for the display adapter is NVIDIA, v8.4.2.1, 3/9/2005 Driver install file: 84.21_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe Monitor Drivers: Device manager shows two identica…
